Porsche Owners Thread - If you own one or just like or hate them! :)

I had none N rated PS4S on both my C2S and GT3, both under warranty, was never an issue. I guess official stance is warranty void but speak to your local dealer, let them know your thinking of fitting such tyre and will it be an issue?

On my C2S it was Supersports but the N rated options were poorer PS2 and some of not so great tyres, the dealership at the time fully understood I wanted to fit the better tyre and as such turned a blind eye to it I guess.
On my GT3 it had PS4S and I cannot remember if N rated or not, but the PS4S was never approved for GT3 it was either Dunlop or Cup 2, but again the owner prior to me fitted them because he used it as a daily and wanted a tyre which was also OK in the wet, Porsche dealership put him a warranty on the car with PS4S fitted and never mentioned the tyres. So two different dealerships, both seeing common sense.
Ok that's great - good advice thanks, I'll ask the Porsche dealer - hopefully they can be grown up about it! :)

End of the day dealers want to sell warranties and want to carry out warranty to work, to make a fuss over the tyres fitted loses them said work and money for carrying out warranty work.

Front discs finally arrived, originally had Brembo Turismo on order, delivery went from Oct to Nov, then Dec and pushed out to Mar, cancelled and went with Giro and delivered within a week.

Joined the Porsche Owners club with a 996 Turbo... need to get 4 wheel alighment done, any recommendations? I'm in South Wales. Car is a manual with 66k miles :)

Also what are the best tyres to get, wheels are 20" Techart, front 2 are worn as the alignment is out but want to replace all 4 at the same time.

Pilot sport tires as already mentioned and center gravity if you want the alignment done properly.

I like Chris don't get me wrong, but he is ******* expensive, and I'm sure there are equally competent geometry places closer to South Wales.

End of the day if you know what alignment settings you want any garage can do it with a decent alignment machine, there is no black magic to it.

Now of course if garage needs to un-seize suspension components it add more labour and at £100 plus per hour the price will of course go up.

For example when I did the 458 I just took it the local place with a Hunter machine, loaded up the Speciale values and set those on my car but dialled the front toe out back to toe neutral to calm the hyper sensitive steering down a bit, as I say there is no magic about it and on modern cars its pretty easy, the Ferrari is more difficult for camber as your guessing with shim sizes with trial and error but toe is same on every car, turn the nut and tighten once at desired value and do in correct order, give the car a quick move up and down, re-check values. It is 1-2hrs works for most cars, obviously on some its longer if your car uses shims or has seized up at which point your adding on the labour hours.

Agreed, if you know what settings you want and everything is free and easy to work on.

My 996TT had seized bits all over the suspension, although I was having the suspension completely replaced and then when replaced it was setup like a GT2 instead instead of standard TT.

Thanks guys, I will go for a set of Pilot Sports for the tyres. The below were all the advisories (apart from tyres) I've had done along with a service at local Porsche speiclaist CMD Porsche.

  • Nearside Front Track rod end ball joint has slight play (2.1.3 (b) (i))
  • Offside Front Inner Tyre worn close to legal limit/worn on edge (5.2.3 (e))
  • Nearside Front Inner Tyre worn close to legal limit/worn on edge (5.2.3 (e))
  • Offside Front Brake pipe corroded, covered in grease or other material (1.1.11 (c))
  • Offside Front Brake hose has slight corrosion to ferrule (1.1.12 (f) (i))

I've heard of center gravity for the aligment but have read a lot of feedback of it being way over priced, I don't mind spending the money but not unnecessarily. I've been reccomended Mustoes Specialist Vehicle Body Repairs which are fairly local to me, they have worked on various high end cars before but are not really a specialist place. It's £78 from there and a hunter machine. I'm just looking for it to be set to factory settings, the car is going to be used as my daily.

Quick update, had the alignment done at Kwik Fit just a few miles from me in the end, as I've known the guys there for years and a few of them are extremely familiar with the Hunter machine and have done various Porsches in the past, plus I had 25% trade discount bringing it to £108 total with adjustment needed on all 4 corners, took around an hour in the end, everything was nice and easy to adjust. Had it set up to stock settings and it's made a big difference with how it drives now. There is still over 4mm on all tyres and the fronts although worn on the inside it was slight so not going to change them immediately although they are Hancock S1 Evo so not the best tyre for the car.

I have ordered the PS4s however whilst Camskill have a good price and cashback available, I can get them fitted for free from a friend in the trade so all in all a good price IMO, probably will put them on sooner rather than later, although there are slight marks on a few of the wheels so may get these repaired at the same time as fitting the tyres.

Michelin Pilot Sport 4s
245 30 20 £247.75 each
305 25 20 £322.95 each
Delivery £23
£1164.40 delivered (£60 cashback) = £1104.40 delivered

Quick picture of the underside whilst it was up on the ramps and the correct settings now dialled in. Proper pictures to come of the car tomorrow once I have cleaned it again following the bad weather! Replacing my 2014 320D as my daily so quite the change, although I have had performance cars from 18 starting with an Evo II, sometimes as dailys, often as a 2nd weekend car. Cirsumstances have changed allowing me to have the 911 as a daily, I'm almost fully remote working now with the office just 6 miles away if I do pop in. I have also got an R32 GTR which will be back on the road summer time, will be creating a new thread for this, which wiill be my weekend car :) Gunmetal grey with extensive mods running just over 500BHP. The Porsche despite being "only" 420BHP feels a hell of a lot quicker than the figure suggests.

