Yeah the very high number of fec errors could suggest a line problem that is constant....

Your modem is reporting the corrected errors on the line.

It could suggest there is some sort of regular noise. Because of the overhead of correction which is being managed most probably by interleaving, your sync speed is slower.

Try plugging into the master socket with no extensions connected but leaving it there for a day or so then post stats...

Will do, but right now the fec errors seem to have stopped increasing so quickly.

FEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 94.224

This is with close to 6 hours uptime now. One thing that plugging into the test socket did do though was give a 17mbit ip profile

Edit: Speak of the devil, internet just dropped out. Was looking at the router stats aswell before it went off and the SN Margin fell really low

Hi i thought i would post my stats, back ground info BT infinity2 i'm about 700 and odd meters from the FTTC that serves me. Estimated download was 45.9 down and 8 up before i flashed the latest firmware on the modem i only received 30/31Mbps down and 6. something Mbps up.

I have installed the latest firmware blob for the HG612 and it seems to be achieving better results its gone up about 2Mbps so i'm getting 33. something Mbps and the sync for the modem has probably gone up by 5Mbps from 40000Kbps. I have ordered a new 2 meter DSL cable well 2 actually 1 is made out of CAT6 Ethernet cable 4 twisted pairs only 2 twisted pair used and it's separated from the other twisted pair, the other is a 2.1 meter CAT5e cable which has quad-shielding, 2 twisted pairs and 24k gold-plated contacts. So we will see if their is any change that that makes.

Then hopefully vectoring will help as the line ends in my road and their are are probably 50/100 houses or more served by that Cab, so think i'm getting a lot of crosstalk.

Can you guys tell me what you make of my connection please. Thanks in advance.

It doesn't appear to have made any significant difference. The connection is now slightly faster (downstream only, upstream has actually dropped), but the underlying figures haven't really changed. I can get more significant difference by just switching everything off for 10 minutes.

Also you can tailor the length of cable to make your install tidy.

You say you can get a better speed on your connection but i couldn't even if i switched the modem off and on again. BT say my max for my line is 45.9/8 max so i'm nearly max out on my upload it's the download that i'm looking to increase.

I think i might move the router from upstairs and make a need VDSL connection for the modem downstairs where the phone line comes into the house i think that would get rid of 5 to 10meters of cable on the VDSL side not sure if that would make a difference in the speed?

And then just run Ethernet CAT6 cable from the modem, upstairs to a unmanaged 5 port gig switcher to connect to my two routers what do you guys think?

Two routers?

Yes the modem was hacked to give me two Lan outs from the modem. I have two different networks for both wired/wireless and they are dual routers. But i think i could get away with running a CAT6 to the gig switch and then connect the two routers to the switcher

Hello,

Just keeping in the loop regarding the FTTC project that we are doing on our estate - sorry not posted for a bit but been busy / away and to be honest, just waiting for BT and Western Power now.... ZZzzzzz paperwork and beaurorcacy.....

Latest news is we have our cabinet in place and will be hopefully be able to order our first unbundled lines within a month. Our cabinet is being powered up mid June...

Some annoying news, - it appears that despite being one of the closest properties to our cabinet at 550-600m by road, our actual line length is 1150-1200m due to completely incompetent and illogical BT and Enterprise when they built the duct work for the estate!!!!

When we are able to report the stats, we will be showing you line lengths between 500m and 1300m...

will keep you all posted...

Just a pic of our new CAB.

Think we have made it a bit on the tight side as we are also providing the PSTN phone service onto VOIP cards in the cabinet (Full metallic path - no reliance on the BT exchange at all or their E Side) - we have a 1Gig Fibre coming in to the CAB...
This cab will be able to provice 96 VDSL2 17a/12a/8b/ADSL2+ services alongside 96 PSTN onto VOIP services on those lines....

Ok guys and girls i've moved the modem downstairs and rewired the phone and VDSL and placed the master socket where the cable comes into the house i've probably got rid of about 20/25meters of cable on the VDSL side of the modem. What i want to know is can i use a gigswitcher to split the WAN signal from the modem so i can send the signal to two routers? One of the routers is only a 10/100 router will plugging this into the switcher limit my speed across the whole switch or will it just run that port that the 10/100 router is plugged into at that speed and let the other one run at a gig? I have some improvement in speed by moving the modem from upstairs to downstairs.

FTTC cabinet arrived week commencing 13th May, and by the end of the week the hole had all been tarmaced over etc.
I emailed OpenReach the weekend afterwards to ask when I can order and they replied "currently this is awaiting power and other works, and the estimated date for cabinet enablement is close August 2013 assuming there are no issues."

Just saw on Roadworks.org
BT Roadworks said:
Works Start: 19 Jun
End: 21 Jun
Description : Install 4m of 1 way power duct in Footway,Performing an 1excavation to expose existing power cable in Footway

It's getting sooner... but why on earth didn't they connect it to power when they had the footpath all dug up already? Why did they fill it in and tarmac over, only to have to go and dig it up again?.

It's the councils fault and we all know they like to waste money.

Maybe the power company wasn't available at the time.

Rebooted my modem since rewiring and fitting the modem downstairs and i thought i could get at least 40mb out of my line but 42. something profile is even better than the 30/31mb i started out with before the firmware updated blob's, the DSL cable and moving the modem ;)

Hi everyone.

Really interesting stuff cjd78. I am glad I am able to follow this :)

My results are quite funny recently as my cab gets more subs and the neighbours catch on to FTTC (I was the second on my cab)

Somehow, I have managed to not only avoid interleaving but have managed to keep my speeds up despite certain stats threatening to stamp me down.

Any comments are welcome.

Well i have been tinkering and have managed to steal 1000kbps on the attainable side of the modem by replacing the cable in the house that runs to the master socket with CAT6a please bare in mind that the run from the point of entry into the house is only 2/3meters max.
I then doubled the connection of A&B so i used one pair for A & one pair for B which gave me 257kbps.

I know you will say those are small figures but for a line that was running at is max speed i think i have done well. Last thing to do is replace the cable running down the outside of my house with cat6 external cable and then i can do no more to the wiring. Just thought i might share. Here are my modem stats
