Playstation 4 being announced February 20th?

Doesn't feel natural. When your hand rests on the controller your thumb naturally rests on the d-pad. As all gaming uses the analog stick nowadays, that's where the left one should be.
You do realise you have better range of fine motion when your thumb is near perpendicular to the device, just have a look how you use a tv remote or a phone (its not just luck most shortcut/contextual buttons are at the button of the device)...

Its amazing that the left one should be where you think it is, but the right one is fine where it is, even though if it was on the left its would be in the wrong place using your definition...

Not really as the buttons wouldn't work as well positioned where the right analog stick is. The 360 pad for me has it perfect.

Range of motion is irrelevant, it's about strain on your thumb as you aren't using a TV remote for hours on end like you would a controller.

As soon as it turns war-like, I'm outta here! I'm too old and nowhere near nerdy enough to get into a pad fanboy war. :)

so what do you think of the sticks placement on the wii U pro controler?

Its about the angle the analog stick is in which is why the wii u pro controller and 360 controller put the analog sticks in places that match the contour of where you hand goes. Or are at least in the right area.

The difference between the PS1 dualshock controller and the ps2/ps3 dual shock is that on the ps1 the most important part of the left hand was the 4 d pad buttons and it made sense

In the ps2/ps3 generation the most important part is the analog but its no longer in the primary space like the ps1's d pad is.

I.E Bad design.....

I don't understand how one analog stick can be ok where it is (right stick) but the left one is wrong. (I.e not like 360).

Both are used in equal amounts and in the same movements, when playing a shooter for example...

For what it's worth, they both feel like they're in the wrong place to me. :)

I have no problem with the PS3 these days. If I had a choice of one or other I'd probably go for the Xbox mainly for the better triggers not because of the stick placement.

I used to use the xbox as my main console but as most of the people I know used the PS3 I started using that more (I've always had both consoles). I actually bought an XCM converter to use my Xbox pad on the PS3 but it wasn't great for everything as it was digital. Anyway, I decided just to get used to the PS controller again and tbh it was fine and I now swap between the 2 consoles with no problems.

But back to the new controller, I'm happy that it hasn't gone too far away from the original, it looks like it's going to be a bit wider though, I'm guessing about 2cm, so I hope it still feels OK and not to wide.

True but there are other genres of games. The Wii-U pad looks perfect for shooters, but, there are other genres of games. The front buttons are used more often for everything else. It also feels like the right stick on the 360 pad is sat further up than the corresponding stick on the PS3 controller.

It would be good if you could rotate the stick and the buttons. :)

When you hold a controller like a 360 one you bring your hands into it at different angles.
Its better to have the right analog SLIGHTLY offset as the MAIN thing for you to do with your right hand is actually a combination of both press action buttons and use the analog
The MAIN thing you do with you left hand is directional stuff, for which the best tool is clearly an analog stick and should be in the most comfortable area of your hand.
The analogs are far more offset on a dual shock controller which further compounds the effect of "its being in the wrong place".

However what i will say is concave analogs are a good improvement.

As a side note:

I think the gamecube controller for example, is FAR better than a dualshock.
If Nintendo released the wavebird for the wii u as the main controller (And the screen didnt exist)
I bet they wouldnt get away with the same pad bs sony seem to get away with.

Its 2013, That controller was CLEARLY designed for a time where the analog was not at its prime.
Lets move forward..
Dont mistake this for fanboyism, i actualy WANTED to buy a PS4 this gen as MS are p'ing me of and generally have no decent exclusives these days.
But I'm, not buying that ****.
Why not release an dualshock style 2 or something along side the console and allow me to choose.

I guarantee if they sold both styles and they were both purchasable with ease that the version with the analogue where the dpad used to be would out sell the original 5 to 1 at least.

:D

If anything, they should do this just to troll MS and tempt potential Nextbox buyers to the dark side :p
