Plusnet Discussion Thread

My dad has ordered plusnet for us tonight as well :). He didn't select the option to move the master socket though. Will the engineer be willing to do that when they arrive, if not does the router really need to be plugged into the master socket?

I thought that the extension was also moving the master socket, or at least installing a second socket but have been told it would have just involved routing a cat5e cable to another point. This is something which is not really too hard to do yourself so it is no big loss. :)

He doesn't want cables trailing across the place. I think the master socket is near the front door and the router will be going upstairs in my room hopefully.

BTO will put the BTO Modem by the master socket and your router had to be closer next to the BTO modem or you can use a very long ethernet cable from downstair to upstair to your pc. If your dad say no. Then the only option is to turn on wifi (N) at your router downstair and use wifi from your pc upstair.

Mine's been fitted :)
From 3Meg ADSL2 to 19Meg FTTC ('only' 2MB upload). I THINK Interleaving may have been activated as we had a few powercuts part way through the training period and the sync has dropped from ~22.5-23 to 19...but this is still far far faster than anything I could have got previously.

2.1MBps Steam downloads....lovely :)

Man, the only thing stopping me is the 18 month contract. A 12 month contract would be way more ideal for me.

The non-fibre broadband we can get in my student house is only 4Mb on a good day. I can get 15-16Mb with PlusNet.

Does anyone have much experience with getting a 2nd line installed? I'm thinking that might be the way to go if my landlord doesn't want to deal with upgrading.

18mth contract doesn't worry me - I guess you are concerned you may not be in this residence for the full period?

Engineer coming over tomorrow but haven't got a clue at what time. I'm gonna need him to move the modem to my room, how exactly will that work because the main phones etc are all connected in the hallway but the infrrastructure for my wired network all goes out from my room to everyone else's in the house.

Basically what I'm asking is:
a) Will the engineer phone or anything to let me know when he'll be coming?
b) What exactly is this 30m extension kit? Is it just a long ethernet cable that will come from the master socket all the way to my room and connect to the modem ?

The engineer will call. The extension kit is purely them wiring up some ethernet cable to another point. The modem will have to be connected close to the master socket. They will not move it from what is the length of the dsl cable, which is about half a metre or so.

Mine is gettting faster as time goes on, was only promised 52 down.

Steam downloads at 7.5Mbs now as well!

Ah nice that works out better, can just get them to wire it into my room. :)

1 more Q: The engineer wont remove the metal cable cover below my door himself will he? I'll have to do it myself?

AFAIK PN should have sent you a message or mail about the time of the OR engineers visit, a AM or PM slot - check out your messages within PN, or texts (SMS).

PN advised me that unless you had specified for a 30 mtr extension kit then it is likely that the OR engineer will not fit it just by asking. The OR engineer confirmed this to me when he came to do his stuff on my master socket. Whether that applies with every connection I do not know but you can request the extension kit and then choose to have it fitted or not when the OR person arrives. I decided not to bother.
I was estimated 57Mb and ended up with 67.8Mb (after nearly two weeks), so I'm happy enough.

Ok thanks, I did request the extension kit, they are due to arrive between 1 and 6 pm, just wondered if they call you beforehand to give a more accurate time.

The reason being is that we have 2 dobermans and need to get them out of the house before the engineer turns up.

Leave the dogs there, they will help to focus the OR engineer into making sure he gives you the best connection possible.

They give my brother an afternoon slot and the OR engineer turned up at 11.00am - my brother just got to the door as he drove away.! Thankfully he turned up again in the afternoon.

AFAIK you can't get a more precise time for the appointment.

Ok thanks for the help, dont want a one armed engineer.

I'll most likely switch to plusnet in the next few weeks/month, but I was just wondering about the master socket location and this extension kit.

My master socket is at the bottom of the stairs and there are no electricity sockets near to it (I believe 2 are needed for the modem etc.). I would like the modem/router to be connected directly to my PC in my room, which is on the first floor. My understanding is the extension kit allows the entire modem to be located up to 30m from the master socket. So will they move the modem to my room where there are avaliable power sockets and I can also have a wired connection?

I can't imagine everyone has 2 power sockets right next to their master socket.

The extension kit does allow both the modem and the router to be located away from the master socket. The cable my engineer used basically looked like a length of Cat5e, but only contained 3 pairs (only one of which is actually required).

Using the extension kit obviously requires a sensible route from A to B and an engineer that's in the right mood.

My master socket is in the hallway, with my office directly above. I pre-drilled the ceiling and office floor to provide an easy, and very short cable route, and left a pull line in place. The engineer installed the cable and left me to tidy things up with a bit of trunking (at my request).

In some office installs I've just provided a pre-installed length of Cat5e (solid core) and they've been happy to use that.

Our master socket is in the hallway too and there isn't a power socket next to it.. My dad doesn't want cables trailing around anywhere so I'm a bit worried that when the PlusNet engineer gets here things wont go well.. He doesn't even want PlusNet it was just me that talked him into it.

Is it possible for BT to come in and move a master socket?
