Oscar Pistorius thread

Flicked over to the news, caught the last few mins of Sky's trial coverage.

Noted with some horror that the bullets in his gun were "designed to cause maximum damage and internal injury, internal bleeding and maximum chance of fatality".

Does anyone think those kinds of munitions should be illegal? Frankly I hope he gets jail time just for being so inhumane that he'd consider that kind of munition to be a good idea. The bullet is designed to shred the victims body instead of passing through. Bear in mind that for most people, a bullet "passing through" will put you down, but at least give some chance of survival, depending on where you were shot.

It's downright sick in the head to have those kinds of bullets available to the public/anyone.

Foxeye, you need to get out more, mate! The fact that the bullet is "designed to cause maximum damage and internal injury, internal bleeding and maximum chance of fatality" is in reality to limit the amount of casualties to the criminal in question. The maximum damaged caused to them would ultimately limit the amount of damage they could cause.

As has been mentioned above, the use of hollow points is to a) reduce the chance of overpenetration thereby potentially harming any innocents and b) provide for maximum stopping power. It does this by expanding immediately upon hitting wet tissue. This increases the frontal area of the bullet which improves the chance of hitting something vital and causes more soft tissue damage which causes shock effect (through the dumping of all the kinetic energy) and rapid blood loss and drops blood pressure which hopefully takes the criminal down immediately.

Thus, despite all the media hype which gets people like you frothing at the mouth, it is a much better choice for self defense. Despite your claim "that for most people, a bullet "passing through" will put you down", this is a blatant misconception. There are many instances of a FMJ (Full Metal Jacket) passing clean through (especially in the 9mm calibre that OP was using) and the criminals continuing with their attack wounding or killing the victim. Just this morning I watched about how Princess Anne's police bodyguard was shot three times (at least once in the chest) and survived.

What concerns me more is that a "gun nut" was using ammunition that was discontinued about 15 years ago. Surely, he should have been using ammunition that was less likely to misfire. I stopped carrying Black Talons for self defence about 12 years ago although I still have some expended bullets somewhere and they were sharp as hell.

NB

Interesting choice of words there, I wonder where you got those from

Just because the guy has had a couple of slip ups with fire arms and ordered a few guns, in a country where you are allowed up to 4 guns (hunters can have more) does not make him a "gun nut".

Surely in South Africa, like America and any other country that permits people to own fire arms there will be hundreds and thousands of incidents like the two I have pointed out. Yes I understand not all of those people will be up on murder charges but the term "gun nut" is just the prosecutions way of tainting Oscars reputation in the eyes of the court.

You need to understand he is a national hero over there and it will be hard to convince the jury that one of their most loved sportsman is capable of the charges he faces.

He is so obviously guilty Im suprised the trial is lasting so long. If he gets off with it then it will be obviously his family money bribeing the judge. No one would shoot 3 times through a closed door without fully knowing what was behind it. He would definatly befound guilty if he was being judged by a jury but South africa dont do it for some reason and only use a judge, probably so the rich people find it easier to get away with illegal activity. GUILTY GUILTY GUILTY

Unless he changes his plea, the trial will last as long as it takes to hear witness testimonies, expert opinions and view all the physical evidence. He is receiving his fair trial, because he is innocent, until proven guilty.

While more money can buy you a better lawyer in such a high profile case I doubt it can buy you a judge so i think the fact he has a few bob is neither here nor there.

Im not defending him, Ive said before think he is guilty of murder. I think he just flipped and went bonkers. I dont think he planned it in advance or else he would have come up with a better story.

I do onder if theyd had an argument and shed locked her self in the bath room an he fired into scare her not thinking hed hit her and now genuinly regrets that but doesnt want to go to jaill

If your way of scaring an already scared woman even more is to fire a gun in her vicinity, then you deserve to be locked up.

The line between scaring someone and flipping completely and shooting them is way too thin. Anyone who goes that far needs to be behind bars.

and/or professional psychological help, just locking them up wont help.

Scotland apparently can use a judge if the possible sentence is less than one year, but the they have an odd majority in juries of 8 out of 15. (radio 4)

I wouldn't like to be tried in SA, the police sound like a right bunch of idiots.

Just had a quick look, they were expanding "Black Talon" rounds. Grisly sounding, but not actually any more effective than other expanding munitions.

Apparently expanding rounds have been banned in warfare since 1899, because of the horrific entry and exit wounds they cause.

And yet they are legal for civilian use and standard issue for US law enforcement.

they were banned in warfare for silly reasons and no days would be useless anyway as modern armies have body amour.

you're really hamming it up with the "omg horrific injuries" bit they just dispense more of their energy an typically kill you quicker and more humanely.

also you seem to be missing the one massive factor in why hollow points/deforming bullets are PERFECT and IDEAL for civilian and police use.

It's actually point you thought was bad lol....They DON'T pass through, through people or brick walls.

can you possibly think why a weapon designed to be used in self defense inside a build up civilian or residential area might be made ****ing stupidly dangerous with penetrating rounds?

just think on it a while i'm sure it will come to you once you're vagina has stopped being hysterical.

You are so smug, Tefal, it defies belief. I'd rather not argue with you, since you're unlikely to have any respect for anyone's opinion other than your own, in any case.

No he's never met a nice South African
And that's not bloody surprising man
'Cause we're a bunch of talentless murderers
Who smell like baboons
