Pimax 8k is live

I'm 50/50 as to whether I risk it and carry on with the pledge or pull out and stick with my Rift, I have something pretty cool I could spend that money on and if work continues along the current vein I can always upgrade to Pimax once it's established, or get the CV2 when it's out...it's just a matter of being patient vs taking a risk on an unknown, I suppose. I'm usually risk averse, but sometimes my heart rules my head when it comes to toys lol

I have been stung by Kickstarter in the past but more often than not they do deliver. As always, if you can't afford to lose the money then stay clear. 8K HMD will cost me £400 including delivery, with the potential for import taxes. The way I see it is I would have potentially wasted this money anyway on another CV1 after my last one broke, may as well take a risk on a much improved IQ.

I hope the Pimax is a success. Might push the other companies to release gen 2 headsets sooner. I also hope it's a success for you guys that put money down.

I briefly considered backing the kickstarter myself, but, I have too many doubts at the moment, so have decided to wait and see. Currently I am very happy with the Rift.

I tend to agree with you Melmac.

The improved res and fov is very very attractive to me... It's the reason why i chose Rift over Vive before touch was available. I thought i wouldn't be into the motion control, associating it with wiimote (which was cool for a week) then tiring. The rift has the slightly better visuals, and that few percent was of greater value to me than motion control at the time.
Fast forward to now. I still value the visuals above all else. But not to the same degree. Now i find the software and motion tracking much more important than i did. If i have a game that can be played via steamvr or oculus home. I always choose Oculus home, so do my friends. Games just play better and the environment less buggy. Oculus ASW really does make games smoother on demanding games, or lower spec machines. The higher the res, the better the home environment becomes.

I am reading in places that the games need to use the Pimax SDK to use its FOV. For me personally, this is a concern. As i have already experienced Oculus Home to perform better than SteamVR, i am concerned that Pimax SDK is less developed than either and will perform worse than both. When in reality to drive 2x 4k screens will need all the tricks it can muster.
All the talk of not hitting 90hz, bugs that will be fixed, software issues. I am not confident that it won't take an amount of time for the experience to be smooth. Both vive and oculus took a good few months to iron out major bugs. I have a feeling that either release dates will be postponed, or a smooth working experience for the 90hz 2x4k 200fov tracked set will be a few months further down in software fixes. Then comes the questions of "now the pimax is polished and worth buying, is it worth waiting for the vive 2 cv2?".

It will be interesting to see impressions from people who have had a week or two with the headset. In a calm setting were any fatal nuances are easier to spot.

Fingers crossed. If these come out and deliver (hardware AND software), i will be one of the first to buy and a very happy chappy :)

Based on recent comments, I'm out of kickstarer as well. I was seriously interested in the Pimax but it seems like a VR CV1.5 compared to other headsets rather than a full product. I'll stick with my Vive for the moment.

Though, I'm more than happy to be proved wrong, in which case I'd happily buy the product a few months down the line. Also, I hope it prompts delivery/improvements/urgency from other manufacturers too.

I've got a weird feeling theres going to be a lot of disappointed people, either when they miss the target date completely by a large amount of time of with the quality of the product.

I've not heard any good things said about their previous headsets other than 'theyre cheaper' and you get what you pay for.

As much as I'd love 8k, its upscaled in the first place apparently and I think theyve bitten off wayyyy more than they can chew with this kickstarter.

Yup, I remember a lot of the hype for the Pimax 4k too. Obviously not as big hype, as VR was still struggling to get mainstream. But in the VR avenues, the 4k was getting hyped and initial impressions where great (meant to be and reported to be the definite vr headset for pad games and movies). But they were sketchy and it feels very similar now.

Yeah, problem is it is actually 2k with no head tracking which increases them vom factor tenfold.

I appreciate theyve got that now, but they asked for 200k and got 3.5 mil so far, I just can't see them delivering what people are expecting, especially as their software is renowned for being poor

I think I might stick with it on the basis if it works (and the demo videos and most of the user reviews are quite reassuring) it’s a big step forward. Most of my VR gaming is cockpit based games, and I’m going to put together a new build PC with a 1080ti. If it’s ropey to begin with and takes time to sort out, I can always keep using the rift. It still feels like a bit of a gamble, but I’m willing to go with it I think...still not 100% certain though.

Yeh, it wasn't until it was released and people had more time with it that the problems started to pop up. Before hand, it seemed that people were only getting short demo's of the device. Initial impressions were coming back that it didn't make you sick. SDE was completely gone. The 75hz wasn't really noticeable with 0 ghosting. Once the product was released, many of these impressions came off a little like new toy syndrome. As many, in a calm non rushed environment, impressions came that there was indeed a noticeable difference in 75hz and that they could see ghosting etc. Leaves me more cynical this time around as this isn't their first headset. Last time was a big let down.

However, as cynical as i am. I do believe this will deliver more so than the 4k. But to what extent, i'm unsure. TBH if this turns out to be the 1.5 upgrade in terms of hardware, with as good software as Home. Then i will definitely be buying, even if it is not quite at the level that i would recommend (maybe something better around the corner by this time?). So i will be keeping a keen eye on this topic and hoping to the gods it does deliver. I got one wish this year. The price halved and my friends in the vr world went up 500%. That is my number 1 for VR, getting the masses in. Now that's starting to get satisfied, i want better visuals. It's like crack for my hardware itch.

4 player rec room quests tonight with my friends. Brilliant. Definitely changed my habits. Now i do exercise. The future is now!!! I'll remember this like i do my first gaming system the spectrum zx, then the 3dfx card that brought me from 2d gaming to 3d rendered. Now is the era of VR gaming, exciting times for us gamers and tech heads.

Yes. It just needs the next generation to nail problems like SDE and price and it should become properly mainstream.

With Rift's what?
With Rift's sensors, or controllers for that matter.
I think it was just pointing out your extra apostrophe showing ownership rather than a plural.

One of the downsides of early division within VR hardware providers not being compatible with each other. Should be more like other PC peripherals such as mice or monitors. They all work with the same base and the end user can swap them as they see fit.
