Plusnet Discussion Thread

That's a shame.

My modem was off for a week so that may have been the problem.

Today it was 73/17. Good enough for now until I move in properly.

Was told the full 80/20.

Though I have to say, Plusnet customer service have been great so far. Much better than Virgin's zombies.

Just bought a ASUS RT-N66U in preparation of my fibre install on Friday! Is there anything I should do with the settings apart from put my plusnet login in?

Cheers

a few things I did with this router.

obviously the first is putting in your username and password into the internet connections settings ;)

well maybe before that.... DON'T use the firmware updates through the router, i.e. the official asus ones. they are gash and screwed up the wireless.

look for "merlins" asus router firmware, he takes the most recent firmwares from asus but then rolls back some features, e.g. the wireless, to a state in which they are working properly :) if you use the standard ones (assuming you update) you'll soon encounter rubbish rates and wifi signal loss/drops ;)

another tip i think is to have the 2.4/5GHz broadcasts under different SSID's....so essentially two wifi spots to connect to :p can't remember why but I'm sure there was a reason :p

also MrMoonx, is it the install fee they wave but still a line set up fee? possibly? /shrugs

If you have updated to the latest Asus FW, is it still possible to flash Merlin?

is it indeed! :) just overwrites what ever is on there, just download the firmware and use the "browse" option to select it as opposed to using the "check for updates" route.

as other people have suggested, It might be worth doing a hard reset of the router too... but then having to put in any details/settings again.

I've never done the hard reset personally but might :)

Good to know cheers, just checking as with some smartphones, once you flash the latest official ROM it's not so easy to switch to a custom ROM. Thanks.

ay or ones saying "a newer version has been found, installation has stopped" :p so then you're stuck xD * shakes fist at the sky*

Want to switch to plusnet but keep trying to charge £50 install despite saying it's free when you take phone line, give up!

I think you're mistaking activation for installation as activation for fibre is free if you take a phone line, but if you don't have a phone line you still have to pay £49.99 to have the phone line installed.

Openreach engineer just left but said it will take a few hours /Possibly a day for plusnet to switch the fibre on at their end, So before I phone them have any of you had this? I just can't wait to get online :p

Everything is a ok here but I get an authentication error on the router :( Can't even check speeds or anything yet :(

That might answer my question, just switched from ADSL to Fibre today, been with Plusnet 10 years  .... and my download is the same 5.8meg !!! upload has jumped from 0.8 to 18meg... the BT engineer said he was reading 73meg down....
I've only taken then the BT modem and connected it to the EWAN port on my Billion 7800N... Which should be fine I assume, well it works, but no faster yet, even after reboot etc.

Mine worked straight away, you shouldn't have to wait.

Something not right there.

i switched from adsl to fibre, fibre was already actiavted when engineer came to fit the new master socket. i have never heard of them switching fibre on after the install.

plusnet dont have the connection active straight away they wait for BT to tell them the line is live (which can take ages) they then turn it on.

I just phoned them after the bt guy left and they turned it on straight away.

They just checked my account and found it hasn't been moved from ADSL yet!!! They'll sort it when the right people come at 9am.... Bit sloppy :(

I just got off the phone to a nice chap who told me the fibre was not active on our account ;) He promptly activated it with no troubles and all is well.

We signed up to plusnet's 80/20 from Hotukdeals and our expected down speed was 54Mbps but up speed I think is pretty low (Don't really know what to expect)
But I'll leave it for a few days and then ask questions unless you think there could be something wrong? I could chase it up with plusnet just in case.

According to http://speedtest.btwholesale.com/ we are currently getting.

Sounds like you're on a 40/20 profile so might want to ring them back up and make sure if you should be on 80/20.

Mine was active the moment the guy fitted the new master socket, plugged in the modem, synched up and speed test was 75/19, so unless the BT engineer phoned them on the 30 second journey from the fibre cabinet, I guess it was provisioned before he arrived!

I already knew someone would say that :D I am thinking the same. Oh well back to plusnet support we go :p

they did the same to me as well, also make sure your speed profile is also reset(you can check this from the web portal) under "high speed broadband" in the connection settings bit. i didnt get the true speed till they updated this, even after they moved me to the 80/20 profile

Turns out all is as expected.

I've just checked both the profile on our side as well as the profile set on the suppliers side and everything seems to match up.

The details of the estimated speeds you provided below show both a clean and an impacted range and you seem to be able to obtain speeds just above the lowest estimate on an impacted line which would sit within the acceptable limits. The testing done earlier to check the profiles doesn't seem to have picked up any fault issues either.

FTTC Range A (Clean) 69.5 52.5 20 14.9 -- Available
FTTC Range B (Impacted) 60 35 20 10 -- Available

Given the above, this may well be the highest speed that your line can manage with the current technology. If this doesn't change over the course of the next week I would be inclined to move the service onto the standard 40/20 Fibre Unlimited package if you're unable to receive any speeds that give you a significant benefit over the 39mbps you're seeing now.

I'll just give it a week and see what happens. Happy with the 38/39 Mbps to be honest as our adsl was only connecting at 2.5 :( We live in a crap area for internet.
