Plusnet Discussion Thread

Something strange today (well it has happened before). Router connected, modem says connected. I can chat on steam and get friends game messages. But no internet page would load at all.

Rebooting the modem isn't a good idea. If it goes down again, see if you can ping 8.8.8.8

Give Google DNS or OpenDNS a go.

No the Asus router is just that, a router which connects to the Fibre modem that is supplied by BT. It doesnt have a modem built into it.

mmm seems a little expensive for "just a router" albeit a very good spec.

I have just bought a WD N750 for £24.99 - cheap enough to use just as an access point, with 4 Gigabit Ethernet ports or even as a replacement for the Technicolor router...

you can see where I changed over to this cheap router...

...and the lowering of the pings at around 7:00pm last night. The second red block is where I was setting the firewall and had it configured to not respond to incoming pings.
I like the Gigabit ports and the dual Wireless (both 2.4 and 5Ghz).

Seems a good buy after all.

Thinking of getting Plusnet unlimited fibre. Would any recommend it or anything else?

Looking for something such as 36Mb down with no data restrictions. Budget would be around £25/month.

I'd take those stats with a pinch of salt, ISP's standard reply is they are only an estimate, according to mine, I should get 48/8, in reality its 30/5 and nothing i can do about it :(

I have got my FTTC install booked for tomorrow avo, but haven't received my router yet. Is this normal?

Should have had it by now, i had mine come about 3 days before my install took place. Ring up plusnet and ask them if they have sent it out or not. I had my mine delivered by the postie for the record.

We suffered a series of short power outages last night at about 5am, I guess our modem wasn't too happy as it appears our line profile according to the BT wholesale speed test diagnostics is now 57.03Mb rather than the 65Mb it used to be. Do I just need to open a ticket to get them to restore it to its previous speed (can they do that?) or will it go back up by itself.

Just seems a bit silly that a series of power cuts can slowly errode your speed. If this happened a few nights in a row you would end up with a considerably slower service than you started with.

It should go up by itself. Put the modem on a UPS if you don't want power-cuts to affect the speed.

If the line has been banded exchange side on FTTC it may need an openreach engineer to remove the banding. So please raise a ticket to faults.plus.net so we can have a look.

On Adsl a simple line reset normally resolves this issue but it's something we can't perform on a fttc line.
