Racing Simulators

Pesky indeed, i usually find those are the ones that speed through and usually crash 2 corners later after getting to the front lol. 38th in the Mx5 series standings, pretty pleased with that to be honest.

Yeah, I've seen that happen, but I tend to be very cautious, in my first race yesterday I didn't overtake anyone until towards the end of the second lap, the second race a bit more aggressive but mainly because the #1 and #3 rated guys were just ahead of me so I followed them through the field for a bit before overtaking them both :p

Just realised why my MPR isn't increasing. As I have a D license I thought that racing in any old series would increase my MPR, like my SR. This month I have mostly been racing in the Nvidia Cup.

However, because I have a D license I should be racing in the Skip Barber series instead. You do learn something new every day.

Mind you to complete the whole series I need to buy like $70 worth of tracks. Perhaps I'll just buy the ones I need to complete this season.

You can essentially skip licences if none of the cars appeal to you.
If you reach D4.0 you can race in the C class series.

I've been trying to reach D4.0 so I can race the trucks but everytime I get close someone takes me out and I lose SR. Starting to get frustrating! In the last race someone span in front of me so I gently braked to avoid him and the guy behind me made literally no effort to avoid an accident.

When you get close, it might be worth getting there by just doing qualifications or time trials. You only get a fraction of the SR per lap but won't lose any unless it's your own fault, not some other numpty :)

The track for the Skip changes to LRP on Tuesday. I'm just going to do 4 races in the week on LRP. Then wait another week, the season ends so Promotions should be done then. I think.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Almost, there's a few more weeks, the remaining skippy schedule goes:
LRP
Road America
Road Atlanta Full
Zandvoort National

I believe that makes 'Week 13' April 26th to May 2nd, which is when we'll get the new build, some new content (Okayama on the tracks is almost definite, and free I believe) at the end of that week they'll do the promotions as well.

Note that there are official races during that week, but only count for Rookie MPR and are generally a complete mess (large fields of all class drivers = messy for some reason), but there are also going to be several 'fun' series which don't count for iRating/SR but again they're messy :p

Lots of people either take it off or just do the fun races safe in the knowledge it'll rarely last beyond the first lap :p

I decided to buy the all the tracks for the skippy series yesterday, well it was pay-day and got 20% off too. Had my first skippy race last night at Watkins - Boot. Really like that track.

Anywho ran a few laps in praccy and managed a consistent 2:11. A few seconds off the pace but not to bad as I only just got the track. Didn't go to badly. But a guy in front of me span in turn 5 and I had to avoid and span into the barrier. Which after the tow put me ninth. Oh well.

Interested to hear about a new build and a possible free track too.

Yeah, Watkins Glen is fantastic, shame you bought it on the last day of the week :p

With the update there's nothing set in stone yet (that won't be till basically the days around the release where they may, or may not, release the release notes before it to show what's going to be in it) but the likely things are:
New Tyre Model - Dave Kaemmer has spent over a year now I think working on improving the tyre model and it looks 'quite likely' that it will be included in the next build, initially I think it's limited to certain cars (the main ones are the top-end NASCAR cars which currently suck)
Sound Improvements - last build they added some FMOD stuff, I expect to see some more FMOD related stuff to it, incremental stuff but nice anyway
Graphics Improvements - again the last few builds have slowly been adding/changing graphical stuff, not likely to be a huge difference but it'll be there

Probably some more damage repair stuff as well, possibly the ability to stall a car but I wouldn't hold my breath for that one.

Ultimately the tyre model is the big thing, and I think everyone's looking forward to it (but will still moan when it doesn't make them an alien :p) should make the cars handle/feel a lot better, which is desperately needed on the powerful oval stuff.

On the track, they announced Okayama a while back, then that it would be a free track added to the basic package (much like they added the Street Stock, SRF and Mazda MX-5 as 'free' content since I've been there), this should be complete by the next build, possibly sooner, and will almost definitely be incorporated into almost every road series for good measure :p

I just got my second win, yay!

Only 4 incidents which was one silly spin, and two minor off track moments. Feeling confident now and driving consistently. Just need to keep it up to gain back the SR I lost when I started playing :(

Good job SS, it wont take long, a couple of incident free or low incident races and it shoots up.

On a side note, the skippy isnt very friendly :( doesnt seem to like me, granted ive had it for 4 mins but my oh my its different, need a setup i think..hint hint Skill...

Stay on the throttle at all times! it has an open diff so over-rotates when you come off the pedal, apart from that its all practice ;)

Ahh that makes sense, but goes against my driving style, i like to roll into corners, hmm still its a twitchy little thing, ive hit the barriers like 20 times so far going miles slower into the corners than the Mx5 :( - so theres no real setup for the skippys?

Posted earlier in the thread but here's my setup:
Skippy Setup

I find it a nice balanced/controllable setup but there's a good chance it'll still be too oversteery for someone new to the car (and someone that unlike me doesn't actually like going sideways constantly :p) if you find that try increasing the front tyre pressures to 26-28psi, essentially the higher the front tyre pressures the more understeer, also increasing the brake bias might help.

I think I started off using ~27psi, slowly dropped that to using 23 or 24 now depending on track, same with brake bias I was at 57/58 now down to 54, lower and although I can go slightly quicker I make more mistakes which isn't great for racing.

As for driving the car, it's always gonna be a bit twitchy, rear mounted engine and open diff makes it really want to swap ends, so the main thing is to be as smooth as possible on all inputs, trailing the throttle does help massively so I'd reccomend left foot braking and always trailing a bit of throttle to just steady the car, at least initially.

On the plus side getting back on the power should be fairly easy, assuming you're not completely sideways when you try, as it generally wants to understeer at that point.

That setup helps, i had to put the anti roll bar to 1 though, i couldnt drive it at 8, can manage a 58.xxx on lime rock with it, but my driving style is letting me down big time with this car. I cant left foot brake to save my life, it makes my driving worse, so im learning how to control the car off the gas into corners, so far it works but damn you need to be quick or it bites you in the arse.
