It's a shame your mac hasn't corrected all the mistakes in your spelling and punctuation.

Well the main point is perfectly valid. There's very little (if anything) a Mac can do that a PC can't, whereas the converse is not true. :)

because a 1.83GHz C2D with 1GB Ram and 120GB HDD wouldn't cost £930 as a macbook and just under £700 as a Dell Inspirion?

Here we have it! That is exactly right. Most people who use Macs have previously (or still are) using PCs so we are more qualified in saying which is better. The 'PC boys' who have no clue about macs should really use one for a few months, then comment on it.

/Awaits, 'but I used my m8s and it wos crap!' etc.
Quite right. Used Windows for years and ran a business on them. Switched to Mac, guess what, my business is more productive and I am NEVER switching back. The Mac bashers can say what they want, they are wrong.

I've tried to switch, 3 times but every time I ended up selling the Mac and coming back to the PC - which I felt far more productive. no one is wrong or right, it is all subjective and depends on what you do for your business.

Because 700 is half of 930 :/

PLus, the Macbook can run Mac OSX, Windows and Linux should you wish, the Dell can't :p

That is great, they obviously work for you. :)

I'm not sure if it counts as Mac bashing when I say I don't like the adverts as misleading and unduly smug but if it is then so be it. As for disliking Macs and Apple, I do, it is a general thing and I've already stated it is an (arguably I suppose) irrational prejudice however I recognise that not all Mac users are smug or pretentious since I know a few, the adverts don't tend to do anything than make me think they are aimed at people who are smug and sneering though. The last time I used a Mac properly was in High School (~7-8 years ago) and I didn't like the way everything seemed to be hidden away from me, partly this would be down to school policy no doubt but I think it is also part of a deeper design to do so. I like an OS that allows me to do anything more or less no matter if it will screw everything up, I liked Windows 98 as it was the last Microsoft OS that was relatively stable and didn't hide much from the user - you knew what you were doing or you left well alone. I am aware now that you can alter many things 'in the background' of Macs but it still seems like more hassle, this is one of the things I don't like about XP, it has hidden things away as well. I'm clearly one of those wierdos who doesn't just want their OS to become simpler and simpler. :D

The problem is we started off discussing the adverts yet, as always, this thread has descended into the old PC v Mac argument. I am to blame as much as everyone else. :o :)

I found the UK versions annoying but the US adverts really made me laugh. However, I found the spoofs and the Novell advert even funnier. As for people that are having a pop at Apple for what they perceive as exaggerated claims in their adverts really don't have a grasp on the whole concept of advertising at all. For instance, I recall the launch adverts of Vista with one word 'WOW!' in big letters on a billboard. We all know that if they were truthful then the advert would have said "MEH!" :D

Times are good for us computer enthusiasts, we have Windows, OS X and various Linux strains to choose from as well as other OSs, we also have the choice of a fantastic range of hardware platform on which to run it. The price we pay for such choice in a very competitive market is the occasional porky pie or cheap dig in the adverts. It's called capitalism and if you don't like it move to Cuba or North Korea.

You'd have the same result if you un-installed the games from your PC :p

And don't forget my fave by the purple shirt brigade -
This Core 2 Duo system can download MP3's while playing them - WOW.

Its a sad fact that while some purple shirted brigade people dont know jack about PCs, some really do know quite a lot (build there own pcs a lot, theres several of em at the one I work at), but are often forced to sell down, resulting in examples like the above. Lots of the consumers know very little about PCs, and without very obvious examples of what an item can do well, a lot of consumers know very very little and wont understand what an item can do. Due to the sheer number of customers like this, it can be a sad fact that people fall into the habit of doing this, because its not too often you meet someone in there asking for help who actually knows a fair amount more. You just really gotta try and find the right advisors in those places.

Ofc saying that, theres idiots and fools in all retail chains, just due to the subject matter sold at said shop, you tend to find more, or CSA's selling down more often so a wider range of consumers will get the jist of what they're trying to sell.

Oh get over yourselfs. No one is stopping Microsoft to make their own line of adverts. Only reason they don't is because it would bore the crap out of most users.

I would rather have a 20th century Mac anyday, maybe be alittle restricted by what I can install and use and actually get out more!

Its purely games that is what most Pc users base their insults on anyway and a Mac advert as never promoted gaming but has creativity.

Charlie Brooker has a great article here. I especially like "Macs are glorified Fisher-Price activity centres for adults; computers for scaredy cats too nervous to learn how proper computers work; computers for people who earnestly believe in feng shui."
Perhaps I should add that I am a mac user and have been for the last two years. For an average home user, which I would consider myself, I have never enjoyed using a computer as much as I have since switching to OS X.

Actually the reason that Microsoft probably don't put out their own line of anti mac adverts is that they really don't see macs as a threat. When you comapre the two mac really are a bit player. 280m Windows PCs vs 5m Macs last year. Do you really think MS care?
