Plusnet Discussion Thread

Thanks for the "Fiber" clarification, not sure why I thought it would be different to BT's "fiber" packages, which I knew did not provide fiber optic cable to the house (just the street cabinet).

Plusnet estimates we would get ~20mbps from a "Fiber" package, but given we get ~7.5mbps from ADSL2 (not 7500mbps as I wote yesterday), is this a reasonable estimate?

Our flat's phone wiring is from the dark ages, some sort of "star" wiring up in the loft going to two phone sockets that pre-date the modern broadband sockets with a removable half cover to expose an inner "test" socket. If the BT engineer (which I believe will call to set us up for "Fiber") was able to upgrade the sockets for free, I would not be surprised if our connection's speed and stability would be improved somewhat!

Activated today after my fibre cabinet appearing around last October.

Cant complain with those speeds, around 300m from the cabinet.
Slightly higher ping due to being on laptop, get 15ms on my computer.
Ordered a Huawei HG612 today so i can hopefully see some line stats as I was provided with a ECI modem.
Also on a Huawei cabinet so heard rumours its best to have the same brand modem.

The only reason you would need a Huawei modem is if G.INP is enabled on the cabinet, but since the enabling of G.INP has already started on ECI cabinets it's likely that the update has already been placed onto any unused modems since you should be seeing around 60Mb/s on the download side if the modem hadn't been updated (although the ping is a bit high, so changing to a Huawei modem might help).

I, on the other hand am most likely going to have to give PN a severe kicking since I've lost over 10Mb/s download after G.INP was enabled on my cabinet (ECI modem on a Huawei cabinet) and I've had to go for serious F5 abuse since some sites don't load properly when they should (plus I keep getting 02100 error codes on occasion when trying to stream on the BBC iPlayer).

This G.INP has left my internet speed unstable going up and down through various nights & day. The ping has also gone up to 30ms.

Now i'm left with a decision whether to buy a router/modem which is G.INP Compatible or wait for BT Openreach delayed trial test to be successful.

Signed up today from Be/Sky. Hope everything goes smoothly although I have a 15 day wait until BT Openreach can come and visit me. Bit disappointed that I can only get 30Mbps tops though. It seems my phone line goes all the way to the exchange instead of a green cabinet. Still, it's the upload speeds I'm most looking forward to so I can stream to Twitch without buffering.

I'll let you know in a few weeks time. :p

You wouldn't be getting a BTOR engineer visit if all you was getting was ADSL if you had an active line which most likely means that you are more then a few hundred meters away from the cabinet which is why you're only getting lower then infinity 1 download speeds (the base fibre package that plusnet offers is a download speed limited infinity 2 package).

The exchange is only half a mile away. This is all so confusing! I wanted full whack 76Mbps but it was not an option after the website did the line check.

So it's definitely Fibre available then, they will always quote the lowest impact range, in this case 30mbps but realistically you will get a bit more. Looks you're hooked up to a cabinet rather than direct to the Exchange though

Count yourself lucky, Fibre at my current place gets 25Mbps tops as it's just under 1km away from the cabinet!

30mb fibre -vs- 14mb adsl2 - your call :P

I guess it's not just me having slow downs in the evenings then? It's not great at the moment. Down to about 5Mbps at the moment even on my ADSL connection, it's usually at about 12 Mbps. Sometimes forcing a new gateway fixes the issue for me, there is definitely some congestion somewhere.

This is my average throughout the day.

Bare in mind I am using RTN66U Merlin QoS as I have brothers who think they have unlimited speed.

Since moving to PP from TT last December, the speeds have dropped from an average of 16mbps and a sync to the exchange of 21000kbps (oddly I could download from servers say Steams at 2.2MB/s) to a maximum of 14.8mbps and my upload was nearing 1.0mbps which is now nothing shy of 0.4mbps.

But it was to be expected considering its considerably cheaper than Talktalk. And with Fibre now rumoured to be installed by December '15 and not June '15 I'm gutted as downloading games is tiresome.

Yup, you're right. The map on http://www.superfast-openreach.co.uk/ pointed to the exchange. But it also did for my mum who is on 76Mbps fibre. So that was what led me up the wrong path. So is there any way online to find where "Cabinet 5" actually is?

Not entirely sure there is an online database of the cabinets, but if you have a wonder around you village then you should fine it, you'd be surprised, when you actually start looking for it, you'll spot it straight away, something you usually over-look on a regular basis. Given you've been predicted approx 30Mbps, I would hazard a guess it's about 700-800m away (telephone wire length)

ADSL contract expired so can finally upgrade to fibre. It says you don't need a MAC code to migrate since it's not a ADSL transfer. The ADSL ISP doesn't have a fibre service so I'm going with Plusnet. Do I literally just sign up with Plusnet and they'll sort everything, terminating the ADSL when appropriate or do I have to cancel with the other ISP first?

If you are also porting your telephone number you shouldn't need to tell your old provider at all.

If the fibre in my area is finally installed and ready to launch can I simply just upgrade my line from ADSL2+ to Fibre?

Well, your ISP (or your new provider) can ask Openreach to do it, yes.
