Racing Simulators

Thanks SKILL, that's exactly what I was after.

I may as well give up now! Looking at some of the stuff I'd need to be spending hundreds of pounds for content to race some of the stuff. Bloody ridiculous!

No one ever said it was cheap :p

I'm not really sure quite how bad it is now but when I joined it was semi-reasonable to move up to the next series (also helped that I stuck around at Skippy level for quite a while cause it's awesome)

I think if I was starting again I'd probably try to stick around the Skippy/Late Model/SK level (eg D-Class) the racing is good, frequent splits, all 3 cars are great to drive and the costs aren't massively ridiculous I believe.

Personally I don't find the higher level cars/races that much fun on a regular basis, good for a one off but they take a lot of preperation and can go horribly wrong very quickly which just ends up being frustrating...

Quick noob iRacing question...

I can see a major barrier to clean racing being not knowing what's beside you. For success in iRacing, is it generally considered essential to be using three screens or head tracking? Or do people get by with the old look left and look right buttons? Alternatively, do people on iRacing just tend to drive [perhaps unrealistically] conservatively to avoid incidents?

Cheers

Pre-Eyefinity (I don't miss those days :p) I used a combination of the virtual mirror with a ridiculous FOV (~160 degrees iirc) and the Spotter (which I still use) to let me know when I had a car alongside,

The Spotter is great and should definitely be enabled by all imo, although hearing 'car left' when the only car around is right in front of you in a braking zone is worrying to say the least (he's a bit conservative, there was a good 2-3 inches of space... :p)

I don't really think lack of triple screens stops you racing, and racing hard, with those two things enabled, if anything at first with triple screens I found that being able to see then caused me to give more room than was really necessary, until you get used to it and then it's just awesome.

I use 1 monitor, virtual mirror at the same FOV as my screen and the spotter usually, and of course the look buttons, but it's all just about situational awareness. At any one time I know where all the cars are in front and behind me, so if one of them dissapears I know where they've went. After that it's just trust that the other drive can hold a line around a corner. Thankfully, my 3k iRating generally gets me into the top splits where people can drive and have trust in each other. I've never had any problems with not knowing a driver is beside me and hitting them so far.

Add me to the list of racers, I'm 'Dezza Murray'. I had to use my nickname for my first name which is slightly annoying, but ah well.

Fair enough. I've actually really enjoyed the MX5 racing so far. I've had some really close racing and I look forward to more :)

The F1 and Indy car are absolutely fantastic to drive and you can always get good races, and the Nascar COT is brilliant aswell, also with a full field. If you like the Class D cars obviously you can stick around there, but the A/B class cars are just as fun, even more so for me.

No, unfortunately not, would be nice if you could download/test any car offline only...

I probably should've made it more clear those were my preferences, I like a car that moves around a lot, preferably oversteer so the Skippy is fantastic, and on the oval side I just don't get on well with the bigger ovals/NASCAR cars, the Silver Crown is really nice (around Phoenix has to be the best oval experience there is) but the americans only run that at around 1am friday morning our time, at least last I looked. Hence my preference for D class goodness :)

Checking out some of the driver stats (I'm looking at you unKn0wn) I have a long way to go. How many wins have you had already!!! I haven't even had a top 5 ffs :P

Ha ha ha ha.
I got placed in some lower splits with slower drivers due to having a low iRating. That's where they came from. Winning in the top split is much harder.

I found it easy to get quicker by racing with quicker people. Oh, Try out iSpeed. Its well worth it. Helped me out no end.

Just did my first race. Started 3rd, ended up 8th. I dropped a couple of places because my brakes locked up going into the Corkscrew on Laguna Seca and span 90 degrees to where I wanted to go. Then someone behind me tried under-taking me at a stupid moment/place leading up to the Corkscrew which let a few more people go past me, I don't think the person who caused me to spin intentionally meant to do so but you never know. People seem very apologetic on iRacing compared to the other racing games I've played which makes a change.

I need to sort out the settings though, when I'm changing down for a corner and I let the clutch out the rear end loses control quite easily, it doesn't seem to make a difference how quick or slow I let the clutch out. I just decided towards the end to brake in the same gear until 2000RPM and then change down a gear, that seemed to stop the rear end losing control going into corners a bit. I probably need to use the heel-toe technique to stop that completely. The brakes also seem to lock up at what I don't think is even 50% of the brake pedel being pressed.

Really dont get the SR and how the calculate it. Was in a skippy race at lunch time, came 6th and was pretty much incident free and got 50 SR points. Why would that be? Bumped me into the C class but I'm not ready for any of the cars in C class as I'm still pretty slow in the skip.

Ive rescued my g25 slightly, fiddled around with a thin screwdriver and pushed the copper wire in, so now the motor turns fully, its still notchy, but at least it works right.

SR is based on number of incidents per corner, but when you go over or drop belowa full number (for example, 3 to 4), you gain an extra 0.4 on top of whatever else you gained.

Blipping the throttle fixes the locking up of the rear wheels, and for the brakes try adjusting the 'Brake Curve' setting. Also, make sure you calibrate your pedals regularly.

What is a Skippy race?
Skip Barber.

I really need to learn heel - toe downshifting to get anywhere in road racing but I imagine it's going to be a complete nightmare to get the hang of :(

Yeah, heel-and-toe will get rid of the rears locking, or if you're untalented like me you could take the easy way out and enable auto-clutch for those cars that you need it on (personally I have just auto-clutch on, not auto blip as with that and left foot braking it's easy enough to blip myself)

I did try to get used to the clutch properly when they changed the transmission model to properly use it and I just can't, at least not at race pace :p

And yeah, Skippy = Skip Barber, awesome little thing :)

Also note that you don't need to race C class cars just because you're C class, I'm A-class (barely :p) and I only really race the Skippy :)
