PS4 and Xbox Rumours

The 12GB PS3 doesn't really use a 'proper' SSD, it's just cheap flash memory, the same stuff used in many tablets. An appropriately-sized SSD would make the console rather expensive initially, I suspect.

i thought pricing had came down to 50p per GB in retail pricing?

also if sony were buying SSD's in bulk, they would get it for far cheaper, buying them practically at cost i would imagine.

obviously they wouldn't use top of the range ssd's but they could use cheap ones. then again is an ssd much use in a console even a next gen one?

i do suspect their to be 2 models or 1 model with another appearing within 3 months. imo ssd is still too expensive, because the only real benefit is loading times, which aren't really a problem on consoles, developers seem to be adding a huge amount of crap into the start up of their games so even if you do have an ssd, fifa would still take 5 mins to get through all the intro crap.

If you have multiple version (some without SSD's, some with) then no. If all consoles are guaranteed to have a minimum of 500MB/s read rate from their drives (high tier SSD's) then that's a game changer regarding what they can do with that much fast storage.

do you really need such big read rates when you have 8GB of RAM?

because games will already be optimised to make full use of the RAM due to it being a console with a standard spec.

Plus the assets are going to be bigger than current games too. Nonetheless, I don't see an SSD being standard equipment on a console for a while, a larger HDD will be preferable to both the manufacturers and most consumers. The more storage you've got, the more chance of you buying more stuff to fill it.

some light reading for you all from the guys at guerrilla games on the killzone demo they showed.

http://www.guerrilla-games.com/presentations/Valient_Killzone_Shadow_Fall_Demo_Postmortem.pdf

some interesting points in there, especially the total memory usage, i know its only a demo so maybe under what a full level would use but less than 5 gigs used for the game isnt too shabby, so at a rought guess that leaves 2 gigs of memory to play with if you give the os and other things 1 gig. and of course this is still not fully optimized but on that id say the ps4 is looking nice. just have to see how far they can push it.

I very much doubt any console will have an SSD in it. Most likely they will launch with a 500GB HDD. If the rumour that you have to install games to the HDD is true then they will need a minimum if 500GB anyway.

I think the minimum HD size is going to be a terabyte at least. Hard drives arent that expensive, and there going to want to expand their download market.

they normally use laptop drives which are considerably more expensive. they could use pc drives but then the size of the console is greatly increased.

therefore 500GB sounds about right, or it may well be 320GB.

I think there will be a 500gb and 1Tb version, 500Gb about right for bang per Gb in the portable world and portable 1TBs are pretty common now...

ps3ud0

1TB would make more sense but I think 500GB more likely. Only 3 days until the reveal from MS. Not much hype around here but I for one am mega excited!

T-2 days now, people. I must say the adrenaline is creeping up a bit. I was rather apathetic to the new Xbox up til now.

TBH, even in the very unlikely event of the new Xbox being more powerful than the PS4, it's their market focus..casual gaming, shovelware kinnect enabled dross, that has made me lose all interest in Xbox as a brand...they're slowly but surely going down the Nintendo path.

It'll be PS4 and PC for me this time, Sony have set their stall out for the PS4 as gaming being the number one priority, everything else is secondary...the Xbox seems to treat gaming as an additional benefit to all the 'living room multi media hub' crap that the marketing suits want to shove down everyone's throat.

Yes let's write it off before we've even seen it. Excellent plan.

Read this this morning:

Microsoft has discussed its plans for next Tuesday's Xbox Reveal event, confirming that next week's announcement will be about "laying the foundation" and taking an "inside look at the making of the new [Xbox] platform and the team that's brought it to life," before revealing "tonnes of exclusives" at next month's E3.
"We're really going to tell one story across two events," explained Microsoft's IEB chief of staff Aaron Greenberg on the latest episode of Major Nelson's podcast. "So we're going to start on the 21st, and really that's about revealing the next Xbox platform; our vision for the future of games, the future of entertainment.
"We definitely have a lot of surprises planned," Greenberg continued. "I know everyone knows the Infinity Ward team is hard at work on world premiering Call of Duty: Ghosts, so we're going to see what that looks like for the first time.
"People are going to get a great inside look at the making of the new platform and the team that's brought it to life. To be honest, it's really about the team, the people here. That's why we're inviting people to campus; we're going to bring them behind the scenes a little bit. We've never done this before and so it's really exciting to be able to do that. It's a lot of laying the foundation, probably the best way to describe it. And then just a couple of weeks later we go to E3."
Microsoft will use E3 to reveal more about the titles headed to the next Xbox, Greenberg says.
"E3 is all about the games," he continues. "At E3, I mean, if you're a gamer, it's going to be tonnes of exclusives, world premieres, and obviously even beyond that we have a lot to share between then and this holiday."

Sounds good to me but we shall see.

Oh give up - Microsoft will walk all over Sony, likely with minimal effort.

What exactly did Sony even show us?

A controller that still has the sticks in the wrong place and remains a 2nd place to the xbox controller?

No console at all?

No solid AAA games - a wavey hand chronically awful music game? A few devs talking there usual "oh we can be so creative spiel"!

Quite predictably, all we've really had so far is Sony once again claiming their console is super-powerful. Which happens everytime and never amounts to anything.

They've played catchup on the controller (and still come short), they've played catchup on Kinect (and still come short - what with Kinect 2 round the corner).

Microsoft can easily roll out a new console, new kinect, plenty of solid, well known titles such as Forza, Splinter Cell, COD, Halo, Gears of War (i.e. Hardcore games) and much more interactive "move-like" games that benefit from the excellent functionality of Kinect. And with Windows / Phone 8, they can tie everything together nicely in a consistent looking interface. Something which Sony don't have either.

You do realise you're both as bad as each other, right? Denouncing either console before they've even been released to the public is rather silly.

Well, bearing in mind we've seen Sony's offering, it's very easy to appraise. If a company the size of Microsoft can't beat what Sony have announced, somethings gone seriously wrong.

IMO, Sony are the only people that have lost the plot - they're aiming at Indie games and sharing videos etc... how incredibly uninteresting.
