Plusnet Discussion Thread

Easiest way to test on your PC would be to unplug everything from your phone line and plug in a telephone extension lead to upstairs to see what speed you get.

I did this permanently as I did not want a homeplug and I still get the full 40 meg download and 10 upload and even ping times are exactly the same with my pc In The test socket downstairs as it is using a £2 10 meter phone extension upstairs.

+1 ^^ Telephone Extension Cable will reduced your sync rate. Bad idea. Ethernet long cable doesn't affect!

I used 30m of RJ11 cable with zero issues for years(FULL sync on ADSL2+, Sky connection), everyone jumps on the bandwagon about it being bad when they've either never tried it, or used a terrible cable, it isn't ideal but it definitely works.

Migrated to PlusNet from BT infinity very impressed so far, web browsing is faster and speed tests are similar as well as ping times :)
The main bonus is saving £20 a month :)

Chaps got the router today, so thought I'd see it up so it's easy to be plugged in by the tech savvy Mrs

What I got is a technicolor TG582n firmware 10.2.5.2, being on my mobile I can't really check for what is the best thing to do about it.

Issues

No port forwarding just dmz and upnp
No way to disable the content sharing interface despite all content services disabled. It's annoying to see it on my home network scanner
Cant remove the DHCP pool, I can only disable the service which is good enough for now so that it doesn't interfere with my home network
No VPN or ip2sec guess these are wishful features
Disabled wifi and wps straight away
10/100 switch. wtf is it still 1997?

Pluses

Comes with dyndns
Other than that nice compact unit

Any suggestions on firmware guys

Yep put in Cat 5e or above network cable.

That's what I've done.

I have external grade Cat 5 that goes from a network socket in an upper bedroom, through the wall, down the outside of the back of the house, back through the wall to under the floor, to the opposite front corner of the house, back up through the floor to another network socket next to the master phone socket location. The PC and modem are connected to the network cable with high quality Cat 5e patch cables (thick ones with good shielding and gold plated plugs not the cheap ones).

As a result, I get a very good connection within the home.

The other advantage is if you have network issues, such as you appear to be reporting, you can connect a network tester (they only cost a few pounds) along with a long RJ11 cable (I bought a high quality 20m one for around £12), and you can then test the entire network from the end of the PC patch cable where it plugs into the PC to the end of the patch cable where it plugs into the modem in 1 go. This allows you eliminate any cabling issues and by taking video of the test at both ends of the cable, you can prove to your ISP that any issue you have is not with the internal wiring.

anyone elses plusnet location on speedtest.net come up incorrect?

since the start of my service (over a year ago), when ever I've done a speed test it's 90% of the time in london and on a few restarts it can say i'm up in birmingham.

now I live in south wales so obviously this is incorrect. but just wondering if anyone else get's something similar?

not really bothered as I get my 73/18 connection xD just curious.

I always thought it showed the location of the server that's being used?

Normally it finds the nearest to you.

ay, understand that. but the starting point is in london. and then when it selects a server to use the little man icon to show my location is never in wales xD used to be when I had VM :p just find it odd :p

xDSL in the UK doesn't have super accurate location information.

Bin it and buy something better? We pay ~£27 at work for TG582n in very small quantities, so the big ISPs must pay naff all for them. You get what you pay for.

Fortunately I ended up not using it as my current router supports pppoe, so no problem

Just had an outage :( Disappointing.

No commendations ?

Personally I'm very impressed by the low latency and the QoS they have implemented is impressive - everyone is happy from gamers to p2p leechers. Not sure how p2p seeders fair as I'm not one of them

At the minute, not really. Moved from Sky 40/10 to PN 80/20 so obviously a speed increase, but ping is up a couple of ms and there is a lot more noticeable lag on websites etc. - plus an outage already :( Only been with them a couple of months. Sky were poor overall but for uptime they were very good.

Show me a traceroute to google.co.uk

I've just put some monitoring on my connection to see how it varies throughout the day

Just had my fibre installed half an hour ago. Getting about 15 down and was quoted I'd likely get 20 down prior to installation. Any chance this will stabilise and increase over the next few days or is that what I'm stuck with?

Are plusnet doing any traffic shaping? My infinity contract has expired and plusnet currently have a good deal at the moment.

Thanks :)
