Plusnet Discussion Thread

I am thinking of joining PlusNet for fibre and phone, I'm with Sky at the moment but contract is up soon has anyone gone from Sky to PlusNet if so was it an easy move I don't want to loose my phone number and have read it can be a problem.

Why should it be a problem I thought it would just be a straight forward port to BT?
Sorry if this has been asked but don't want to trawl through loads of pages

Thanks.

I have just moved my service from Sky to PlusNet fibre and it couldn't have been simpler. PlusNet took care of everything and on the day of the install the Sky phone line went down and PlusNet took over.

Your phone number should stay the same as well.

Even got the Openreach engineer to move the master socket upstairs where the router was placed.

Just switch to plusnet unlimited fibre to cab, I know my lines good for 16meg on adsl2+ so should see a hefty speed increase! And the upload speed, sweet!

I know that this forum is mostly for Fibre, but i've got ADSL off of plusnet and just recently i have replaced a cable from the master socket to the router. The stats now look like
Uptime: 0 days, 0:55:08
DSL Type: ITU-T G.992.5
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1.248 / 19.999
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12,6 / 0,0
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 11,4 / 20,0
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 6,0 / 6,1

The btwholesale speed test shows my ip at 17mb but whenever i run speedtest.net it only shows as 10mb (what i was getting before)

Any help?

Well it's been confirmed today by the OpenReach engineer, I can only get 35Mbps as my line from the Exchange/Cab is Alu not copper, if I had a copper line, id get 50Mbps easily

Yay for cheap cabling.

Still frustrated with the high latency though

Moving to Birmingham at the start of August and thinking about plusnet with just the normal Unlimited Broadband at £4.99 and then once the exchange has fibre sorted out, September time is what the BT website says at the mokent, I was planning to upgrade to their fibre package.

Does anyone know if say the upgrade was done 2 months into the contract would there be another 12 months or would it be the original contract period?

The fiber deals with all the isps I checked seem to be 18 month contracts, but i have no idea as to weather they would take into account your few months previous.. Guess you have to ask them, they may cut a deal if you commit to the upgrade when it's available?

In the case of Plusnet, another 18 months. Sky offers 12 month Fibre contracts.

Yeah just noticed that they are 18 month for fibre. Hmm need some planning to do.

At home we have Sky fibre and the account is actually in my name (used it to get new customer F&F deal, though its well expired now), suppose I could cancel the TV, and move the internet though non fibre to the place I'm moving to maybe get a bit of a discount on it. And then my parents can just get a new Sky account when they move in September.

mmm seems a little expensive for "just a router" albeit a very good spec.

I have just bought a WD N750 for £24.99 - cheap enough to use just as an access point, with 4 Gigabit Ethernet ports or even as a replacement for the Technicolor router...

you can see where I changed over to this cheap router...

...and the lowering of the pings at around 7:00pm last night. The second red block is where I was setting the firewall and had it configured to not respond to incoming pings.
I like the Gigabit ports and the dual Wireless (both 2.4 and 5Ghz).

Seems a good buy after all.
Yeah, been a great router for me. I moved to this one from the Technicolor because I kept getting disconnected from the modem.

The WD has been rock solid.

So is that WD N750 a lot better than the technicrap that plusnet provide ? and is it easy to set up ?

Much, MUCH easier to configure to use than the Technicolor. It's ready to connect as soon as ISP settings are saved.

Close the Internet connection of the Technicolor via web browser
Physically disconnect it from the BT modem
Attach the new router to the modem and set it up
Done.

Thanks, what kind of ISP settings are used ? ive never used a 3rd party router before

username and password, along with connection type - as you can see above.

Also I had to make sure that I selected dynamic IP, even though Plusnet assign me a static one.

Settings....

For me it is nice to have a dual Wi-Fi connection, and it seems a little stronger as well. The Gigabit LAN is very useful and, up to now, it has been very stable and responsive. For £25 it has been a worthy buy for me, considering that I was on the second Tecnicolor router. I have not needed to use Telnet either.

I invested in the Asus RT 66U router, fantastic piece of kit. Didnt even bother opening the router that plusnet supply.

Was easy enough to set up my Asus to work with my plusnet connection, just let the auto config wizard do its thing. All i did was enter my username and password iirc and within a min my connection was up and running. Wifi is immense on this router, better than my old netgear one.

Its a fair bit of money but well worth it imho. Get one and you wont be disappointed. Its fast and stable, hasnt dropped my connection for the past few weeks, only had one in the first week of going live but since then been stable as a rock.

I did the same buying the Asus RT 66U. I told Plusnet I didn't want their router and they refunded me the £5 delivery. The wifi signal on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz is excellent all around the house and garden far better than anything I've seen before, staying connected to my phone on 2.4GHz even several houses down the street. All I had to do was put in my username and password and it did the rest detecting the connection type and setting the WAN up automatically.

The router's ftp server is great too, if only Plusnet weren't throttling my upload on port 21 from 1600KB/s to 600 KB/s...
