Quest 2, Which WiFi6 Router?

I'm getting 1200mb/s from my Honor Wifi 6 router that's the floor below my attic room. Funnily enough if stand next to and use my virgin superhub 3 which is in my attic next to my PC I get 400mb/s but virtual desktop claims I'll have degraded performance!

Still it doesn't seem to matter what I do, use Airlink or VD, reduce resolution or framerate, use H264 or HVEC, modded Skyrim VR always shows a lot of compression artefacts, while most other games look amazing.

So the only thing that's really making me keep my Index is that crisp uncompressed image in Skyrim VR, even if it is lower resolution. Pity, as I love the wireless aspect of the Quest 2.

Just went back and tried my link cable (proper Oculus optical version) which I've not used for a while, and set it at 500Mbps in the Oculus debug tool, and it gives an excellent VR image, with none of the blurriness I get with Airlink or Virtual Desktop. If I didn't already have an Index I'd be happy with that as a wired headset. It's just a pity that wireless doesn't seem to work well on 'busy' games with lots of detail.

My guess is that the next gen, maybe even Cambria, will improve that. And I have a suspicion, that a bit of it may be software side, and get improved for the quest.

I've got a Quest 2 and also a WiFi6 AX200 160MHz built into my X570 Tomahawk motherboard but it just didn't work very well, even with Virtual Desktop. Win10 seemed to throttle it (connecting my phone first sometimes helped unlocked the faster link speeds but not always) and the constant WiFi scanning didn't help, but even running a script to disable that I still didn't get a reliable connection with approx. 500Mbps link speed. But I couldn't go the cable as I'd get tangled up and I also felt that it was putting extra wear on the USB port on the headset.

I ended up getting an ASUS TUF-AX5400 which is connected directly to my computer's ethernet port with CAT6 and it's also connected to my LAN via the wall RJ45 with another CAT6 to get the internet side of things. Setup the 5GHz channel accordingly and boom, a constant 1200Mbps link speed and constant Network reading of 5ms. It even maintains full performance through a single skin brick wall. Love it!

I am just seeing this post now. You see, I didn't get a whole lot of compression artifacts when playing skyrim using Airlink or Virtual desktop. For most games I could only tell the difference between wireless and link cable if I went looking for them. In your situation I am suspecting the Honor router. Anyway you could get your hands on another router to try out?

Only suggesting this because I know other people who switched from an honor router to the Asus AX55 and claimed it was much better.

That's the problem with using a built in Wifi adapter or PCIe/USB network adapter. It might work but, more often than not, it won't. And even if it did work, in most cases, a dedicated router would still be better. Windows doesn't handle that kind of networking very well.

Yes, I imagine the Honor router isn't amazing. I've also got my Virgin Media superhub, and right next to that I get 866mbps, but still get smeary video compression in Skyrim VR. It might be worth getting an Asus router at some point.

Right, just bought the dual core huawei wifi 6. I'm going to claim we'll probably need it for the new house and it was on offer...

Just to make sure I'm getting this right. I need to plug it straight into my PC with a 1gps cable. Should it be set as a router, or just an access point in this config? Or does it not matter? I would guess access point?

Next, is there an easy way to set the q2 to prioritise connecting to the huawei access point when available, vs connecting to the normal wifi when not. Or am I going to have to manually switch it when I want to play pcvr?

Where is the current router? And will you be playing in different rooms depending on whether you are using PCVR or Standalone? Unless you are using the Quest in different locations in the house, there should be no need to switch between routers.

As for the setup, Just take the existing network cable out of the PC and put into a LAN port on the Huawei router. Then connect another network cable between it and your PC. Setup the Huawei as an access point.

Current router is in the house, I'm in the garden office, and will be in the garage when we move.

Will mostly be playing where the PC is, maybe a little in the house, but if in the house, it's likely to be standalone anyway.

If I set the huawei as an access point, will the login details still be the same as they are for the router inside?

Then no, you don't have to worry about switching between routers.

And no, the Huawei will have it's own username and password to login to it. And the Wifi on the Huawei will have it's own default password. Change the SSID on the 5Ghz band to be whatever you want and give it a password. Then only use that password on the Quest 2. That means the Quest 2 will be the only device connecting to the 5Ghz network. You can setup an SSID and password on the 2.4Ghz band for other devices.

@Unseul How did the Dual Core Huawei Router work out for VR streaming? There seems to be mixed things about that model online but it's so cheap it's awfully tempting.

Works just fine for me, maybe I'm missing something, but I get a good solid connection, little latency and no issues that I notice. It's in the same space that I play, and nothing else is on the network.

+1 for the Honor 3/Huawei routers. Strong signal and decent range, plus much cheapness. Regularly on a sale on the rainforest.
Like Unseul, I have it as a dedicated VR device.

im wondering if i should get a wifi 6 router

currently using the cheap plusnet "hub one" that came with it, although its been fine, im connected at 5Ghz, 833MHz speeds

ive looked at getting a wifi 6e to utilize the full potential of the 6 band

will the headsets take advantage of it or not ?
i use a pico 4 at the moment, but im thinking future proofing

also any of these any good ?

No, there will be no difference. You aren't bandwidth limited. And, since it's all working fine, you are unlikely to be in a high congestion area or have a load of other devices connecting at the same time.

Virtual desktop has a performance overlay. It will show you if your network connection is causing a problem.

Wifi is changing quickly at the moment, and I wouldn't buy anything now for future proofing. Wifi 6 is going to be a short lived.

Read my post in the other thread about Wifi

i do have a lot of devices on my network

parents stream films, use phones and tablets, and i do VR etc

Sorry Shi, Thats not what I mean by a lot of devices. I mean a lot of people using the wireless at the same time as you are using VR. 2 other people using wireless while you are playing VR is not likely to cause a problem (unless the router is really crap!!) And if the router isn't in the same room as where they are using their devices, chances are that they are using the 2.4Ghz network anyway.
