Porsche Owners Thread - If you own one or just like or hate them! :)

To be fair to the guy, he had only owned it for 2 weeks and this was his 2nd track day in that time and was not hanging around! He and my mate in his 996 GT3 CSR were sharing a garage and having tuition from a racing instructor they both use regularly.

The 4.0 certainly felt rapid, about 10-15 mph quicker than the 996 at the end of Hawthorn Hill :)

The dealer I have placed my order with offered a demo of a Cayman GTS for the afternoon.

OMG! The noise! You really have to experience the noise first hand. I found it completely intoxicating, is the only way I can describe it. Its a sure fire way loose the licence.

The GTS I had for the day was in manual guise, the first thing I will say is the manual box is lovely. However, for me I personally found it a too longer throw changing gear and it was a bit clunky. Just to clarify that comment a little bit in and around town that's when I found it to be a little clunky. That said when you have a free run on some nice country lanes, the manual really shines.

Overall that's not changed my opinion and has also confirmed that the PDK is the correct choice for me. The PDK in full manual mode is just WOW!

I now have a long time to wait but boy is it worth it, this car as most of the reviews have said is simply put "Epic"

The market has gone mad, utterly crazy. Reminds me of the Irish 'Tiger' economy...

Buyer "How much for this land?"
Seller "1M euro"
Buyer "Sold!"

New Buyer "How much for this land"
New Seller "5M euro"
New Buyer "SOLD!"

New New Buyer "I'll give you 300 euro"
New New Seller "SOLD!"

The 911 did a great job, beating off cars such as F360, R35 GTR and RS5 with a clear victory:-

Best time during timing was 1:24.90 not bad as I was taking it easy (ceramics) and not revving much beyond 6500rpm, track conditions were exceptional. My previous best time when was on steel brakes so was pounding them was 1:23.60. :)

Later in the day when timing ceased a friend in an E46 M3 was lapping faster, but in fairness he was running full slicks which make quite a difference.

Having driven on all types of tyre now at Donnington you can expect:-

Decent Road tyre (Bridgestone, Michelin, Yokohama)
Semi Slick: 1-2s time reduction from road tyre
Full Slick: 2-4s time reduction from semi-slick

Full slicks transform grip levels, you would not believe it and its hard to make your brain compete that you really can turn in at such speed at get on full power so early and also brake so much later. Full slicks do however put a car under massive strain, so make sure the car is built to take it.

Going well now :)

Now, Oulton ;)

The 911 was never supposed to be go on this day, it was meant for the M3, but M3 still in garage feeling sorry for itself.

Done Oulton in the 911 a couple of times now, both wet and dry, its great around there.

It was why I took the 911 and was why I was taking it easy, still fastest car there and posted a very smooth and easy 1:24.90, but track conditions were perfect with plenty of rubber down and lots of grip available. Was quite funny actually how slow the 911 made other cars look, impressive considering how easy I was taking her. :)

Just a shame it was not the M3 as conditions were perfect for hunting down a 1:20 lap time with a Donnington all to myself more or less. Plus as I've designed the M3 for it, I push that a lot harder! :D

Looking into buying an 03/04/05 996.

Thinking the bog stock one - is this the Carrera?

What are they like for servicing costs? I saw every 2years/20000 miles which is fantastic! Not far off what my 1.4 focus does in mpg either - 35 extra urban v 40-45mpg in focus!!

Obviously tyres will be pricey but what about insurance and security etc because i don't have a garage - would be off road public parking.

Fixed cost servicing.

£265 minor

£395 major

£125 Check up

Every second year minor, every 4th year major, with an annual check up in between. I usually just get a minor service in between a) as I don't want 2 year old oil. b) get the use of a new Porsche of my choice for the day.

http://porscheownerservices.co.uk/servicing/?model=68

Insurance is pretty good, on road, good postcode £340 for me this year. 7year ncb, one accident 2 years ago.

Tyres aren't too bad, about 120 for a front 200 for a rear for PS2s.

Model Order is as follows:

Carrera (Cab/Coupe) or Targa

Carrera 4 (Cab/Coupe)

Carrera 4S (Cab/Coupe)

Turbo

By the sounds of it you're after a 3.6 Carrera which is 320bhp. Beware of the numerous engine issues, hartech or similar maintenance program is highly recommended, I would worry about an untouched engine at this age with the problems they have had.

Thanks ever so much for that! Very helpful! Yes it was the Carrera 3.6l with 320bhp i was looking at.

£240 for Focus, less than £500 for Porsche insurance. Fully comp too.

Noted about engine. Lot of high mileage cars, need to check for Porsche service history.

This seems the best place to put this, where's the best online resource for Cayman buying and info etc?

A couple of good forums would be the place to start the ones I use are boxa.net and 911uk.com both of these have sub forums with buying guides and cayman sections. :D

Less than £500 f/c on Carrera so double my focus insurance but not completely insane.

The costs seem reasonable but beware that if it goes wrong big money bills come rolling in. Service items don't come cheap and at this age rads and condensers are rotting away.

Engine work specifically anything to do with the heads/manifolds becomes mentally expensive as for some reason the bolts that porsche use rot away in the heads and snap.

If I was looking for a 996 I would be looking for a car that has the ims done with the LN or Hartech bearing or at least had its standard bearing checked to make sure that there is no play. I would make sure that it was the very best example I could find.

If you end up doing what I did and buy what essentially has become a project car and you rely on it then you could end up in a world of pain.
