Opinions on HP ProLiant ML115 G5

After a day of toiling it's sorted!

Not sure 100% what the issue was but I updated the drive firmware, updated the nvidia 2003 server driver and played with the partition.....finally it added the damn thing!

Thanks for reasuring me that the drive worked at least :)

Glad you got it working :)

Discovered a interesting quirk today. Fitted 5 2TB drives and 1 500GB Boot Drive to one of the servers. Wouldn't power on at all. Disconnected one of the drives and it powered on fine.

Tried the disconnected drive in one of the other boxes and it works fine.
Changed that drive for another and it booted up fine.
Plugged them all back in and it wont power on.

Think that measly 325watt PSU is struggling a bit. Didn't think it was under huge stress tbh, Quad Core, 8GB RAM, Intel Pro 1000 NIC and 6 HDD's in that particular unit.

You get what you pay for I guess, at £99 a pop for the first 2 and £119 for the subsequent 2, you cant expect much.

I'm running out of drive bays in my box and am wondering where to go next.

Do I:

a) Rehouse the internals into a new tower case (Is this even possible)
b) Add some form of DAS to the system.

Any ideas peeps?

1. Buy Bigger Drives
2. Buy a CDDrive to HardDrive adapater
3. Bodge another Drive with some sticky back pads
4. Buy another ML115 and use it as a iSCSI SAN :D
5. Get a eSATA card to connect external drives

Already doing this but I'd like to re-use the 500GB and 1TB drives I'm replacing

Looking at sticking a HD caddy into the spare 5.25" and may actually remove the CD and install a 3 x 3.5" icy dock that fits into 2 x 5.25 (Just need to check out PSU connectors!)

3. Bodge another Drive with some sticky back pads
Least favourite option!

Got any details / links on doing this?

Trying to minimise "Mess" and the footprint it all takes up!

The motherboard appears to be a mATX so re-housing in a larger case might be a option.

Not sure if all the holes will line up on another case though as the actual layout of the board is nothing like a mATX.

I just installed the retail Windows 7. That is up and running fine, now the box can get on with doing it's job.

How have you been finding Windows 7 any probs ?
I need a machine to stick Windows 7 64 on and was going to put it on this.

Have these servers been superseeded now? I cant find any instock and those that still list them are well over £300 now.

Do we know what it has been superseeded by if it has?

What would be recomended to get if an ml115 cannot be purchased?

Yes they have, I've just been looking it's cheaper to buy the G6 chassis then get one of these.

ML110 G6 Quad-Core Xeon, 1GM RAM, 250GB HDD can be had for £358inc
