Plusnet Discussion Thread

Oops. I cancelled my phone line with BT. I might have to ring up and extend it as there is a week overlap whereby I might have fibre but no phone line. :D This is turning into a nightmare already.

The internet is with Sky who I had to contact to get a MAC. They gave me one valid for 30 days. If plus.net use it, then Sky is automatically cancelled. If not, then I keep getting billed so will have to keep an eye on that as well.

I have to ask why does Plus.net require a BT OpenReach engineer to visit to install fibre when my mum (EE) and sister (Talk Talk) didn't require it?

Some ISPs provide all-in-one routers and VDSL modems so dont tend to need an engineer, they just do the swap at the exchange, some however provide seperate BTOR modem and router, so the engineer (it wont be Openreach, it will be a sub-contractor) will bring a BTOR modem with him and do the quick setup

Some just operate differently

Thanks Jimlad! Aargh!

I'm not sure I like the idea of having two separate devices. I might knock Plus.net on the head and see if I can get a better deal with Sky. I think the black Sky hub I was given last year when Be changed over to Sky is already fibre compatible and is VDSL?

It does as MissChief said, but it has it's limitations, and other than the intergrated VDSL modem, it's not really changed since the SR101. It still lacks a lot of features a modern house-hold could require. Decent wifi coverage, gigabit LAN for those who want to hard wire kit such as media servers, no USB ports etc. It will suffice for the basic household if that's what you want. You also can't reboot the router as often as you wish since it has the VDSL modem built in too which DLM will pick up and notice.

Just bare in mind if you go with Sky, you won't be allowed* to use your own router, you will be forced (in terms of T&Cs and tech support) to use their hub and nothing else due to them using MER for authentication.

*There are alternatives if you're willing to bend the rules, you can use a BTOR modem and a range of alternative routers with MER support to use your own kit, the Sky Fibre thread is a good place to get all the info you need.

Up to you really - having two devices has it's pro's and con's, but I will always have a separate BTOR modem and router where possible.

Thanks for the advice. Everything you've mentioned above, doesn't apply to me anyway. I don't use media servers, gigabit networking or USB shares. I'll have a think about things.

Have a read of the SR102 reviews online before you commit, the wireless coverage and strength would put me off but each house/location is different and the SR102 may suffice in some homes, but be rubbish in others.

I live in a small bungalow so wireless coverage isn't really an issue either. :)

Anyhoo, I've decided to stick with Sky. So tomorrow morning I have to see what plus.net have to say about cancellation and whether they're going to charge me anything for doing so. If there are charges (even though the line hasn't been activated nor the router sent out) I don't know what I'll do.

The only discernable difference between the two is that the SR101 is Wireless G (the revision being a kind of *******ised G+) and the SR102 being a Wirelss N, and of course the VDSL being built in. The interesting thing being that I still prefer using my router as a passthrough and using the white openreach that common sense provided me. It's also one less thing out of Sky's control.

I have to say that for my money, Sky's been a good service; it's just that for the price of a TV package and fibre unlimited, I can get two dedicated lines for me and my housemate.

Anyone else on plusnet fibre have problems on Destiny?

I've had Plusnet fibre for a few years now and it's never went off once. When Destiny came out I had loads of issues. Went back to the game again after 6 months and having loads of connection issues again.

It's so bad, than when playing Destiny the router completely crashes and will not resume unless I close destiny and power down the router.

I've never heard of a single game doing that before...but it never happens when I'm not playing destiny.
I thus can't play if myself or my wife needs the internet for anything else - such as yesterday her workout was interrupted because it died.

I can get as good as or better deals elsewhere as I pay £15.99 a month for the 76mb unlimited package but I paid the line rental upfront in December so it'd be a waste to leave now.

And there is no guarantee I won't have the same problem elsewhere.

I've tried all sorts but nothing solves it. Oddly though, when I do make a change to the network setup it 'usually' works for 1-2 days before the problem comes back. So I've been changing the settings from static IP to dynamic IP every couple of days but that's not ideal long-term.

I should probably request a new router or something. The TG58n or whatever gets pretty horrible reviews and it is fairly old now

The same thing happened to me but on Sky. I was using a Thompson Speedtouch router (IIRC it was TG587n v2) and Destiny used to do all kinds of weird things. The lights flashed in all kinds of strange patterns which never happened unless I was playing Destiny. I've probably been through every animal network error there is!

But last week I changed to the Sky hub and since then I've not had a single disconnection from Destiny. Which makes me things it's not the ISP but the router.

Interesting - I guess getting a new router is the way forward then.
Must be something weird with that router or line of routers as loads of people on plusnet forums were having issues too.

All ports opened, even tried putting PS4 into DMZ etc but nothing works. Don't really want to buy a router just for a game, but a better router is never going to come in wrong anyway.

You would have had issues with destiny at the start since it uses P2P to connect which is heavily managed and a lot of people complained about it which led to plusnet altering it so connections related to it weren't managed anymore, but it might be that you're having a different problem so it might be best to have a word in their shell.

It doesn't hurt to call them since I just did that as both my download and upload speeds had dropped off a cliff (and when I mean dropped, my upload speed dropped to 0.71Mbps), but it had gotten back to normal by the time I got through to someone so I used the call to sort out the 10Mbps download speed drop I ended up getting after G.INP was enabled on my cabinet (huawei cabinet, ECI modem) and after a line test and an attempt at re-provisioning my line (I think that was what happened) there was a 2Mbps increase although I'm being called again tomorrow to see if there's any further improvement before it's moved to the faults team.

Had an ongoing issue with plusnet since i signed up on the 7th may.
Everything was fine on the first day getting 74mbps download.

The next day I thought I would run another speedtest and was only getting 23.5mbps every time. Contacted plusnet and they finally arranged for a Openreach engineer to come out this morning to check for a 'hidden profile'.

The engineer couldnt find anything and my openreach modem was syncing at the full 80mb. Rang plusnet straight after he left and spoke to someone who knew what he was doing.

20mins late he rang back and said i was on a 'value package' for some reason, rebooted my router and getting full speed again. Was getting to the point of leaving it had dragged on for over 2 weeks with not much contact from plusnet.

Fingers crossed my speeds now stay like this;

Just switched to Plusnet unlimited fibre from BT Infinity 2, hopefully it's a smooth transition and I get the full 80/20 like I do with BT at nearly half the cost per month!

On fibre, you will get the same speeds regardless of any provider, simply because it's all based on GEA. The exact same kit is used from the Exchange to your local cab, to your premises, to your master socket. If you got 80/20 on one provider then you'll get 80/20 on another provider. The only time it will differ is if you use the ISP's own router and some are dire
