Queen Elizabeth II has passed away - keep posts civil and respectful

the motorway looks mad, can't be closed, there's still cars/trucks driving north but loads parked up in the 'fast lane', folk standing about everywhere, mad

I was on the Motorway heading south from a break to Scarborough on the day Princess Diana's hearse headed north to the Spencer estate. The whole motorway came to a standstill, both sides, and everyone got out to watch the hearse go by.

Just got back from my local proclamation. Not as spectacular as anything see in the capital but it was nice to hear the words in person. Although apparently we are actually in the year 20,022 according to the town mayor. :D

Britain had the largest empire to ever exist and its probably the most recent and relevant to complain about.

The Queen raised the issue over hundreds of miles of undersea land, the revenue goes to gov anyway but pretty significant for 'light touch' type actions.

It's a technicality but the Crown Estate isn't a part of the Monarchs private wealth. They can't for example sell bits of it off as they could with their private holdings. It's held and administrated by the Crown Estates Office, a private corporation, for the benefit of the Treasury with a yearly stipend paid the to Monarchy.
The same with the land holdings too. Can’t imagine people would be too happy if they tried to sell Canada for example

Maybe i'm just a prudish luddite for this sort of thing but seeing a sea of phones on the mile does grate somewhat.
A sign of the times, really. I'd say there was approx. 30% of the crowd using smartphones & tablets to record the cortege where I was, but everyone was quite sombre and respectful with muted clapping. It felt like a merging of old traditional values with modern cultural ways.

It doesn't even make sense to me, if you aren't there in person the TV coverage and professional images/videos will be better than any crap someone gets on their phone in the middle of a crowd.

Watched the hearse making its way to Holyrood on TV, something nice about seeing it on its way. Lots of people turned out to see it in person too, even if I'd agree all the phone-holding grates a bit. Nice to see the vast majority of people being respectful too, a bit of an antidote to some of the horrible social media comments which I've seen recently having made the mistake of reading comments under some posts.

Some of the soldiers' marching was pretty poor though! All out of time with each other coming out of the Palace. I guess maybe they're used to having more 'ef 'ight shouted, which won't have been happening as it's a sombre occasion I guess.

Completely agree. I'll stick with the memory of having been there and witnessing events through my own eyes.
