They are just good old IKEA Besta cabinets. Bought three and drilled holes in the carcass to bolt them together to give them more rigidity. Easier to move too. Also Swiss-cheesed the shelving to improve air flow as everything is operated behind closed doors. Left the back panels off to help too. They look quite smart with the gloss white doors.

Had to forget the IKEA BESTA, as it was just a bit too long.

Ended up with a Sonorous MD-9140 with Walnut wood

And yes, I will remove the sticker off the front of the Receiver soon!

I haven't quite finished the upgrade yet, but this is my system as it currently stands. I've bought everything over the last few weeks except the speakers and CD player.

AudioLab M-DAC
Marantz CD63
AudioLab 8000A
AudioLab 8000M x 2
Monitor Audio Silver 5i speakers (Bi-Amped)
Chord Interconnects
QED Silver Anniversary XT cable

I have ordered two tubs of Atacama Attabites for ballast, as both speakers are just on spikes at the moment and the ballast voids empty. Keen to learn how that will influence their sound.

For the future, I want to buy a proper rack next and trial some new speakers. My goal is to achieve maximum clarity and detail at low to moderate volume. Very keen to find a tablet or similar that will allow me to stream Tidal to my DAC (via USB).

Hi

I have an MDAC and 2x 8000MX. I used to have an 8000Q, the dedicated preamp, until I tried the digital pre section of the MDAC. Have you tried it? I suspect it is massively superior to the 8000A. I remember taking the lid off mine back in the day and seeing the ribbon cable connecting the sockets to the switching. Really lets the amp down.

Ditch it and use the MDAC as a digital pre and I think you'll be impressed...

I also have an MDAC, it may be of interest to some owners that John Westlake, who designed the MDAC is now making a new version called the FDAC, this will be hugely improved from the MDAC and supplied in a new case with internal high quality PSU, he is currently taking development costs and I believe there are still places left on this initial small run, after this there may be a full production version but the costs are likely to be higher. There is a thread on pinkfishmedia for anyone interested.

Hello there, thanks for the post.

I tried that. The problem was that the audio just gave me a headache and earache. I tried changing interconnects and cables at some expense and it made no difference. The issue remained regardless of source.

After some research indicating other owners experienced similar issues, I decided to sell the M-DAC and replace it with something else. I have no idea if it was a combination of the Audiolab components, or something particular to my own physiology.

I have just taken delivery of a Beresford Audio Caiman MKII. It is a truly wonderful DAC. The performance exceeds that of the M-DAC in my opinion. There is a greater clarity and separation to the presentation, the bass is more pronounced and controlled. No headache or earache so far.

I have also ordered, but not taken delivery of, a P50SA passive amplifier from Nene Valley Audio to replace the 8000A (I need an amp that will accept phono for future turntable use, so can't just use A DAC), together with their speaker cables, interconnects and a pair of their Cube 2 speakers.

I am keeping the 2 x 8000M for the immediate future.

Pure elegance!

Ever thought of a black gloss/matt unit? Giving the impression they all belong to each other.

My TV unit must be the most requested unit on OCuk :D
Its simple but elegant. Most people don't believe i paid £65 for it from ikea!

I went for white as all my AV gear is black and i wanted a contrast otherwise everything would be black and the details in the hardware would be lost :)

The only thing i need though is a meatier sub woofer. The Gemini sometimes doesnt cut it

I'm trying to order a BDI stand but the RGB site isn't let me process it on 6 months IFC. It takes me to the step where I pay 10% and it's wanting to charge the full amount. Shame as the one I want has a good deal of money off!

EDIT, ignore that, it's worked now.

Since when did the Besta range not come with shelves? I got my whole set up last year (2015) and each unit had shelves with it. Oh might have to get up a picture..

depends on which one you pick, they do configs with the shelves included
i picked mine with the shelves, but also added the legs to mine and support bar underneath but probably do not need it and went with the gloss grey front.

but i also picked a singular besta unit with a shelf and using the besta felt type boxes as a dvd/bluray storage and also holds my pc
sorry for poor lighting pictures, think this cost me £15 plus £5 for shelf...
but the besta boxes are £8 each :o