Doing some research on the car, the paint colour is Biarritz White which was only available in 2000-2001 on the 996 turbo. Just 5349 996 turbo were produced during this time, with I believe black, silver, grey taking up over 50% of all colours. Blue also being popular and then Guards Red and Speed Yellow around 10% each (estimates as Porsche do not publish the info), with the rest of the colours a lot less, possibly only 2% in Biarritz White during this period before 2002 when the white option changed to "Carerra White" and then became slightly more popular with the 997, with TechArt using it as their poster car (with the same 20" TechArt wheels I have fitted :)). Currently there are no "Any colour white" 996 turbo in the UK that I can see for sale, and no Manual Biarritz White for sale in the world, with just one auto available in Switzerland but in LHD.

I've also deciphered the VIN and options codes on the car -

L9A2 = White Biarritzweiss (extremely rare)
C16 = UK
XPA = Thicker leather steering wheel
X97 = Aluminium inlay gearstick
X98 = Aluminium inlay handbrake lever
567 = Top-tinted windscreen
650 = Sun-moon-roof
662 = PCM 1 Porsche Communication Management screen with navigation, telephone module, radio, cassette player
663 = Telephone handset
689 = Preparation for CD changer
762 = Market launch or dealer demo car
939 = Draped leather rear seats
982 = Draped leather front seats
09991 = Manufacture from the exclusive-programme
The exclusive program is where they tweak the cars with special options that are not included in the normal setup.

Next step is to get the Porsche Classic Communication Management (PCCM) system fitted, have already got the quote from Cardiff Porsche coming in at £1500 + fitting, being around half a day to do. This will retain the classic look whilst giving the same functionality of the system fitted to the newest 911's including Apple car play, updated Sat Nav, smart phone connectivity, USB/AUX port, new GPS unit and speaker/mic for phone bluetooth connection. Example below -

Any other 996 Turbo owners on here? I am considering uprating the Turbos as they are prone to failure, despite the engine being almost bullet proof, being the Metzger water-cooled twin-turbo 3.6-litre flat-6 engine derived from the 1998 Le Mans winning 911 GT1 race car. I would likely go for slightly larger hybrid turbos and upgrade the Intercooler, exhaust and clutch at the same time with a mild tune although this would cost in the region of £10k I believe.

9e are renown for their 911 turbo tuning packages. If you’re having to replace a turbo (something I’d only do if one failed), I’d certainly look into upgrading rather than replacing the stock item.

Lovely looking car! Hope you’re enjoying it.

Thanks, will take a look in to them! Yes will definitely upgrade them if/when needed if not before, rather than stock as they are a weak point. It's insanely fast as it is though so I am tempted to wait if/until a turbo or the clutch goes. Then I will do the lot in one go.

A few other pics I've got, will get some decent ones tomorrow hopefully :) Still have the original Turbo wheels but I think the TechArt ones completely transform it and it still drives great. Only other modification is a short shift on the gearbox as the original feel is terrible with such a long throw.

And very much enjoying it! Only done 600 miles since July so even as a daily I will be keeping the mileage low. Unfortunately I will soon only have 1 garage which the R32GTR will be stored in. Not sure if there is any preventive oil wax / underseal I can put on the car along with a cover for the winter months, am looking in to this. It's been garaged all it's life and immaculate underneath so it is a shame but I cannot garage it and a 3rd car as a run around isn't really an option, as I only drive it once or twice a week it is still special each on each occasion and wouldn't want a cheap every day car.

Driving it regularly will help! My Indy (Zuffenhaus) reckon they don’t have huge issues on the underside due to the good factory under sealing. Saying that, brake lines corrode and I’m sure there are a few weak spots. Waxoyl or dinitrol underseal would be a good option I think.

I’m a sucker for the original turbo twists I’m afraid!

Yeah having left it for a few months it wasn't happy with it throwing a cat emissions error and the suspension feeling a lot stiffer. A reset of the error code and a good few drives though and everything is all good. I also heard the factory underseal is very good so they don't have too many issue, unlike the older models. Apparently leaving the fuel go below 1/4 tank can throw the emissions error also, first and only time it went under was when the error occured, no errors since. I had the offside brake pipe and hose done following the MOT advisory, nearside are all good still but one to keep an eye on. They do like to be driven, I make sure to always take it for a run when I take it out, getting it up to temperature, giving it a good blast and allowing it to cool down properly afterwards. Usually ends up in atleast £15 of fuel each day and that's just a very short run :D Luckily I don't do any short journeys where by it wouldn't be properly warmed up, driven properly and then cooled down before turning off the engine.

What model do you have btw and what Indy do you use? Any pics? I'm working my way through this thread, found some old posts from myself 10 years ago working on older Porsches with my Dad so have updated that thread too! https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/threads/rsr-replica.18242514/ I've got some photos of other restores he done over the years that I will have to post.

I’ve got a 2006 997 C2S cabriolet. I’ve used Zuffenhaus in Solihull since I bought the car 6 years ago and they’ve been great. Probably not that convenient for south wales though. My main issue is the lack of time driving the car. It is garaged which helps I guess, but sometimes I do wonder if I should have got something outrageous like a TVR or caterham given the rare sunny day use.

Very nice :) I use CMD Porsche in Bridgend, which is 10mins from me and they are fantastic, cannot rate them highly enough. Always good to hear of alternative Indy's though should I ever need one. A TVR would spend just as much time in a garage on a sunny day as during the winter from what I know of their reliability :p I alomost picked up a low mileage,orange 5.0 V8 F-Type a few weeks back and was considering selling the Porsche but the more I drive it, I don't think I could sell it anytime soon.
