PC and Console fan boys, Whats the deal ?

I dislike consoles for what they've done to gaming. Well lets re phrase it. I dislike xbox for what they have done to gaming. Charging people for multilplayer, dlc, buying guns ammo etc. The corruption of gaming as i knew it started there. So yeah as a pc gamer i.ve seen what consoles have done to my gaming sector. I still buy consoles though for the gt5 off this world etc.

My dad's bigger than your dad.
Well my dad's faster than your dad.

Console vs PC is exactly the same, it's been debated by kids for as long as anyone can remember and there will never be a 'winner', only an embarrassing debate about something which only has any perceived relevance in the heads of those who're foolish enough to spend time debating it.

It's a truth fact the with coding to the metal you get a lot more out of the hardware than having to code for thousands of different combinations, hence why the PS4 is equivalent to a $2000 PC.

I dunno, if your dad is Usain Bolt, then I think there's a pretty clear winner in that example ;)

There is no clear "console is better than PC" or vice versa, however you can't argue that "console is better than pc at X, Y, Z" and vice versa.

  • PC is better for all round use - fact
  • Console is better for putting the disc in, sitting on the sofa with the controller, and playing a game within 5 mins without having to worry about driver updates, hardware compatibility, performance issues, etc. - fact
  • PC is better in terms of raw power and performance where price is not an issue - fact
  • Bang per buck, console is better in terms of upfront cost for the hardware - fact

Etc.

Which system is better for an individual entirely depends on a multitude of factors, of which the main ones are:

  • Intended use
  • Budget
  • Preference of exclusives

So what may be better for one person may be a stupid choice for someone else.

While true, there's not that big a difference to be honest, tweaked and properly configured, a $1,289.58 - $1,450.81 PC will easily outperform a PS4 (any particular reason we're using $ now rather than £?)

I agree that traditionally hardware specific coding / development has increased optimisation and overall quality due to the hardware specific focus. But because the hardware in the PS4 is basically PC technology and the fact that more games are being developed supporting initiatives like Mantle, I think that tradtitional benefit is fast receding.

As such, I'm not convinced a PS4 is the equivalent of a $2000 (£1200) PC. Sorry.

Also consoles have 10x the number of draw calls compared to the highest end gaming PC's.

Did I mention coding to the metal.

Yes you did, which is vastly more expensive and time consuming. Only big brands are going to do that, most will still use the DirectX API that the next gen consoles all support (along with Mantle).

I would take a look into AMD's intention of producing a 100,000+ draw call capable version of Mantle for PC. Mantle may well be the logical replacement for DirectX, particularly as AMD are confident it can also be used on Nvidia based cards. If this version of Mantle is released and becomes a dominant API, it will work wonders for PC based performance. I do not think PS4 has the hardware grunt to support 100,000+ draw calls.

Not so expensive when developing for a single platform or two

All ifs and maybes and potential unreleased products.

BTW I was just taking the mic

I find it very hard to talk about anything to do with PC or console gaming in real life, because it just sounds so incredibly sad.
Yes I spend lots of time playing computer games, I might even engage in some light hearted debate on a forum, or discuss a game, or sometimes even have a bit of a rant.

Just not in public.

How old are you, if you don't mind me asking? A lot of my friends, who are around my age(21), have gaming PCs and the even ones who don't still understand why I game on PC, they don't look down on it or anything.
