Plusnet Discussion Thread

grrrr Sky have put a hold on my line, gotta wait until end of July now for it to be sorted. not a happy chappy I've had this phone number over 20 years and I'm not gonna lose it.

What's modem/router that comes for free like ? Good enough or better to get another

Its decent enough, its white in colour and is named technicolour:p.

I tried it the other day and its not bad but i bought myself an Asus RT 66U router which is absolutely immense if you can afford it...wireless was much better than the supplied router imho.

What about the wired speed? Only the missus uses wireless so ain't that bothered as she still gets over 20meg on it (55meg wired).

Pretty much the same as my Asus router, didnt really notice that big a difference but as i said i went for the Asus due to the better features and better wireless range.

Def gonna get one after reading reviews of it :) you tried using it to download .nzb files. It says it can be used as NAS through USB drive

No i havent tried it with .nzb file but im sure its not going to have any issues doing so. I do a bit of torrenting and i usually max out my line 7.4mb down and 1.5mb up.

I have a NAS box myself, synology but its connected through my network and is accessed that way..all my stuff downloads straight to the NAS box and as i said it maxs out my line easily.

I made my choice by reading a few online reviews along with some youtube videos. It really is a nice bit of kit, looks nice and has blue leds as well.

Thanks for that info mate, very helpful. I was looking into getting DS213j but will try to use it for .nzb files, if it works it will save me a few £

A little whinge and a question about using the LAN2 port on the BT Fibre modem...

I'm replacing my Virgin cable that comes with the Superhub to Plusnet's Unlimited Fibre, that's got a separate modem and router. Not a biggy I guess, apart from more heat in this little room, but I'm also an ethernet port down now as the new router only has three ethernet ports (grrr) and I need a minimum of four here.

After a quick search I see I can potentially use the second lan port on the modem (Huawei Echolife HG612 version 3B with SP10 firmware) via a PPPoE dialler connection. Link : http://community.plus.net/library/b...-to-set-up-a-pppoe-dialler-in-vistawindows-7/

Now for the question. Will I be able to see the rest of the network that'll be plugged in to the router (connected to LAN port 1 on the modem) or will I need to do something else to get everything to see each other?

If you do the LAN2 port thing, I'm fairly sure you won't get access to the rest of your network. Say, 85% confidence.

But it sounds like you're wanting to entirely replace the router PlusNet provide?

Any router that supports PPPoE will do the job, though it's worth checking that it'll handle higher throughput first. Probably looking at £60+

Or you could spend like £6.50 and get a 10/100 ethernet switch and plug that into one of the ports on the existing router.

argh today was the date of my fibre and phone install but for some reason my order was cocked up and only the phone install has been done!

Thanks for that. Yes, after a bit of a read here the LAN2 port route does look fraught with risk. I may indeed just pick up a cheap switch for now and then look to replace the router after everything is stable in a couple of weeks.

Well, got my FTTC installed this morning. Very smooth process. So far, so good.

As an added bonus, the BT engineer found a fault on my line that had somehow been missed for the last few years, so I am now getting 74Mb download and 19Mb upload :)

The website says I can only get 34MB maximum in my area, is there still some upgrading to do before 74MB would be available?
