Phoenix Point - new strategy game from X-COM creator Julian Gollop

An interesting VLOG from the Snapshot guys on the 'early' character modelling for the game; Julian Gollop basically walks around the office and asks the character artists stuff :)

A proper legend is Julian, I had a misspent youth on Rebelstar II, not to mention the rest of his games from that time. I remember some epic games on Lords of Chaos, where after a massive tense long battle with my final spell, I sent my friend plunging to his doom. He ran out the house, and all the way home in disgust/rage :D

Lol. I think that sums up just about everyone back then, well those with a Speccy anyway :) There is vid of me on my YouTube making a mess of replaying Reblestar again, its gameplay fundamentals still stand up. I'm really looking forward to PP; bit of Civilization meets bit of Firaxis XCOM meets original XCOM :) … quite a lot to balance there but seems like they're managing to!

Impressive work with the streaming speccy games

Cheers, it was great fun doing them but I've currently got medical stuff going on & are waiting for an op so I've put streaming on hold though will likely be restarting early October-ish and I might just kick off 'series 2' with Lords of Chaos… it is after all my favourite Gollop game and someone should really remake it! (oh, to win the lottery that I don't play :) )

Just a heads up that today's the last day to take advantage of the 20% off Phoenix Point pre-orders EGX offer. The promo code EGX20 expires at midnight. For anyone interested their store is here: https://phoenixpoint.xsolla.com/

Good video that, I loved it when he said the speccy was the best machine ever :D

It almost is; I'll always be an Amigan :). The Speccy probably could have been though if Amstrad hadn't blown it but we need a time machine to fix that (& summarily execute the Commodore US board for crimes against home computing whilst at it :) ).

What does this have over the new XCOM?

A lot :)

Okay, it's late so this is going to miss a lot of stuff out but off the top of my head;
Realistic Ballistics for combat rather than RNG
Return Fire ability as well as Overwatch/Opportunity Fire
A new hybrid movement system
Vehicles in Tactical Battles such as APCs
Huge 'boss' aliens

Aliens learn from their defeats and evolve adaptations to counter the player's strategies. The type of alien is also a mutation based upon the creatures the enemy Pandoravirus finds; hence at the coast you'll be facing sea creature based aliens whilst inland you'll face other types.

The Geoscape is more a proper strategic layer upon which there is not only the mysterious alien mist & alien forces, but 3 Major Human Factions plus minor factions (independent Havens). These factions are following different ideologies to solve the alien problem so allying with a certain faction may get you access to specific technologies but also cause diplomatic fallout and conflict. This is part of the more advanced strategic layer which involves commodities such as food and limitations such as fuel. You start the game with a single base called 'Phoenix Point' and a single helicopter with locations of everything else unknown to you because half the world is now underwater and the entire global economy & governance has collapsed. Thus an element of 4X is here too.

… so yeah, the above, plus everything I've forgotten :) , plus everything that's great about XCOM! :)

Sounds cool.

XCOM is great but a bit its too arcade like for me. Especially the geoscape. Xenonauts is good as well but it feels too stale in comparison. Really I just want a good remake of the first one, but the above looks like something I'd enjoy. :)

The more I see of this game which is little by little my interest gets greater and greater.

Yep. It's the strategic layer that has sold it to me the most as someone who plays and enjoys both civ and XCOM. It not only makes sense from a thematic perspective that if the world goes down the pan you'd have factions squabbling with each other for what was left but it also sounds like one heck of game to be trying get those numpties to work together or if that fails just kill the lot of them & nick all their stuff :) Really looking forward to seeing how it plays in early access.
