Well your question was in response to somebody posting about what Boris said. Yes it isnt but why are you just ignoring what the buffoon said?

I'm not ignoring it - where do you think I have ignored it? I've specifically referred to it and pointed out that it isn't party policy! What is so hard to understand?

if they did it hardly changes the policy (depending on the cap) it just insures some rather richer people against some tail end risk - i.e. the tiny few cases whereby their care might cost hundreds of thousands and they have say half a million or so in assets to potentially lose.

for most people residential care has an average of 50k - 90k and care at home will be even cheaper... You could impose say a cap of 100k and the vast majority of people would have care bills well within that cap anyway

I'm still finding it amusing that what could easily be a left wing policy is getting so much flack in part simply because it is being proposed by the Tories - the change you're highlighting would mostly just serve to protect a small portion of wealth middle class people... not that it would necessarily be a bad policy to have such a cap...protecting people on both ends of this could be fairly sensible

But it does show that they have (a) no idea what their electorate want (b) crumble at the first sign of trouble - if anyone thinks we're not going to get a hard Brexit with May-hem and co at the wheel they are sorely deluded

Aye. From a credibility standpoint; they're shot. Not that any party had much credibility to begin with, HOWEVER this was supposedly May's mantra for Brexit. Ho-hum.

it doesn't show that necessarily - I think they're aware that this policy was a pretty bold move. I'm not sure how you can say that this represents them crumbling at the first sign of trouble... again this is a policy in a manifesto it hasn't even been debated in parliament yet and putting in a slight change to it (which might not even change how it applies to the vast majority) is rather bizarre to paint as crumbling at the first sign of trouble. The policy already includes a floor it is hardly a leap to include a cap too.

annnd ....here's the U-Turn:

George Osborne, the former Conservative chancellor who now edits the Evening Standard, says the government will perform a U-turn over social care, and impose a cap on costs.

https://twitter.com/George_Osborne?ref_src=twsrc^tfw&ref_url=https://www.theguardian.com/politics/live/2017/may/22/general-election-2017-theresa-may-social-care-fallout-politics-live

from his twitter feed.

Is this really the strong negotiator that the UK wants for Brexit ?

I don't know why anyone would believe that, Do a U-turn, Get the Votes, Do another U-turn once they are in.

I could see this coming a mile off after that one issue seems to have cut their lead from 20% to 10%.

Best if it is, nothing has really changed. It will convince a few that the Tories changed their mind. But then they will do it anyway and say Osborne wasn't speaking for party policy.

Yes it's not a tax on the rich, it's a tax on normal working people. As usual.
Yep, the more they talk, the more I think people are seeing them as the "nasty party" again.

Come back, Cameron, (almost) all is forgiven.

Watching this all unfold is certainly interesting, if a bit depressing.

I wonder if the daily mail will reprint its "tough but fair" headline and condemn them for backtracking... And say if she uturns on this how can she be a good negotiator

Or will they word it so she has 'listened to the people and is no longer doing what is needed for the future of the country... Even if its tough love'

Will do a u-turn replace do a barrel roll .... :D :D

edit --->

HOLY **** I just Google'd do a barrel roll and the page did a barrell roll!

How did I not know this?!??!

Firstly, if the last seven years has taught us anything it's that you really shouldn't trust anything George Osborne says. Secondly is it really a u-turn if you're not actually changing anything in your manifesto? The proposed changes to social care provision in the Tory manifesto are compatible with the application of a cap on costs - I think a politician would call this a "clarification".

"absolute limit on the amount people have to pay for their care costs" will be an option when (read if) there is consultation on the proposal.

Keep arguing dowie, Tory support has already dropped .2% in the poll here in the last 2 hours. You're doing a grand job! :D

Strong and Stable! What a rabble.

well what has been proposed so far has included what is essentially a 'floor' of 100k if they were to introduce a 'cap' (say 100k) above that then it wouldn't make any difference for most people except to insure the estates of a small portion of people requiring rather a lot of care... and thus remove the 'bedroom tax' style branding the press/opposition are going for: 'dementia tax'

If they do a U-turn on what was one of their front and centre "no negotiation" policies, it hardly bodes well for their capacity to negotiate a strong deal for Brexit, does it?

where exactly is this 'no negotiation' coming from and why is this a u-turn?

Bloomin' heck - it's almost like the Tories don't actually want to win this election!

Very worrying the way the left-wing media is focusing on issues with the Conservative's manifesto and ignoring Labour weaknesses like Corbyn's support for the IRA. I was worried about a 'coalition of chaos' with Labour, Lib Dems, Greens and SNP but given the way the media has turned the tide and that we still have the old boundaries that unfairly benefit Labour I'm thinking we could end up with Labour in government propped up by Nicola Sturgeon's SNP!

She's a horrible, despicable lying bag of **** but people will still vote for her. You'll get what you deserve (totally screwed) when they get in power.
