PS4 and Xbox Rumours

Why is everyone so bothered about backwards compatability?

Given internet speeds and the rise of cloud gaming, you could just stream and play older games no?

But look at what the current consoles are managing on 9 year old hardware. Unified hardware means a lot and tbh most games are developed for the consoles then ported to the Pc.

I think the new consoles will bring more to Pc gamers than console gamers tbh.

Yes, some console games can look great from a distance, Halo 4 looks fantastic 7 foot from a TV. Up close however, and on a PC monitor they look every bit as though they're running on 9 year old hardware.

I agree through, having two semi powerful consoles running x86 architecture will be a hugh plus to PC gamers.

So if the games on these new consoles run at 1920x1080 on a 1080p TV, does it mean there will be less jaggies (aliasing)?
Running native always helps but in this case it will be much more the extra (smaller) pixels reducing the need for loads of FSAA. You could argue a decent scalar chip is worth its weight in gold too...

Microsoft’s next console will require an Internet connection in order to function, ruling out a second-hand game market for the platform. A new iteration of Xbox Live will be an integral part of Microsoft’s next console, while improved Kinect hardware will also ship alongside the unit.

Sources with first-hand experience of Microsoft’s next generation console have told us that although the next Xbox will be absolutely committed to online functionality, games will still be made available to purchase in physical form. Next Xbox games will be manufactured on 50GB-capacity Blu-ray discs, Microsoft having conceded defeat to Sony following its ill-fated backing of the HD-DVD format. It is believed that games purchased on disc will ship with activation codes, and will have no value beyond the initial user.

Our source has also confirmed that the next Xbox’s recently rumoured specs are entirely accurate. That means an AMD eight-core x64 1.6GHz CPU, a D3D11.x 800MHz graphics solution and 8GB of DDR3 RAM. As of now, the console’s hard drive capacity is said to be undecided, but Microsoft’s extended commitment to online delivery suggests that it will be the largest unit it has put inside a console to date.

Though the architectures of the next-gen Xbox and PlayStation both resemble that of PCs, several development sources have told us that Sony’s solution is preferable when it comes to leveraging power. Studios working with the next-gen Xbox are currently being forced to work with only approved development libraries, while Sony is encouraging coders to get closer to the metal of its box. Furthermore, the operating system overhead of Microsoft’s next console is more oppressive than Sony’s equivalent, giving the PlayStation-badged unit another advantage.

Unlike Nintendo, Microsoft is continuing to invest heavily in motion-control interfaces, and a new, more reliably responsive Kinect will also ship alongside the next Xbox. Sony’s next-generation console camera system is said to have a similar set of features, and is expected to be discussed at the company’s PlayStation event on February 20.

I hope the PS4 comes out this year and not next like rumours suggest for Europe release. As the more I read about both the more I fancy the PS4 over the next xbox. Prob will end up with both in time but would rather have the PS4 first.

I still don't buy into that online only stuff. It would limit Microsoft's audience considerably.

not sure how, as if your blowing £200-£300 on a console before you buy a game im sure you already have a internet connection.

the one thing that made me chuckle was

Studios working with the next-gen Xbox are currently being forced to work with only approved development libraries, while Sony is encouraging coders to get closer to the metal of its box. Furthermore, the operating system overhead of Microsoft’s next console is more oppressive than Sony’s equivalent, giving the PlayStation-badged unit another advantage.

especially after ms made various comments about the ps3 and its cell cpu being a issue for devs, sounds like ms have taken a step back to be honest.

It's not about having or not having an internet connection. It's about whether people want their console hooked up. Not everyone games online, just like not everyone games on an HDTV.

I hope this killing off the second hand market rumour is false. Surely it would just encourage developers to go down the sequel route ala COD and FIFA every year rather than take a risk on Bulletstorm, Vanquish or Enslaved Odyssey. If consumers cant sell on a title that they don't like surely they'l purchase less unknown games.
