PC Gaming and the problem with parity.

It doesn't help that PC and consoles are using very standardised and similar hardware, x86 CPU with a GCN based video card. Back in the day consoles would have chips developed by the likes of IBM, Motorola, Ricoh, Yamaha, MIPS and Hitachi and on the PC you have Intel, AMD and little ol' Cyrix with graphics being supplied by various vendors. The market has now consolidated around a handful of semi conductor companies who specifically design hardware for consumer electronics so it's no wonder that the output (games) all looks the same.

PC + Ultrawide monitor can't be beaten. I have a 4K TV and it just doesn't compare or feel anywhere near as immersive as a massive 21:9 screen.

Sure it can. PC + a good 4K monitor is much better. No immersion breaking bars, no need to move neck, plus better and sharper graphics :D;)

Cannot really compare a 4K TV to a monitor anyway when it comes to using it on the PC imo.

But truth be told is a case of each to their own, it is a preference thing rather than one being better than the other for everyone.

We'll agree to disagree :p

Consoles, and I maybe wrong, do not have the option to use ultrawide resolutions as they went along the 4K route. Also, don't forget you can use DSR to get ridiculous resolutions on your 21:9 7680×3200 so picture clarity again is stupendously good!

Regarding 'no need to move neck' and assuming your head isn't the size of a tennis ball sitting 2 inches from screen isn't an issue :D . Check out the ultrawide screenshot thread > Here < and you'll notice that games like Ass Creed Origins, Battlefront 2, Racing games, MMo's look amazing due to seeing a larger screen width (no black bars) and some will argue you gain a big advantage in multiplayer fps because you have a larger 'vista'.

21:9 is far superior and it's support in PC games is extremely high now, I couldn't go back to 4K or 16:9 ugh!

1. PC hardware prices are on the rise, this is for various reasons but mainly because custom built PCs are becoming more niche every year (just look at the statistics, all the triple A game money is at the consoles, PC profits are all from free to play games, competitive games like overwatch, CS:GO, LOL, minecraft
2. The fact that graphics aren't much better than consoles any more shows developers don't see the PC being worth while the extra effort for optimisation and vastly better graphics, heck the fact that warner brothers passed the batman AK PC version to a **** console focused developer says it all.....

Main reason I'll stick to PC is for 21.9, 60+ FPS. Will get a PS 4 at some stage though for the exclusives.

Lastly, I got 21.9 and OLED 4k HDR TV, both are very immersive but with OLED, it's like looking through a window ;) No doubt 21.9 is far more immersive though. Combine a 21.9 res. on a 55" OLED TV and have the best of both worlds  :D

But yeah, when it comes to this topic, it is always the same old arguments :D

We will definitely have to agree to disagree on that. If it was as immersive and superior as people say it would have taken of a lot more than it has and I would even have one. Obviously not everyone agree's on this.

That is because it is subjective :D

I go back time and time again to 16:9 1440p 144Hz - I do have a 21:9 display alongside my main desktop panel and its superb for some stuff but no way I'd ever adopt it as my primary display even for gaming though there are some games that work really well on there.

I actually prefer 16:10 but that seems to have gone by the by for the most part.

Everyone copies each other for the next Battle Royale, Early Access and lootbox lottery.

Oh come on guys.

We have an enormous wealth of great games to enjoy. And we’ve even managed to reverse a recent loot box inclusion.

There are so, so many titles that have brought me a lot of fun and a real special experience. From tiny indies to AAA.

It seems very popular to bash the big studios, and there’s definitely been some real wet fart releases, but I think we’ve become rather spoilt and cynical.

I'll be selling my PC when I move to my new home next year and buying an Xbox One X and a PS4 Pro (I want all those exclusives!)

My PC is still more than capable at playing 1080p @ 60fps but the urge to upgrade to 4K kicks in every now and again so start speccing a PC and then gasp at the cost.

PC hardware costs are getting higher and the second hand console market is really good at the moment so the urge to switch to console is already setting in.

One of the only reasons I'm holding off is that I play Battlefield with a lot of guys from here and I enjoy it greatly.

