Project Reality v1 finally here

The map rotation happens on server crash, I have a batch file that deals with that.. the problem is when the server crashes, it takes a popular map to get people back on until we get enough regulars to constantly seed it after each crash. So it gets lumped on fallujah or kokan to get it started in the hope that the server fills up and doesnt crash again

I'm happy to play any map really, doesn't bother me but theres no point playing on a server with just a few people on.. cache 22 there.

Have a CPC steam group up if thats what you mean? had it for a while actually!

You don't have floating names in real life though ;)

But telling people apart in real life is easier, so you need a compromise.
I just hate you can't tell who's who 2 feet infront of you most of the time unless you stare at them and hope the names pop up. Otherwise it's just "some guy", especially problematic when you're playing with multiple full squads all on comms and you just want to stick with friends.

No but it is the complete edition that is on sale hence why I linked it.

I know, I was just saying so some of the more inexperienced people don't make the same mistake I did when I first installed BF2 from the 'complete edition' disc.
Yup, I installed the whole lot hogging up a big part of my HD when I only needed the vBF2 files.

Just so we're not clogging up the Squad thread figured I'd revive this.

1.3 is now out and this is a standalone mod that no longer requires a BF2 install so you're just a download away from getting back into this!

Just had a quick play as a solo insurgent, managed to sneak up behind the Canadian forces attacking a cache, spotted a nice cluster of them around a vehicle and proceeded to load my grenade launcher. Overshot the grenade and ended up killing half a friendly squad, it's good to be back.

Having issues with sound right now, issue being is that I can't hear anything, local or squad chatter in the audio. I'll have a look at Mumble to make sure it's all working well.

Runs like utter *** and I can't stand being barked at by kids who think they are real life commanders. Everyone else seems to think they are something special with years and years worth of millitary experience.

It's a *** game

I know what you mean, some squads and leaders take it way too seriously but I just leave those and join another. I used to run my own squad most of the time anyway and just have a general rule of thumb of, "don't be a genitalia". Once I get used to the changes over last few years I'll start running those again.

In the meantime need to sort this sound out, looks like Mumble doesn't play ball. I'll check out PR forums to see if there's a solution.

I'm sorry but what have I just played??

I've been playing first person shooters since the first inception of counter strike, played all but the last 2 cod games, all but the last BF game and Arma 1 & 2 to name but a few so I've covered most genres of shooters, so I think I am well placed to spot a turkey when I see one....

this PR is just a clunky awful mess, even though it's only a mod it just feels wrong from the basics right through to the actual game play,

if Squad is anything like this then it will bum and bum hard. sorry to all those that enjoy this, but I really don't see how or what pleasure you are getting from it, maybe someone can enlighten me. and getting a good team going is not the answer, the game play movement and environment are totally rank so no amount of squad quality is gonna paper over that.

I know there's 'horses for courses' and all that, but I've almost always managed to glean some pleasure in some way from any fps I've ever played before, but this just baffles me. the fact it was free and I still feel cheated says a lot about the game (or maybe that says a lot about me)

honestly though, those that do enjoy it please (without it turning into a fanboy flame fest) tell me what am I doing wrong or missing?

Well you are playing a mod from a game that as of three weeks from now will be ten years since its release, things aren't ever going to be as fluid as a modern game.

What "basics" feel wrong? The lack of any visual indicators to tell you how much health you have? How many rounds are in your gun? I'd hardly call the movement and environment rank; quite the opposite. The level design is largely well done and the movement (considering the engine it is using) is by no means bad. In my opinion the enjoyment factor does come from getting a good team going.

Perhaps its just not the game/mod for you. A heck of a lot more people aren't going to like it compared to those that do, there's no denying it. But this is a game that in some instances is the benchmark for requiring team interaction and coordination. Beats the vast majority of the "gun-ho" generation of Battlefield 3 onwards and Call of Duty for me.

If you are of the BF3/BF4 generation then you are going to probably hate anything this old. I however am from the BF 1942/BF2/BF2142 generation and have tried the new generation of BF3/4 and absolutely hate it. Battlefield for me died when they dropped AI multiplayer games. Back then when the term "bot" was used to described the AI enemies and not the ones now who are used by people who cant be bothered to level up themselves.

Fond memories of AI Bots dancing in mid air or getting stuck in vehicles. Or a hoard of 64 AI bots charging at you and then running right past you. Creating maps and AI routes on otherwise player only maps etc etc. Ah them were the non-polished days the like of which we will never see again.....
