Plusnet Discussion Thread

The website says I can only get 34MB maximum in my area, is there still some upgrading to do before 74MB would be available?

At 34Mb you aren't even up to the rated speed for a 38Mb connection. This probably means that it's a line limitation rather than anything else.

The estimates are often a bit pessimistic, so you may get a better connection than they're currently suggesting.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I spoke with Sky yesterday and they said that the Fibre Unlimited Pro hadn't rolled out in my area yet so I thought it was their end, but with Plusnet offering upto 76MB I thought maybe I'd go with them instead but they can only offer me the 34MB Sky is offering, do you think its definitely my line rather than exchange/cabinet equipment?

grrrr Sky have put a hold on my line, gotta wait until end of July now for it to be sorted. not a happy chappy I've had this phone number over 20 years and I'm not gonna lose it.

Good luck. I'm not very happy with Sky at the moment and I'm seriously considering buying myself out of my contract.

I moved house last month and Sky refused to port my telephone number to the new address, which was 0.6 miles up the road and at the same exchange. I've had it nearly 13 years, through BT, O2 then Sky. And now it's suddenly impossible to keep!

On top of a new number, they screwed up the switch and actually processed it as a cancellation and new connection: they charged me cancellation fees, switched me to their standard tariff and then charged me for telephone calls (I shouldn't be paying for them as I was on their Anytime/Unlimited call plan).

I'm in the process of fighting to get the fees & call charges removed but it's like banging my head against a wall. The call centre staff are all morons and refuse to help. It's now been escalated (I hope) to more senior staff and a complaint logged.

My wiring is old and I don't have modern master sockets, but GPO junction boxes. I'm hoping my speeds are slow enough that I can take advantage of their 'within 3 month' cancellation policy. Then I can start looking at packages like this Plusnet one.

It won't increase in the next 10 days.

Not using the Technicolor so can help you with that.

Oh well looks like 30meg then , still better than my previous 7meg for the same price :D

Fibre doesn't have a training period. Your're getting more than I get. Mine's around 22 which I'm very happy with coming from 7/8. I'm still some distance from the cab.

Is it worth investing in a better router/modem than the Technicolor they have provided ? if so which ones are recommended ? and if you provide your own router is it hard setting them up to work with your connection ? ive never used my own router before so not sure if you have to config them before they will work

I invested in the Asus RT 66U router, fantastic piece of kit. Didnt even bother opening the router that plusnet supply.

Was easy enough to set up my Asus to work with my plusnet connection, just let the auto config wizard do its thing. All i did was enter my username and password iirc and within a min my connection was up and running. Wifi is immense on this router, better than my old netgear one.

Its a fair bit of money but well worth it imho. Get one and you wont be disappointed. Its fast and stable, hasnt dropped my connection for the past few weeks, only had one in the first week of going live but since then been stable as a rock.

Does that mean the Asus router replaces both the BT modem and the Technicolour router...?
Or is it used just as a router and then you keep the BT modem for the FTTC connection...?

The wireless speed degradation, due to distance from the router, is not very good and my second (replaced by Plusnet) Technicolour seems to still get slow and lethargic and thus needs a reboot when it has been connected for a while, around twenty days or so.

Something strange today (well it has happened before). Router connected, modem says connected. I can chat on steam and get friends game messages. But no internet page would load at all.

Reboot the modem and it works again but still a Hugh green bar. On plusnet forums people are getting about 20/30 on their graph.

the internet seems to take a few seconds to load a page as well. Not instant like you would think being on fibre.

No the Asus router is just that, a router which connects to the Fibre modem that is supplied by BT. It doesnt have a modem built into it.

Changed to Unlimited last night and very happy with it.

Strange this though is when test speed with Speedtest get around 44meg which is much less than what my line is synced at which is 77meg. But when use sabnzb I get full 7.7MB/s download rate.

I take it speednet is reading it wrong ?

Try different servers.
