Plusnet Discussion Thread

Just had a open reach engineer come visit my house. Seems like my fiber extension was slightly broken. Now i have this weird filter. He also said my Asus dsl n66u was faulty giving out a high fault.

Man i should have paid attention to the signs but my internet seemed to work fine.

1. Weird high pitch sound
2. Kind of slightly warm but could not compare to other asus routers as i never had one.
3. Broken firmware out of the box.
4. Could not login with default password.
5. Erratic wifi

Whats weird was the fact i could not login with the default username or password out of the box had to factory reset to login firmware was already the latest when i log on router page. Not sure if that is normal. The Router was all sealed and new from PC World. Installation was broken. Instead of showing me a list of countries and isp it show me something else. Just reminds me to never buy from PC World.

has anyone switched from BT? my connection has been rock solid with them for the past 18 months but now theyre offering me a shocking deal in comparison with new customers so thinking of switching.

Anyone using DD-WRT on their WDR3600? I have problems with Wifi range and was hoping DD-WRT might have some tricks up its sleeve?

Edit: Decided to give this a go last night, I put the latest BETA on (r24160) and its great, after some tweaking the signal is both stronger and more usable, previously I would have signal but no throughput, changing the RTS Threshold to 2306 made it work even in my kitchen directly underneath the router.

For those on Plusnet Unlimited:

How does the Traffic Prioritization/Management work with Plusnet? Is it something that occurs in the evening or a specific time frame?

For example at 19:00 in the evening:

I want to:
Download a Steam Game
P2P Activity
Browse and Watch Youtube whilst waiting for download
Game after download has completed

Kids are:
Streaming Netflix and Browsing

Wife:
Watching streamed movies and browsing

How badly would the services be throttled? If my downloads and streaming take a massive hit I think I may as well stay with BT.

With BT Steam downloads are 8-9 Mb/s and P2P are 2-3 Mb/s

Thanks

There is no speed throttled rather prioritisation. Gaming and VOIP are the highest while movies & browsing is third highest. Torrents are given the lowest.

so if so one is streaming movies and another is torrenting, the one streaming will get the speed while the torrent gets less. In order to get full speed while torrent and steam downloading you must not be doing anything else other then torrent.

If you are playing games and someone is streaming you will not hardly notice the difference due to speed if you are on a fast connection.

So it is basically QoS.

Why can't they let me manage that? As long as they are giving me my full bandwith I guess it's not too bad.

Please note: rate limits are not applied to our current Plusnet Unlimited or Plusnet Business products.

We use rate limits with Plusnet Essentials and some of our older broadband products to make sure everyone gets a good online experience

For example: you're a Plusnet Essentials customer with a 5Mb connection. In your house there's someone playing Halo 4, someone else watching YouTube videos, and someone else trying to download from Usenet.
If we just let the traffic prioritisation rules dictate the experience the gamer and YouTube viewer would be fighting for the bandwidth and both activites may suffer. By applying a rate limit to gaming and YouTube we can make sure that both activities work properly, and any remaining bandwidth is given to the download (in the 5Mb example gaming would get 2Mb, YouTube 2.5Mb and downloading 0.5Mb).

getting confused now is rates and prioritization different?

I'm gonna go with Plusnet - just got to get it ordered before Tuesday.
With the TopCashback deal it seems great.

Do you have to specifically ask for modem only if you want to use your own router?

When I ordered PN about 2 months ago, I just picked the 'I will use my own router' option. Have you got a BT Modem already? If not the OR guy will install it when he sets up your fibre.

AFAIK they're still supplying the Technicolor 582n router. It doesn't have an internal VDSL modem so they must still be using the OR modem.

OR = open reach?

It's a new flat purchase with no internet there at the moment. The sellers had SKY Fibre before they left.

So if I choose the 'I will use my own router' option then the technician will just install an OR Modem?

is the Technicolor 582n a modem/router combo? Does it do modem only mode?

Thanks.