I assume most people will now go "zOMG, PC gaming taking of!!!!!!"

But then read the article:

Gartner reports that the growth was driven by increased business sales and that consumer shipments declined. IDC similarly pointed to the "business-driven refresh cycle" as a reason for the increase. This mirrors Microsoft's financial reporting; the software giant distinguishes between business and consumer sales of Windows and Office, and the general pattern over the last few quarters is that business sales have been robust even as consumer demand continues to soften. Enterprises are migrating to Windows 10, and they're buying new hardware to do so.

Lenovo and HP continue to vie for the top spot as biggest PC seller. IDC had HP top of the pile at 23.9 percent of the market to Lenovo's 22.1 percent. Gartner had them both at 21.9 percent of the market, with Lenovo narrowly beating HP to the top spot with 12,000 more sales. Both firms put Dell in a solid third place, followed by Apple and then Acer. Of the top five companies, Apple's growth was reported to be the weakest year-on-year at three percent (Gartner) or 0.1 percent (IDC). In aggregate, these five vendors alone accounted for the vast majority of sales: 88.7 percent according to Gartner, 77.7 percent per IDC.

And this:

Looking forward, Gartner expects the business segment will weaken in two years as the migration to Windows 10 passes its peak.

Yup, BF and a few other games with the guys from here is the main reason I still have a gaming PC.

60+ FPS and 21.9 is great though and if the PC version is good i.e. optimised well with little to no bugs on release day, I'll buy the game for PC instead.

Couldn't care less about 4k though (would much rather have 60FPS @ 1080P over 4k @ 30 fps). I just want some quality good exclusives and not have to faff about with settings etc. anymore and also, I want a flawless HDR experience too (aside from OLED panel tech., it is the next best thing for improving IQ imo), which sadly windows/PC gaming does not quite provide yet :o

I'm just waiting for a good bundle deal on a PS 4 pro, gutted that I missed out on a PS 4 pro + 4 uncharted games last year for £280, although at this stage now, the next PS can't be far of.....

You'll be back to PC before the end of the year once you realise how bad consoles and their online communities are.

If you're already on PC and really need to play those first party console exclusives, it's best to wait until the generation is almost over and pick up the console for under £100 and the games for a £10 or less.

I have a moderately high-end PC and I'm originally a PC gamer but I don't upgrade anymore because PC doesn't have anything worthwhile. It's just a multiplat machine, unless you love online shooters. I only use it for Tekken and some multiplats. All of my best gaming experiences and favourite series have been on consoles so far. I know that 30fps sucks etc. but after a couple of mins I get used to it if I jump from something at 60fps.

No point investing serious money to play multiplatform games at slightly higher details when I have lots of better titles to play on the PS Pro, especially that a new GPU costs significantly more than the entire console. I'll consider upgrading when at least a couple of great multiplats come out that won't run decently on a 1070.

These are only games, after all.

There is just so much I can't do on a console.

21:9 at high FPS, just high FPS in general, MMO's. I'd not be able to replay any of my favourite games that are not on console.

I've not had any issues with performance or optimization on new PC games for as long as I can remember. They nearly all support 21:9, all look and run better and after tweaking a few settings just work.

Not an option.

Having gamed at 4:3, 16:10, 16:9 and 21:9 I don't believe I could go back to anything below 21:9 now.

I did try 4k for some time, but for me the immersion of 21:9 is something else.

Personally speaking, if I had the real estate on my desk I would go for 32:9 with the Samsung.

Also MOST games support the aspect ratio out of the box now, and those that don't usually have a fix available via flawless widescreen/cheat engine/hex edit etc.

Even some of the much older titles can be modified to take into account the extra horizontal space.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

However to get back on track, high end PC gaming is expensive, and in terms of bang for buck a PS4 or a Switch etc offers a lot more value for money. Sure you dont have to have a 21:9 or a 4k monitor. Of course you dont need to have a 1080ti in your rig, but then again to really differentiate yourself from console gaming in respect of visuals you have to dollar up. High end PC gamers dont really look at value as a deciding factor for their hardware choices.

If I had to choose between an AVERAGE pc or a console, it would be the latter.
