** R9 290X Watercooling Thread **

Assuming the rads are of decent quality/performance, I see no reason why 360/240 wouldn't handle a CPU and a 290 considering that plenty of people have been using the same rad configuration to cool OC'd CPU + Dual GPU's (6XX/79XX etc) for a while now with great results :)

Aye that's correct

3930k @ 5.0 xfire 7970's 1285/7200 - rarely broke 50c

Just look at those lovely coloured fans

Inteesting topic.
My single external 360 rad is keeping 5ghz sandy at 72c tops with 1.46v core + 7950@1240 below 55c. I bet that very long tubing loses some heat to.

Guess i will not ever bother with internal radiators....

After adding extra thick 120 in between cpu and gpu temperature went down 2c on gpu and that was it :P

Unless I read this incorrectly I cant believe so many people where horrified about Jbod having a 290x and a cpu under load with the hot 290x @ 48 degrees c where with the stock fan it would be 95 degrees!!

lol well said, I was thinking the same. There is always someone with a cooler/faster system.

I am not water cooling to break benching world records, I just want things to run cooler and quieter with decent clocks.

I just did a mega Crysis2 session all afternoon and GPU temps didn't go above 53c on the GPU.

You know, I had been planning on running 360+240 for my 2x 290 pro + i7 2600K setup. I assumed it would be fine but maybe not?

In addition to that I have to worry about modding my 800D and PCIE2 / CPU bottlenecks... ugh, the amount of money I've put into this rig and it might just need to be chucked out!

JBod +1
for me **** can fry as long as its stable. I did not had pc part longer than 18 months for few years now. Easier to sell when its still on warranty.

So ye ONE 360 external radiator is enough for cpu+gpu overclocked if you dont care if it sits on 65 max not 55 or 45.

What is wrong with people nowadays ??
Cause by looking at it no one should run anything on air cooling.

Last time i checked my 290x sits at 92-93 all the time while gaming
And if you have CPU on 4.4 or 4.5 on air and run prime you will see temperatures hitting 80 on cores.

Yet nothing blows up or fries....

Your tolerance to noise is also a huge factor.
A 360 rad with fans at high speeds, might have better performance than a larger rad at lower speeds.

I myself find that having invested into an external rad in form of the Mo-Ra3 360 Pro was one of the best choices for my needs and I can hands down recommend it to anyone. I have to say the initial costs are very high.
The rad alone with both covers and acrylic feet was close to 250€ and the 9 fans added another 130€ roundabout (I only have them on one side, both sides makes little sense), but this thing is a BEAST!

At the beginning when I still had my 2500K @ 4.5 with my 3 6950s it ran completely passive most of the time, even when gaming!
My new 3820 @ 4.5 produces more heat, but only to such an extent that under load everything is still inaudible at very low temps.
When I stress this monster with prime, my fans are at slightly above 700 and the CPU merely cracks 50° with a water temp of 27,6° in a heated room.
My setup is built for silence, at this extreme my fans are barely audible.
Unter normal gaming temps and thus also fans are much lower and it is inaudible.
It is very funny, because this makes other people a little uneasy sometimes :D

Due to quick releases this system is also reasonably portable and very easy to upgrade.

Now I stopped prime, the cpu temp is down to 23° and fans are idling at 250rpm .

Like I said I would highly recommend this to anyone as a rad like this is a one time investment and for most it would be more than sufficient to add 1-2 fans keeping initial cost down.
With a rad like this you could easily triple CF the 290x! And to top it off in desktop mode it offers a silent working environment as long as you get a good pump etc.

I found something that gives me VRM temps at last!

AIDA64 gives me at the highest point during a Firestrike bench a VRM1 temp of 63c and VRM2 temp of 43c.

Who needs full cover water blocks :p :D

Edit: Idle temps (right now) are 33c/34c.

Good stuff. What core temp/clock/fan speed?

GPU temp 50-52c, stock volts but at 1150Mhz GPU. 1250Mhz mem.

AIDA64 also gives a Watt power usage of the GPU and it topped out at about 180W - I plugged just my PC in a power socket meter today and it has recorded my Max total power draw during firestrike as 528W.

Fans are 3x Gentle Typhoons at 100% on a triple rad. Plus a 200mm Xigmatek case fan blowing onto the 290X.

Nvidia having massively lowered the price of the GTX770 (one of the pre-Oced versions I am looking at cost 330€ 2 days ago and is not at 280€), makes me rethink the r290x.

Instead of the r290x, i will probably get 2 sli GTX 770 at a slightly higher price (a total of 560€ for 2 770s vs. roudabout 550€ for the r290x with bf4)

From what I heard, SLI is quite solid nowadays with microstuttering a thing of the past, but would anyone recommend against this setup? Performance will be significantly better on the SLI 770s
I have a X79 MB so I could fully use 2x 16 lanes for each card.

I would have to call you: Alatar, Yungbenny or Malmental if you got those cards.

Why? Well because you're blatantly ignoring the price and BETTER PERFORMANCE AND SCALING of 7970/280x crossfire.

But yea, its good if you want pc swag.
