the problem with the power brick is usually that it won't power up without unplugging and plugging it back in, only doing 24hz and then refusing to work altogether sounds like an RMA job

I was more bowled over by 4k than gsync. As been said before gsync is nice to have. Just a shame that the 4k with gsync monitors are so ****

Knowing my luck Andy it more than likely is goosed. But a mate happened to mention he had a spare power brick that is compatible. So thought I may as well try it out.

Looks like it. Started of by only being able to run at 24Hz. Tried another DP cable but still no luck. Then it proceeded to show no image at all. I've borrowed another power brick from a mate to try today as I've seen some users report issues with the supplied one. Many have purchased Asus laptop power bricks which are compatible. But I'm not holding out much hope.

Do you know which Asus laptop power brick works? Just in case my Asus ROG swift power brick packs up,

Gutted you are still having probs Rob :(

Indeed it is a bit if a hassle. Currently using an old 1680x1050 viewsonic. It too is on its last legs, flickers a lot on white backgrounds. My benq is now in use on my second pc. Haven't had much luck lately on the pc front. Delay in getting my 5820k setup built, dead backup hdd so no games and now the swift problems.

Nvidia cards tend to be more stable and have better minimums, think I'll be going the opposite route and getting freesynch so I have a more free choice of which cards I want and still get good performance either way. Not tried it yet though and would like to :p from what I hear they're both very good and most people think they are a game changer.

I got a BenQ XL2730Z and haven't really noticed the Freesync tbh.

I think it's probably because previously I had a 60Hz monitor with vsync enabled most of the time.

The extra frames, I've noticed!

I'll be hopefully able to confirm how good gsync is soon. My swift is alive and all resolutions are available. New power brick and DP cable seem to have sorted it. But ill wait and see how it pans out before I'm certain its a long term fix.

What advantage does Freesync have over Gsync?

Currently:

- cheaper
- has more ports to use than just 1 display port connection
- larger selection of monitors, not just with regards to brands but also various types of panels

The possibility that nvidia might support it with future GPU's....

EDIT:

Regarding "smoothness"... I am extremely sensitive to stutter so much so that I even have to use panasonics built in smart frame interpolation as I can't stand the judder effects you get in films/tv shows especially when the camera is panning on a scenery shot and these type of "features" are frowned upon big time....

But for PC gaming at 60HZ, I honestly find gaming to be buttery smooth even if the FPS dips below 60FPS to say 50FPS, there are various things I have to do though, either:

- lock FPS to 59 with rivatuner and use in game vsync

or/and

- use borderless windowed mode if not using in game vsync

As long as the frame latency doesn't go above 20ms, I'm happy, constant 15ms or below and that is what I call silky smooth :p

No doubt that if FPS are constantly fluctuating between 30/40 and 60 then g/free sync will feel much smoother though.

I find it depends on the game too as with some games, even if you are getting say 40FPS, the frame latency will still be <20ms where as other games with 40FPS can have 30+ms of frame latency.

The only thing that really sucks about 60HZ screens is the motion clarity, it is so bad :(

Indeed, seems to be a combination of a new power brick and DP cable that has sorted it. Hopefully thats it for good. Had a wee quick blast on bf3 just now. Feels so much better compared to 60Hz.:)
