PS3 Impressions and Opinions Thread **Now includes pricing information**

I may be repeating what has been said before but:

Wow I'm so dissapointed. Ripping off the competitors, bundling the unproven Blu-Ray, stripping it down for a basic model which is still horribly overpriced, and more and more damn sequels.

While Blu-Ray has been one of those things Sony has been wanting to get off the ground for years, they could take some lessons from the PSP UMD.

If only they could go back in time and chuck out the Blu-Ray and this 'last minuite' rip off of the Wii and perhaps we would have the console at least out in Japan.

I do predict three things however:

- It will sell out
- It will be on sale on the Bay for over a grand
- It will be delayed in Europe, possibly up to a year (angry PSP fan speaking here)

Myself personally I am going to buy a Wii at launch and an XBox 360 when MS launch the killing blow of a price drop just before Christmas.

The psp was never planned to be a world wide release on one day - (or within a week) , this is only what I recall but Sony always thought Europe would be well behind japan on release of psp, so while I was one also who wanted a UK one immediately, cant really say the ps3 will go the same way.

you are correct, BUT they did keep delaying the Europe launch due to demand in Japan, then USA, and if they cannot keep up with demand when they have a delayed launch, they haven't got a hope in hell (i doubt) in releasing it here in NOvember as promised. It'll be March 2007 if they cannot hit the November deadline.

Remember anything they say now will have some effect on 360 sales so by saying it WILL be out November , just think of all those people who will hold of buying a 360 till November, if it works then Sony win, if not then thats the gamble the paid and they miss a xmas launch here in UK, which to Sony probably isyn't as important as say a Jap or USA pre Xmas launch

I don't really see how you can compare Blu-ray with UMD, its a completly different situation. As far as I know UMD movies only work on a PSP, so it was never going to work as a viable platform.
Blu-ray on the other hand is going to be everywhere, in your console, as a standalone box under your TV and in your PC. If the PS3 is launched successfully and does sell out then thats 4 million potential blu-ray customers set up and ready by Christmas. The only way I can see the format failing is if they price the movies considerably higher than DVD's are, but as long as their <£20 I personally wouldn't have a problem paying that.
Sure it's a "risky" move by Sony, but I think ultimatly it will pay off. It'll get Blu-ray players into the homes of people who probably wouldn't have bought one otherwise similar to DVD's and the orignal PS2. From personally experiance the PS2 was my first DVD player and infact I didn't even purchase a standalone dvd player until around late 2003/early 2004, but because the PS2 had the ability built in I was buying DVD's much earlier than I would otherwise, and I'm sure this is true for a considerable number of other people, so I don't see how this will be any different with Blu-ray.
Also if the PS3 last 6 years like the PS2 has so far I think developers will be thanking them for the extra storage space they have avaliable to them if games advanced similarily to how they did on the PS2... from 600mb games on a cd at launch to almost full dual layed DVD's by the end.
Just by two cents, but Blu-ray and UMD are two completly different kettles of fish.

How are they ripping off competitors? Of course Blu-Ray is unproven, it's a new technology, just like HD-DVD is. Nintendo and MS are just as guilty for sequels no?

I was going to list the number of sequels now reaching stupid levels (Ridge Racer 7 springs to mind) but it would take me more time than its worth.

Yes this is not unique to the industry, take Halo 3 or the fact that yes, of course, Ninty relies on staples such as Mario. However the PS3 line up looks so flat and unorignal, apart from the odd gem. Perhaps I have reached graphic apathy. Next gen for me is something new and different, not just graphics. The 360 has so many innovative features nailed (took me completly by surprise) AND quality graphics, the Wii, well I think you know the score with that. The PS3's only trump was its graphics and raw power. And the graphics don't seem any better than the 360.

Of course its going to sell like mad on release, and it sequel or no I will probably want to buy some of its games. I just feel that this E3 there was a massive Playstation backlash.

Sony: "LOOK WE HAEV FMVEEES!"
Crowd "..."
Sony: "AND T3H GRAPHIX!11"
Crowd "Quiet! I'm trying to fish in Zelda / slash someone with this Katana/remote control"
Sony: "WE NICKED THAT IDEA FOR OUR C0NSOLE 2!!!11 AREN'T WE KW00L!"
Crowd: "..."

I'm sorry I just don't trust sony. They REALLY don't seem to know what they are doing here. They are lying all the way and fobbing people off. Microsoft got questions, and they delivered. Such as the HDMI, Sony's response was pretty much "IT BE REET!". Microsoft had a fully upgradable solution which I am VERY grateful for.
As for the styling, having a console that looks like a smoothed out PS2, heavier than an XBOX 1, and having nasty uncomfortable controllers with no rumble... well it speaks for itself even before you take the price into consideration.
If I was Konami, I'd be pulling the MGS series from under Sony. Its an awesome series and worthy of a console that knows what it's doing.

Xbox 360 has already won this round in leaps and bounds for me. It is a superb piece of kit. Very pretty, FULL of features (wireless pads - SO comfortable).... It's all the little things like turning on/off the console with the pad and the play/charge kit, and Xbox Live and ARCADE.

Sony are a bunch of fools for dropping the ball. I don't see how even Joe Public can go for this one. They will just see a stupidly expensive PS2 won't they?

Unfortunatelly no. The majority of the UKs public will still be loving the low brow sequals that they think are adult games.
