Popular games you just don't get

I just don't get why anyone would want to play a 2d game in any direction :confused: I know there are some popular ones, I even bought Cuphead, but I just couldn't get into it :( I just don't see the point or attraction when you have fully immersive 3d games that you can play instead :cool:

I find 2d is good for the exact reason they can be less immersive. Metal Slug is just a fun pick up and play arcade shooter for less than an hour. No game saves required, quick levels that you can blast through once you've learnt each level and the challenge comes from the next new level, so a lot like Sonic and older 2d games.

These new 2d adventure games require the player's imagination to be immersed i expect, i've not tried one though. I find many modern 3d games lack immersion due to (as mentioned in an above post), too many cut scenes or annoying simulation/hand holdy type play.
 
Driving games. I can get behind the whacky arcadey ones, but the driving sims... Why not just go for a drive in a real car?!

Why play an FPS ... Why not just buy a gun and shoot real people?! Each to their own on opinions but I find your reasoning odd. Almost all games allow you to experience things that you can't in real life; whether that's racing cars, being on a battlefield or fighting a 90ft tall undead boss with 6 arms with a sword and your magical potions.

As for on topic, I'll add another vote for battle royale games. They seem to always be walking simulators where you might get to shoot someone eventually or you get sniped from a mile away from someone who was barely a pixel on your screen.
 
I primarily go for games with a good narrative these days, and the amount on the pc seems to be declining.

I used to play a lot of FPS games but with all the issues of hitreg/skill match/cheating (aimbots are ridiculously prevalent these days) etc I've been put off, the games are usually just reskins anyway but they insist on a "new game" and fracturing the community.

Borderlands bored me to tears, I think I tried 4 times to get into it. I didn't care about the overarching story because it seemed so basic and the game play just amounts to running around and shooting models with different skins that drop randomly generated loot, is the fun factor from getting a shiny weapon that lets you do x more damage and looks slightly prettier?

I remember Red dead 1 being amazing and really hooking me into the story. Red dead 2 just felt really boring to play, didn't really care for the characters much and the bad writing / decisions of the characters just put me off.

Witcher 3 is definitely not as good for the narrative as 1 and 2 for me, though it does look a lot prettier.

The last GTA I really enjoyed was san andreas.

Dishonoured is another I couldn't get into.

I avoid MMOs (played wow for over a decade when it was released) because I realised how predatory they are and how much your time they steal. I suppose theres the fact that they have just gone into clone territory since wow and its all about microtransactions and time sinks. Mobile games are similar.

I worked on driving games for over a decade and I'm absolutely sick of the genre (wasn't a fan when I started my job to be honest but the company was more diverse back then).

For me it's RPG>FPS>Adventure>Strategy>Sim.

Been looking at grabbing a new game and I keep seeing popular games that I just know I wouldn't like despite their popularity.

That got me thinking and I figured let's see what games everyone seems to love that the OCUK community just don't get and why.

So for me I'll start us off with Borderlands, Borderlands 2 technically as I never played the first outside of trying it at a trade show.

So it's supposed to be a somewhat fast paced shooter but you have to stop every few seconds to pick up your loot then appraise your collection of items to determine the optimal gear. Obviously I'm exaggerating but it feels like every time I kill someone comes with 5 minutes of inventory management which kind of pulls me out of the action. What's worse if you're playing co-op which seems to very much be the point it just makes it worse as you've now got 4 people doing it.
Understandable. For me that's mostly earlier on though tbh, you soon learn what you want and ignore everything else pretty quickly IMO.

BR games for me.

Rust. Like the idea, but kill on site ruins games like this IMO. You spawn with nothing start running and get snipped. Rinse/repeat. Well done, you've managed to snipe someone with no armour or weapons, that must be an achievement. :rolleyes:

Hm, quite tough as I took an extensive break from gaming so have dipped in and out. Within the last 2 years I've been playing a lot of CRPGs.

Despite the technical flaws which seem to be common in the CRPG genre I really enjoyed:

Pathfinder games
Divinity 2
Pillars of eternity
Tyranny
Disco Elysium

I am however looking forward to:

Starfield
Vampire bloodlines 2
Stalker 2
Baulders gate 3
System shock
The last of us
I'll retry the the witcher 3 remake
The deadspace remakes as I never really played them

For me there are several games/genres I don't understand the popularity of :

Multiplayer FPS games / Call of Duty - the cheating that is rife in these games puts me off them completely. With a group of friends on a private server I can see the appeal.
MOBA games : I'm with Tombstone on this one, they are just so dull and repetitive.
Survival games : again, I just find them dull & repetitive. Also, many are early access ergo full of bugs ; I don't like paying to be a beta tester. As with the FPS genre cheating is commonplace. Playing with friends on a private server would increase the enjoyment.
FIFA ( and any other EA sports game ) : so little effort put into these games by the developer. Each annual release is just a shameless reskin of the one before it. And microtransaction hell. The latter makes EA more than £1.5 billion/year - let that sink in. I feel sorry for the suckers who feel compelled to splurge cash on ultimate team cards every year.
 
Halo.... The original was ok, but never understood why it was so popular.

Maybe God of War, honestly didn't like the game, found the game world too cluttered and the gameplay / combat while not difficult just felt like rinse and repeat.
 
There are very few games I don't get the appeal of, maybe BR stuff is not my cup of tea and I'm not too big on RTS games but I understand why people are.

I can easily switch between more exotic Japanese stuff and mainstream Western titles.

I like driving/rally sims but I also like arcade racers.

I love soulsborne games as there's much more to them than difficulty but I can also enjoy typical handholdy stuff or rpgs with lots of dialogue.

I like slower games that thrive on story, immersion and world detail like RDR but I can also get into technical combo-heavy hack'n'slashers like DmC or Bayonetta where you have to put quite a lot into the combat alone to even "get" it.

I do think quite a few of those mainstream games have some serious flaws but that's an issue completely separate from my enjoyment of said titles.

I'm pretty flexible when it comes to gaming overall, I think at least:P Makes it a bit easier to judge the merits of certain games as I've tried quite a lot of titles that couldn't be more removed from each other and more or less know what irks me the most in each genre.
 
I've never played an open world game where that cool looking thing in the distance was anything but a bastion of time wasting disappointment. Elden Ring is made worse for being one and I hate it.

Sonic games. Okay I do play them from time to time but I have never felt like I've got an idea on how they are meant to be played. How are you even supposed to play these games? Do you get the highest ring count, highest score, fastest time, go slow, defeat all enemies... The guy moves too fast, so half the stuff you just miss or jump over but going slow just feels wrong.

BG1 & 2 are real time with pause (the turns exist but they keep on going). Was one of major annoyances when they announced BG3 and it was turn based. The rest of the description I agree with though :D
