Pro Cycling Discussion 2016

Think that one will take a while to sink in :p

It was a bit of a twilight zone moment that. He clearly passes over the finish line with his hands in the air celebrating winning the race, then all of a sudden he is surprised he won. It must have all got rather emotional for him, hardly surprising I guess.

Went to a tech conference for work today and there happened to be a presentation by Dimension Data and Tour De France organisers.

They talked a little about the on-bike camera usage, and the platform of transponders on each bike to provide data to organisers/media/teams etc. I had no idea there was a live tracker online for it last year.

There was, but it suffered technical issues IIRC, so was intermittent.

On bike cameras is a superb innovation and I'd love that to become more mainstream. There's some insane footage from the TdF last year; the perspective is so immersive and exciting.

Aha. Yeah the guy even mentioned they were a bit late with the live tracker project so didn't get much marketing done prior to the event.

I was tempted to ask about motorcycles when they asked for questions but kept shtum :D

The Dimension Data guy was already raging at the technical team in the room as the slides wouldn't move forward and the video wouldn't play!

Way to read five posts up :p

Also why would you start half way in? What's the point of watching a backstage pass for the race footage that you've probably already seen. It's the insight from the riders and the human side of racing which makes those videos for me.

Just watchec couple of those videos, how the race was won was very good. not seen any of this guys stuff before.

Cosmo is a fantastic commentator on cycling - he gets a bit grumpy with the UCI but race analysis is excellent. He used to have a huge amount on YouTube but couldn't get the footage rights / wasn't getting paid so now does a few videos for Cyclingtips although much less than before

I liked David Millar commentating during last years TdF. He provided a valuable extra degree of insight. I'd be happy for him to replace Phil & Paul permanently assuming they could find a decent sidekick for him.

Yep, I agree. Having an ex-pro (or even current pro) commentating is very good. But it needs a good partner to ask them the questions we all want to know.
I like Magnus Backsteadt too.

It was him and Ned Boulting i think for the Vuelta, best cycling coverage I've ever seen.

I'm still unsure on David he is a bit dull, but the insight provided is very good, bit like David Coulthard on F1, needs a bit more pizazz!

I used to think like that, then I listened to the drivel he was actually saying ;)

"The Heads of State are moving up now"

"If you look at that position he's in you'll see it's very aerodynamic, I used to do that myself and I can tell you that it's very fast"

"If you touch the brakes now, you'll go from 4th place to 104th place and be out of the race"
