Plusnet Discussion Thread

Got it working as it should be now - thanks!!!

Connected from bt modem to billion router via EWAN port, set billion to EWAN PPOE updated my login details and it worked as it should.

Once again many thanks.

Matt

Well all was well, but the billion just dropped wireless and it doesn't matter if I reset the router or do anything with it, nothing can see the wireless - it's as though it isn't there.

Plugging the plusnet router in all is well and wireless is back.

Will have to have a play with the router at the weekend.

regards,

Matt

im thinking of ditching the supplied router,is there any benefit to buying a router with built in modem or is the bt modem ok ?

I have a Draytek 2860n with built in modem.

In my recent tests, when I connect using the built in modem, ping time to bbc.co.uk are 2ms faster compared to using the BT modem via Draytek WAN.

So it would appear there is very slightly less latency using the built in modem, as compared to the external BT modem.

How old is the 7800N?. I had one, I think I remember reading about the wireless chips in these overheating and causing issues after a few years of use.

Mine was killed by lightning :D

This has been working faultlessly when connected to the ADSL in my old house, just worked for a short time then I couldn't see the wireless at all.

Will try again over the weekend and see how it goes.

Matt

Been nearly 2 weeks now so my internet has settled.

More then happy with my results, 37Mb download and 17 up. Compared to 7 download and 0.8 up!

Got some questions regarding Plusnets Fibre packages and VDSL in general.

1. Do they do self-install? If not then I assume an engineer must come round? Is the cost included or will there suddenly be an extra £100 added on the on the invoice when entering details?

2. What hardware do they provide (excluding the Technicolor router)? Do you get an Openreach modem?

3. Socket filters. We already have ADSL filters but do I need to buy new ones? Was thinking of installing a faceplate socket but I don't know if I have to buy a specific one or whether any old ADSL one will do.

4. Currently tied in with another ISP in a contract so will just have to pay the remainder to get out of it. Not sure what problems this will cause but assuming it will have to be cancelled before any work can be done for the fibre connection. How long will the cut off period be? 2-3 weeks?

Thanks.

I can't recommend Plusnet to anyone at the moment. Their customer service has gone downhill big time. Long waits on hold (2.5 hours over 4 calls in the past 2 weeks) before getting through to someone, tickets going several days before being answered, taking months to sort out problems and not honouring deals even though I have it all written down by them.

Paying for 80/20

Get 78/18

Gateway is pcl-ag04.

Curious as to why you need the info.

Ta

Thanks appreciate it.

Basically my area went live about a month ago and not even all the cabinets are activated yet. In prime time my speedtest drops from this

to this

I was thinking it might be something to do with the gateways because fibre had only been enabled on my exchange for about a month and not all cabinets are even live yet, so didnt think it would be congestion. However its starting to look like thats what it is :(

It doesnt seem to be anything on my end as my modem still reports its connected at 80/20 and its been up for 48 hours.

1. There isn't a self install option, and since you have an active line there won't be any further charges beyond what you pay (but you'll most likely have to contact your ISP to get a MAC code to move your internet over)

2. You'll be supplied with a modem by the BTOR engineer when the work in the property is being carried out.

3. During the work in the property, the faceplate will be changed so you don't have to buy any new filters or fit a filtered faceplate.

4. I doubt that you have to cancel your existing connection before you can place your new fibre order since you should be able to place your order with plusnet and contact your current ISP to get your MAC code and pay off your contract as your line should only go down on the day of the fibre setup and come back on later that day once the fibre connection is up and running.

Just an update to my previous post, it seems my exchange is over used during peak hours, even though it only supports 6K houses and 200 non-residential. So waiting to see what they can do about it. Disapointing as the speeds are great between midnight and 4-5pm but after that im lucky to get 20mbit.

My speeds have dropped slightly in the last month. I've noticed Openreach have been very busy in my area lately so not sure if this has anything to do with it.

My modem died last week, had to book an engineer to replace it. Was with no internet for a bit.

My 18months experience of Plusnet is pretty good but it does drop quite a bit yet Plusnet always say its stable. Price is good but equiptment seems poor.

I'm now out of contract but think i will stick with them and review my options in the new year.

I thought I would be able to game and stream on fibre?

But the other night I was upstairs on the PC playing CSGO, and the missus was streaming a movie downstairs and it just kept buffering. But if I stopped playing CS it would work fine.

Surely it should be capable of handling both?

It might have something to do with Plusnet's traffic prioritisation.
