Plusnet Discussion Thread

Expect at least a 45 min wait when you call. I wouldn't use them if they gave me it all for free :D

Plusnet? 45 minutes? Depends ...

My connection dropped the other week and PPPoE authentication was failing, tethered my mobile and started an online chat with Plusnet(about 4.30PM), had to wait about a minute before talking to support who immediately confirmed an exchange fault - excellent experience.

Scrap that, I've now moved and the daft landlords neglected to put an aerial socket in the lounge. Wtf?

Not sure I want to faff with an indoor aerial. They have the double fibre socket "for Virgin" so it might be easier to go with them.

Anyone know if I can get money back for my Plus net install? Seems to suggest I have 14 days.. Nothing has been done yet.

that purely depends on where you are. I was living in my flat and it was zone 2 london. you would think all ISP would be excellent. unfortunately virgin was utter garbage. i got 2mbps (yes bits not bytes) 24/7 since connection. I went with virgin when I first moved to the flat then again after 3 years of BT and wanted something cheaper. each time they told me utter lies initially blaming on the equipment - the modem and router, blaming on profile not being settled and blaming on network traffic (in that sort of order of troubleshooting). each time I persisted by asking if there was a problem with the wider network as I sometimes got the full speed then immediate after gone straight back to 2mbps etc. these sorts lasted for months not days or weeks for both occasions. and on each occasion they admitted (months later) that there was serious overcrowding at the exchange and they were looking to upgrade and this issue was known. what the worse part was the second time i connected to them i specifically asked them if the exchange had been upgraded and extra capacity had been made as i had the problem before. they just told me outright lies to get me to commit. and this isn't the punch line, the joke is the 1st time round - 2010 they said the upgrade was 6-9months away, to which i asked for cancellation and joined BT. and in 2014, same issue and they told me the very upgrade didn't happen in 2010/2011 and it would be min. 18month before they looked to upgrade. basically they can't pull their fingers out of their hole to get anything done.

so I will never ever go with virgin again...

my experience with plusnet's phone line has been no where near as the scare stories out there.

i had to call a few times when i first went with plusnet, i think i was connected within 8min certainly no more than 10min. that was through their customer services and tech support.

i have not needed to call plusnet for the 18months contract i had with them. then I moved and again, it was very quick to get through although that time, i wasn't pleased to hear that i was to be moved from FTTC to the old copper wire and I had to pay for the crapy-net. but i was still good length into my contract and really they had me on a chain. but getting through wasn't troublesome.

I am looking for sky or someone else to put up the offers for contract buyout. I like plusnet and certainly happy with FTTC but the reported upload drops concerns me. when i first went with plus net i was on 38/20 and i was getting full profile. I certainly don't want a 2mbps upload. thats pure crap
 
I've not had many issues calling Plusnet but then I do it during the day. My partner had to wait half an hour to speak to them in the evening once, so that graph doesn't surprise me. You can use the web chat to do some things...annoyingly not to initiate a home move though.

Headline speed. Virgin as a network is much inferior. I went from Virgin to Plusnet, then back to Virgin, and although the actual download speed was better with Virgin, browsing the internet and streaming etc with Plusnet was so much better. Virgin's issues are well documented, a quick Google shows this.

Depends on the location this is for sure. I get a 15mb sustained transfer from Virgin through my seed box, PlusNet simply can't touch that. For business users both Virgin and PlusNet are rank.

True, however I've found doing daily things such as streaming on YouTube etc that Virgin throttle it and the experience of Plusnet was far better. I could download at max via nntp using Virgin but I still would rather a FTTC service which in my experience are much more stable. If Virgin expand to my area, I would be tempted to run dual WAN, VM for downloading and FTTC for everything else.

They've been like that for so long, shouting about higher speeds is like saying more GHz is better as they did when the Pentium CPUs came out. If the connection quality is poor (high ping, throttling and slow speeds to countries where popular websites are hosted although CDN's alleviate that issue) then a slightly slower but stable connection would be less frustrating and better imo.

I asked Plusnet to up my IP profile because it actually went down instead of up after a couple of weeks, contrary to what I was told by them. They said it would take effect within an hour but annoyingly it looks like that isn't the case.
