Plusnet Discussion Thread

Somewhere in the first 10 pages or so in this thread suggested that there was no traffic shaping but a few of the later posts states it does.....so is the traffic shaping noticeable?

They prioritise important traffic such as game and VoIP. Other protocols will run at line speed if there is no other traffic present.

How much does it affect the downstream?

From previous experience, it really doesn't make any difference. Before I got This:

Now I get this:

But that increase was probably due to the IP profile changing.

For anyone that's bought a static IP from plusnet, is this something you do when signing up? Or do you need to get setup with a dynamic IP first and then upgrade later on?
I just had a look through the site and (like the Pro addon) I couldn't see it in the order process.

its in the addons part once you have the service running, one off fee of £5

anyone here used their own routers?

i tried to set up mine using ppoe with the myusername@plusdsl.net and my account password but for some reason the router timeouts is there another setting im missing?

router im trying to connect is n66u

i did yes and with 2 different firmwares. a merlin build and the latest official one

did you add anything else aside from the username/password ?

Nope just ran the auto setup, i'm running stock firmware, i have not changed it since i got the router about month or so back.
Other than entering the user and pass i think thats all it ask for oh and the wifi setup, i don't think it ask for to me change the WAN Connection Type, well its set to PPPoE.

Yeah, it didn't make a difference on mine either.

Also, most of the warnings that I've seen about this are from really old threads where they're discussing ADSL 1 or maybe 2, but not 2+. I get the impression that 2+ works differently and the issue no longer exists.

Thanks for that.

got my problem sorted. if what i read online was true

seems the system/server or whatever is still waiting for the technicolor to reconnect and wont allow any other router to connect. turns out i just need to wait a bit longer until the connection from the technicolor expires and a new one to be given to the new router.

guess im just being impatient lol thanks all for the suggestions

Yeah, sorry I mentioned in an earlier post you have to wait around 10 minutes for the connection to be recognised as disconnected at the exchange. It won't allow for 2 sessions at once. However you can speed up the process by logging into the router and clicking disconnect under the broadband connection heading. Same when you disconnect the PPPoE connection through windows, it will disconnect straight away and you won't need to wait to start another session.

I had a bit of a strange problem last night.

In the middle of the night I was awake and went to check the news on my girlfriends Nexus 7 but for some reason there was no wifi connection at all whereas normally it is a good connection. Checking with Wifi Analyser on the tablet, the wifi from the router was not listed as being an active connection at all.

So this morning I decided to check the router log and this is what it showed.

Can anyone tell me what is going on?
What are the firewall logs all about?
Should the SNTP be syncing to the server every hour?
And why couldn't the Login wireless station get authorised? - Which by the way was the exact time the wifi disappeared from the nexus!

ANy light shed on any of it would be very much appreciated! As would any reasons as to why this might be happening.

Does Bob from Plusnet still visit this thread?

If you're there Bob, would you be able to give any indication of Plusnet Fibre availability for the postcode M4 6BB? I think I must live in the only central-ish Manchester postcode without fibre :(
