Plusnet Discussion Thread

So for some reason the engineer didn't install it where I said to upstairs...

Trying to route it back upstairs, they provide a red cable to connect it to the modem. However that's not long enough to go upstairs (i did ask for an extension). Is this just a normal cat 5 wire so I can use my old routers wire to that specific port it says to?

It worked, this router is pretty poor though!

One question I can't get answered is If you are direct from exchange will you get Fibre BB even though there isn't a Cab involved ?

Knowing my luck no will be the answer.

There is a solution for exchange-only lines. It involves installing a new PCP and DSLAM outside the exchange.

Or fttp. I emailed superfastlancs (living in lancashire) to ask them if my road would be done as I am EO too and they said it will be done by spring 2015 which Im willing to wait for since the exchange only just went live.

I'm in Lancashire but on a green cab, no FTTC yet but the fibre box has been installed for 3 months....BT were actually working on it all day yesterday so hopefully wont be long (wishful thinking?! lol).

This is the Hoghton exchange.

Monitor the wholesale checker on a daily basis. :p

Update:

'I was originally scheduled for a remote activation but an engineer popped round and installed it instead. However this caused a computer mix up and my internet was automatically cut out on the 8th.
I was told five days for a remote activation and I'm still without internet. Frustrating but at least the tech support were helpful.'

They activated ADSL instead of fibre and of course, sods law, I gave away my old ADSL router before this. Now waiting on another week for the Openreach engineer to come out and get me up and running again.

Been compensated two free months fibre but three weeks without internet at home is a killer. Especially when I cancelled Sky and instead have been using Netflix, Amazon Prime, Sky Go and Crunchyroll.

Another update. The Openreach engineer botched the fibre reinstallation due to an 'external fault'. So I'm still waiting to get functional internet back.

Just need to mention this in case anybody is looking for a silly deal, Plusnet have some on their broadband + phone services at the moment (of course, you have to pay line rental for all these, and they're all dependent on the phone packages you chose):
  • 76Mbps Unlimited Fibre + evening and weekend calls: £157.50 cashback on TCB, ends today
  • Standard ADSL Unlimited Broadband + weekend calls: £1.50 for 12 months, £9.99 thereafter + £70 cashback, ends in 1 day 11 hrs
  • 40Mbps Unlimited Fibre + evening and weekend calls: first 6 months free, £14.99 thereafter, ends in 1 day 11 hrs
The free evening and weekend calls is new too, I ordered back in June/July and don't have this.

Not a Plusnet salesman, just wanted to make sure people who need a new service take advantage of this! Do the maths and the 40Mbps deal isn't quite as amazing as it sounds (76Mbps deal is far better), but these are still better deals than they usually offer.

Yep, I've gone for the 76mb deal moving from BT Inf to them. With TCB it was a steal. Plus I've just referred someone for an additional reduction due to thei referral service.

Enjoying the speed so far, ordered a Asus rt 56u router however, as the WiFi isn't that great. Excellent customer service with speedy responses to my questions. Disappointed with the engineer and not putting the router where I asked for, but I guess that's the installation company.

im thinking of ditching the supplied router,is there any benefit to buying a router with built in modem or is the bt modem ok ?

ive been looking at the 2 routers KIA mentioned a few posts back

thanks,i dont get the best speeds even on fibre, around 24mb due to the lengh of the line , i was hoping if i replaced the router and modem i might eek out another mb or two lol , plus a boost to the wifi that a better router would offer is a big plus :)

Just had fibre installed yesterday, have the bt modem plugged into the plusnet router, what I would like to do is replace the plusnet router with my Billion 7800n router - do I just disconnect the plusnet router and plug the billion in having updated the username and password on the billion - previously the billion was connected to plusnet adsl line.

Only reason I ask is that the bt modem is plugged into a red port on the plusnet router is there any reason for this?

regards,

Matt

That's all I did. Took out the Plusnet router, connected my Asus R56u, and just set up using the log in details they provided, simples. No idea about the red port, guess it's for people who really need that colour coding help!

The red marked port only indicates that it also doubles as a VWAN port, so you just have to connect the billion to the fibre modem using the WAN port and you're all set (I don't think the username and password would need to be changed since they should be the same unless you changed them when ordering fibre).

I have changed the user name and password on the billion and it didn't work(connected via red cable from modem to lan port on billion).

Disabled DHCP on billion and tried it.
Enabled DHCP on billion and tried it.

Nothing worked.

back of billion I have an ewan port and 4 network lan ports.

on the modem I have red cable coming out of lan1 currently into plusnet router in the red port. This currently works but I would like my billion working lol.

Matt
