Questions - Diesel engine and transmission / gearbox reliability circa 2014-2019 -BMW - Mercedes - Audi ( on small hatchback or coupe models)

What about these then ? 2 series sport and the other m sport although It would be better with a 2.0,

Anyone know if the 1.8s are any good ?

218 & 220 are the same 2 litre lump. I assume they're pretty much identical bar the state of tune, but don't quote me on that :p

Had a quick Google and couldn't even find reference to this happening on the engine in a 120d, let alone it being a common and "certain" issue

Ok I probably over reacted. And may not be related to the 120d but Iv seen a few 320d have this issue including one of my old cars.

Is there an engine that if you service it frequently enough will reach the 160-200k and onwards ?

Searching in the seat Leon range your still looking at a 2016 ish model with 65k on the clock. For around £9.5-10.5k unless you want a 1.4 model

What is the difference here ? I can't see any decent looking 2.0 litre models ie 2020-2022 models for 10k with warrenty.

Not overly fussed on the hatchback side of it. I think some of the new new ones are alright. But some of the older ones I don't like the shape , If they done a coupe model I'd look

Your talking about the 218 (150) not the 220 (190bhp model)

Also, checked my milage over the past year or two. It could range from 8-9k on one year and another year 10-11k

Isn't the whole diesel Vs petrol discussions usually around cost saving if you do over 12k miles ? I guess then there is the soot and carbon buildup element of diesel

What sort of milage could you get out of say a well maintained petrol engine 220i Vs 220d

or an Leon 2.0 diesel and petrol ? Before they start getting issues ?

I worked it out earlier for your 120d Vs a 220i. At 8k miles your diesel saved you just under £300 year which is hardly huge in the scheme of things.

However an EGR or DPF fault could easily eat that and more.
Also since you're seemingly insistent on a manual as well (as opposed to one of the main reasons for getting a "luxury" German car - a decent auto box), factor in a near certain DMF replacement with a clutch change.

Let's say an avg of 10k miles over a year which could go up. So probably around 400 a year?

EGR and DPF. I don't really have any faults on my current 120d for these as far as I can tell, and as I said earlier.i do hybrid city and motorway driving .

Am I correct in thinking the model which has the exhaust coming directly out horizontal doesn't have a DPF fitted. Exhausts that curves down do have one? Or is it the other way round.

My 120d e82 has a straight exhaust, not seen any dpf issues driving around

Clutch change, so this is another thing , I always thought that auto boxes were no less or more reliable than manual, cost more to repair when it goes wrong and doesn't have as good performance as manaul counterpart (delayed shifting etc)

I need to get back in to the car searching,

I have built up a seperate fund for the car search over the last few months, outside of my normal savings in ISA and premium bonds so i dont have to touch those

So far in the "car savings" fund, i have about £12.5k saved, will be about £15k end of this month,

Although i don't want to use the full funds,

What is stopping me in the search is i still cant decide on what manufacturer and model i want to go for :(

No, not really. It's a really ancient platform by now, a diesel that has clearly done low mileage which most likely translates into lots of short trips given 6k per year.
For that budget you can really get more exciting, more modern, more reliable, depending on your preferences.

You got some examples?

Unfortunatly i still want to focus around the BMW, Audi ranges

Im still looking around in the BMW 2 Series, 3 series catalogues

Sure. 10-15k budget allows:
- A very good MQB car such a post 2014 Golf 7 (or a3 equivalent). This can be anything from a 1.5 tsi to 2.0 tdi including a reasonable condition Golf R for something exciting.
- a decent f20 1 series. Again any engine from 120i /120d up until a reasonable m140i at 15k (yes they have dropped that much)

You can at that budget go one size up with solid options available such as
F30 3 series (2012 onwards) . Something like a good 330d is available for sure in the budget. Prioritise good history and low owners over low mileage.
Audi A4 B9 - can also get a good 2017 onwards 3.0 tdi in that budget. Again a very balanced solid choice!

I have a 1 series at the moment, i dont mind them but i like the Coupe models, i dont really like the 1 series hatchbacks, they have restricted 1 series now to hatchbacks only. Hence why i was looking at the 2 series as they do these in coupe body types.

I have been told that A4's are quite "bland"

I was looking at A3 saloons, ill check out the F30 3 series

The 2 series is just the 1 series coupe with a new name.

The 2016 onwards Audi A4 is a more modern car than the 3 series so worth considering if nice ones are available for the budget. It's a generation ahead of the 3 series really and it shows.

Ref the engines, I personally wouldn't touch one of the older BM engines now, and by older, I mean then N series.
The newer B48 and B58 engines seem to get MUCH better feedback and can be found in BMs from around 2014 onwards.

Indeed, especially in terms of build quality where the F30 was really sub par. I remember moving from a f30 to an older A4 B8 it literally felt made of granit by comparison.

Also yes the A4 is a tad bland but it's a lot of comfortable, well built and modern car for the money - an ancient diesel TT is also very bland but a much lesser car.

Heck I think one of the best blends of practicality and excitement out there is the trusted Golf GTI! Also an option in your budget and imho a choice as good as the A4 - with less comfort, toys and build quality but a lot more fun on a B road if that is the priority.

I thought the B48 engines were 2015 onwards (so you would want to pick up a 2016 or later)? id have to check, if its 2014, iv seen a few of these but i thought 2014 still had the N47 engine which is what i currently have now.
