Pimax 8k is live

Does that qualify as a mad rush? ... it's got to be good for all pledges hasn't it? More for the same?

Yes, i hope they hit 3m as it means free eye tracking module for me, I'm hopefull as they have done well over 100k per day the last few days which means they now only need about 80k per day - they've done another 30k in the few hours since my last post and they have more demos this weekend.

I've just worked out I've got nearly a grand's worth of kit I can sell that either isn't being used or I won't need when I get what I'm planning to...SWMBO will not be pleased lol...

That's not including the Rift as I'm thinking about keeping it for roomscale gaming, the touch controllers are pretty good.

Checkout this vid that someone else kindly found and provided:

For context:
- This vid was taken by a phone camera strapped to the Pimax
- Sounds like the kit used was a laptop with an Nvidia 1050 and K7 running at 2.7ghz. For reference, I normally run DCS myself using a 1080 using ASW at 45hz on a CV1. DCS is a bit of a resource hog as it's still nothing like well optimised.
- He did mention that all the settings were at low. Upping the textures does improve legibility of controls in the cockpit, and from my experience, tends to not be too big a hit on frame rate

In short, I'm VERY impressed. Would love to see some more examples.

That's 4k version though?

Thinking about it they should be broadly similar, the 4k is a single 4k panel at around 100° FOV, the 8k is 2 4k panels, one for each eye but closer to 200°, but in terms of ppd they should be pretty similar

They posted another update this morning - the kickstarter version is now going to be the same as the final retail version, previously they said there could be further changes so effectively the cheaper kickstarter price was a discount for a less polished product - kickstarter pledgers are now getting the final polished product.

About to hit 2.5m with 7 days to go.

This has got me intrigued now. The much improved SDE effect especially.

I've a few queries though:
  1. I'll keep my Vive base stations and I'm not bothered about hand controllers. On that basis, what would be the best backers option to go for? (Edit - I assume the $499 'first 8k ever'?)
  2. Would my set-up (in sig below) be OK - I'd mainly be playing Elite Dangerous?
  3. If I decided to sell my Vive, what would I need to buy to keep the Pimax going - just a single base station?
  4. Where would the headset be sent from i.e. any problems re. import?
  5. What's the timescale for the release of CV2 versions of the Rift/Vive?

2. Your rig is probably fine
3. Not a clue
4. Crystal ball question
5. Crystal ball question

1. Yes
2. Probably but if you wanted to crank up the settings you might want to upgrade gpu
3. Yes a single base station would give you seated and some roomscale but obviously no hand controllers
4. They have a warehouse arranged "in the EU" but havent said exactly where
5. No way to know

Seems Pimax have been misleading people about the refresh rate. Its currently only able to run at 75hz, despite the CEO telling everyone it was running at 90hz.
http://forum.pimaxvr.com/t/version-3-prototype-review/3822/17

This is a concern and to be honest if they had said "it's only 75Hz on the prototypes, but we are working for 90Hz for final version", then it would have been better received.

The fact they deliberately deceived (yes they did) people is a major worry on what to expect from Pimax delivering on their promises.

Apparently the dual hdmi version was running at 90hz, they are having teething issues with the DP controller and need to do more testing with various cables and GPU's to pin down - they say they are getting 85hz in-house but dropped it down to 75hz for demos for stability with demo kit.

I’m more concerned after reading about that...a few days left to make the final decision.im still hopeful and I really want it to be good, but I do have concerns about customer service, RMA if needed etc.

The Pimax 5K and 8K do seem impressive from a technical perspective and it's good to see another competitor out there pushing the frontiers of VR. My only experience of the current gen devices was some brief play time with the Rift and Vive (which was hooked up to mobile/backpack setup in a custom maze arena - really cool!) at the PC Gamer Weekender earlier this year and I was surprised by how more immersive the experience was than I was expecting. With the price drops on both systems in recent months I've been seriously considering taking the plunge and have been catching up on reviews, various reddits and installation/setup videos as well following the progress of the Pimax 8K.

I'd been leaning more towards picking up a Vive at the end of the year but I got so caught up in the countdown buzz that I pledged for the Pimax 8K full package earlier today just before they sold out. However, I cancelled it a few hours later. Partly due to buyer's remorse and the fact it's 4+ months off as well as realising that my 980ti isn't DP 1.4 compliant. I also suspect I'd need to upgrade to a 1080ti or next gen GPU in future to get decent performance so that's further outlay in a few months.

I'd seen some comments about the current Pimax prototype 75Hz limitation elsewhere -- which is a bit of a worry -- but have had a few growing niggles about build quality after going through a number of videos and reviews of the Pimax 4k. I'm also a bit concerned about their decision to embargo footage of the lenses. I appreciate it's a different lens technology to that used in the Rift/Vive and they may want to keep specifics under wraps. I think I just got a bit carried away by the Kickstarter hype and after some cooler thought feel it's better to hang on a few months until the final product is launched and hopefully all the bugs are ironed out.

Anyway, so it's back to plan A for me in opting for the more mature and established Rift or Vive system next month. That said I'll keep following the Pimax's development and look forward to reading reviews from guys here who pledged for one. :)

Hopefully, you'll also be able to pick up a secondhand rift or Vive in the meantime saving you more money.
Need to wait until Pimax have proved themselves before pledging and/or buying their final product.

I hope the Pimax is a success. Might push the other companies to release gen 2 headsets sooner. I also hope it's a success for you guys that put money down.

I briefly considered backing the kickstarter myself, but, I have too many doubts at the moment, so have decided to wait and see. Currently I am very happy with the Rift.
