Plusnet Discussion Thread

Will any type of cable router work with plus net fibre? The standard kit won't let me get decent bandwidth over WiFi. Line is apparently 78mbit but only getting 20mb over wireless upstairs. Got a dual band receiver, looking to upgrade to a dual band router too. Any reccomendations?

Just a quick question here but how long after the broadband is enabled will the phone line be enabled? We had our fibre broadband installed yesterday and it's amazing, but we have been without use of our telephones for a day now.

Thanks :)

Did you have a phone service before? If so Plusnet should have given you a changeover date which is a bit following the fibre install. If you're geting no phone service get onto your current provider to raise a fault as the engineer has buggered something.

Yeah we had the phone working before. We now have phone and broadband with Plus net. My dad said maybe he is at fault here. He took the master socket off the wall as it's in a stupid spot which blocks a cabinet. Before the engineer came the socket just lay on the floor. So I think it's safe to say he's broken something lol..

An engineer is coming tomorrow to fix it apparently for a cost of £60.. Damn dad..

Definitely looks like you've been provisioned on 40/10 rather than 80/20. Assuming you opted for Unlimited rather than Essentials then this isn't right. Have you managed to get it sorted or is the situation still the same?

Hi Bob.

Still seeing the same, though I've just submitted a support ticket as requested a few pages ago. I'm definitely on the unlimited bundle.

Code:
# xdslcmd info --pbParams
xdslcmd: ADSL driver and PHY status
Status: Showtime
Retrain Reason: 0
Max: Upstream rate = 9518 Kbps, Downstream rate = 52296 Kbps
Path: 0, Upstream rate = 9495 Kbps, Downstream rate = 39998 Kbps

I've been with Plusnet top fibre package now for a good 4 months and so far so great! I have no complaints at all I've not once had to reset the router due to a drop out it really is a fantastic product.

If I were to buy a new Router like the Asus model pointed out above would that replace both the BT modem and the Plusnet box or would I still need one of them for the service to operate?

You will always need the BT Openreach modem in order to route the fibre connection to the premises the router is to provide additional network connectivity i.e. wireless / additional ethernet.

So you had almost like a gloried ADSL filter box?

This is what you'll get:-

The BT Openreach Modem - and then your (suitable) router of choice.

The BTOR Modem could go under the table in reality out of sight.

That's given me an idea or two; the virgin super hub is a little ugly but I would rather have it as a modem and my router wall mounted.

If turning off your is resolving the issue then it mite actually be your router and not the connection itself. Don't continously switch off your router because the exchange will see it as a drop in connection and start banding your line in order to try and stabilise the connection. If you are having problems you can always raise a fault at Broadband Fault Checker

We can investigate the issue for you. To determine if you are actually losing connection are you checking the DSL light on the openreach modem does it go off or start flashing when you lose connection?

When ever the internet stops working there is a red light on the router where it says internet. The instructions with the router say to power off then power on. I didn't know this could affect the line though . When the internet next dies I will check to see what the DSL light on the modem is doing.

I will try the fault checker you linked too :)

Just a quick edit. We have an engineer coming tomorrow to fix the master socket which my dad damaged.. Maybe this could be why the internet dies. If the internet keeps dying afterwards then I will do the Fault checker :)

Its fibre internet im on about :P

Ok so my Internet has just died again. The DSL light on the modem is solid green. The Internet light on the router is red. How do I fix this without having to power off the router? I've had to do this loads today. I don't want the speed to lower. I quite like getting 72mb download when it works :-P
