Political Correctness Gone Mad Again

30% inflation
Mass IRA bombings
Power cuts
Rubbish in the streets
3 day working weeks
Bananas being throw at footballers
Women stuck at home with the kids
Gay bashing

Yeah, great times

30% inflation - at its peak, but yes generally was higher than now.
Mass IRA bombings - Very few mainland events, in the 70's Guildford, Aldershot and Birmingham, a couple elsewhere of lesser scale.
Power cuts - related to the miners strike in '74, (see 3 day working week below).
Rubbish in the streets - one winter in 1979 and very localised. No worse than Birmingham recently in the news.
3 day working weeks - related to the miners strike in '74.
Bananas being throw at footballers. - A few incidents, football hooligans just did not get it.
Women stuck at home with the kids. Some may have been, as now, many worked (at least in the North).
Gay bashing - probably no worse than recent times, again a few notable incidents.

Any decade you can trawl for bad events. I'm with Faustus on this one. The 1970's was overall a good time and felt more friendly between people.

lol what? whales weren't hunted for oil. not the oil you seem to be referring to anyway.
Whales weren't hunted for whale oil?
Crude oil and petroleum refining didn't replace that?
What exactly am I refering too? Please tell me.
Clue: it's exactly what I wrote.

What do you think whales were hunted for? Corsets and perfume ?

You can literally Google stuff you don't know btw.

I had the time of my life during those periods, both at work and at play. PC as a concept didn't exist - Life on Mars was a pretty good facsimile.

There was no political correctness that I remember in the 80s, 90s or 00s. Not until most got into social media. So at least 2010 onwards.

Interesting read about the F1 Girls. In short they are not to happy about having their jobs removed by people who haven't a clue.

Why are people not directing their protest/anger at the people that directly employ showgirls, is it F1 or the track owners?

In a short statement on the Formula 1 website on Wednesday, commercial operations director Sean Bratches said, "The custom of using grid girls does not resonate with [the] brand values [of F1] and clearly is at odds with modern day societal norms."

This BS about women should be given the choice and equality to let them decide, is complete nonsense. It implies any woman can dress up/less and wander into a pitlane and drape herself on or near cars and drivers.

PR garbage as usual.

Claire Williams has backed the decision by Formula 1 bosses to stop using 'grid girls' from this season.

The 41-year-old, who is F1's only female team boss, told BBC Sport it was "a decision the sport needed to make".

Williams recognised 'grid girls' were part of a "long tradition" and that there would be a "mixed reaction" but said: "We have to move with the times."

She said she hoped F1 could "attract more females into the many roles available to them in the industry".

More pc garbage? Or just femanist gone wild in man's job?

In a way it is twaddle, she is a team owner/boss, she has been so for many years.
How many female pit crew, and how many pit lane engineers does she employ which are female?
She has had the situation to attract and employ whoever she likes for many years.
The pit lane girls didn’t stop her.

So I don’t get her point.
Pit lane girls likely won’t have transferrable skills to slip into other roles.

Interesting that you should say that. I guess it depends on your definition of PC.

The term started being used (in its current guise) in the 1980s in both the US and UK.

The rumour that “Baa Baa Black Sheep” was banned for being racist began in 1986 (although it has cropped up a number of times since in the media).

As a child of the 80s, I’ve believe I’ve grown up in a Politically Correct society. Throughout my school years I was taught be conscientious of other peoples’ race, religion, sexuality and gender (among other things) and to avoid causing offence based on those traits.

So I think suggesting that PC has only been a thing since 2010 is innacurate.

If you’re talking about the more vociferous “Identity Politics” surrounding feminism, race and sexuality then it has certainly become more visible due to the rise of social media.

However, while phrases like “safe space” and “trigger warning” are relatively new, the underlying arguments of racial and sexual inequality are much older than even the phrase “Politically Correct”.

She is just rolling with the motions considering Williams sufferred getting sponsors for years until Martini, that really helped them. She’s hardly going to go against the owners decisions.

The defence that it's a woman's choice is very weak. People who are financially dependant on the practice aren't the best judge of whether it should endure.

Being a walk on girl or grid girl is a completely legal job. The women aren't naked. They aren't being physically abused or coerced. They are paid well for something they choose to do. But let's assume for a minute that your point is right... If a woman is so financially dependant on such a job then it's likely they don't have the other requirements necessary to do what you may deem a 'better' job. So what will they now do? It's possible they may be ''forced' into an even less 'savoury' job. Taking this option away from them doesn't mean they will suddenly be able to walk into something you deem is acceptable for them to do.

You've misunderstood the point completely.

OK, perhaps I have. So would you be able to explain to me what the point is?

Turkeys don't vote for Christmas, that's the point. It's irrelevant whether they have other revenue streams, the fact they do the job for financial gain means they cannot provide an impartial point of view.

Whilst social media can be used as a force for good it's increasingly being used as a force which is causing harm. It no longer appears to matter what your political or social views are, the way they are being responded to on social media websites is nothing short of disgraceful. I think this is likely to continue until your identity can be clearly verified before you are allowed to post on social media.

It's not just social media however. Sadly more and more people have no concept of how to conduct themselves in 'real life'. The bullying and rancour being levelled at those in public life is quite frankly appalling. As an example, I don't agree with the vast majority of what Jacob Rees-Mogg has to say, but I do defend his right to say it. The manner in which he was heckled and man-handled during his speech at Bristol University was sickening to watch. I have to assume these 'thugs' have no social skills to enable them to enter into political discourse other than boorishness and violence.

A very worrying development that if not stamped out will come to damage us all in the long run.

No it wasn't. So if people are not responsible for their own freely made decisions then who is?

In the specific example of F1 Grid Girls, the decision is the responsibility of the people who run the sport. That decision will also be influenced by advertisement companies and broadcasters. It's a commercial decision based on image.
