That setup helps, i had to put the anti roll bar to 1 though, i couldnt drive it at 8, can manage a 58.xxx on lime rock with it, but my driving style is letting me down big time with this car. I cant left foot brake to save my life, it makes my driving worse, so im learning how to control the car off the gas into corners, so far it works but damn you need to be quick or it bites you in the arse.

According to the website my best ever was a 58.595, just did a 58.743 after a few laps, and that probably took me a while originally so you're doing better than me :p

I just won another :)

Really happy with my driving now. Just wish I had improved sooner so I could have made promotion, will have to wait 4 weeks now !

Congrats, it is nice once you get comfortable with a car and can lap consistently without making any major mistakes :)

Don't need to wait 4 weeks though, get your SR above 4.0 and you'll be promoted (assuming you've done the MPR bits...)

Welcome back, just checked and I already had ya :p

I'm only on 2.78 right now, but I was on 2.12 or there abouts this morning, so I've had a good day. 3 wins and a couple of 2nd places :)

Just got my first sub 1 minute lap on Lime Rock in the MX-5 too.

Done a bit of reading but can anyone give us a little update to the main changes in racing? I'm looking to finish off the remainder of the class D skippy series and in the old days you didnt have to worry about pitstops, fuel, gear changes, has anything changed?

I used to flat shift, no clutch, auto clutch and blip off, but I guess there is real engine/tranny damage now? I have a clutch pedal is that best to use? Auto blip off to?

What about race starts? I used to full throttle in neutral and then bang it into gear when the lights went out.

Thanks.

Hi SS, watched a couple of your laps round LRP last night during one of your races, was good entertainment. Good results btw :)

Oh dear, how was I doing? My last race of the night was terrible :(

What is auto blip?

No, you definitely want it on in that case. Well, I say definitely - if it were "real life" you would. No sure how iRacing has this stuff implemented.

You want to avoid clutch wear and jolt by matching the revs of the engine to the transmission, both when shifting up and down.

When I change gear I lift my foot of the accelerator completed, shift, and back on the throttle again. The auto blip seems to be what helps it match revs.

I just use auto clutch and paddle shifts, so it sounds like it would be better for me to have auto blip off. Is that right?

As jester says leave it on, iirc I tried turning it off (as I was thinking along the same lines) but found that changing down quickly caused a spin. Cant remember which car it was in though, probably the skip.

And the race I watched was from about lap 4 (was either 9 or 10pm) :
You were in the lead, had a minor off in turn 1 - 2. Two others caught and passed.
A third caught and bumped you round a bit from behind :) He eventually got passed. Several laps latter you had a minor spin - think you finished 6 overall.

Looked like standard MX racing. Your pace looked good when clear of traffic, think I saw a 59:XX at one point. I did try typing some text but I don't think spectators can communicate with racers. Which is probably best :p

Yeah that was my bad race. I was really annoyed as I'd raced really well all day, then it all went to pot. I think I got over confident.

As you say though I did get a 59.XX lap which I was very happy about :)

Exactly, on the upshift you lift your foot to lower the revs of the engine, so on the downshift you need the opposite to happen - revs to go up :) Typically this is done with heel/toe to "blip" the throttle. Auto blip does this for you and acts as a third foot :p

Think i might try the auto blip in the skippy, as im useless at heal/toe technique, to the point the car is totally unpredictable lol.

I really want to get the hang of heel / toe as not being able to do it puts me off road racing, mostly because I spend most of the time backwards in the wall having spun the car trying to downshift.

On a plus note I finally got my C licence for Oval so I can race the trucks! :D

Of that list only gear changes have changed, fuel I set to 3.8 in the skippy and that will do any race easily (3.1 can do some tracks but not all, imo there's no real time difference due to 0.7 gallons :p) and no pitstops in skippies at least.

I used to flat shift, no clutch, auto clutch and blip off, but I guess there is real engine/tranny damage now? I have a clutch pedal is that best to use? Auto blip off to?

This is where they've changed things with a new transmission model, but note there's no transmission damage yet, engine damage is limited to overreving on downshifts really (overheating can cause issues but not a problem in the skippy).

iirc there essentially 3/4 'types' of car in iRacing, based on gearbox:
1) H-Box with Synchromesh (Solstice, Mustang, MX5)
2/3) 'Dog' box/sequential box (oval cars are h-box but with dog gearboxes, I believe the skippy and some others are sequential boxes)
4) Sequential with engine cut (Radical, Star Mazda etc etc)

For 1 you need to use the clutch on both up and downshifts, it's possible to do manually with my G25 but I'm crap at it, so I 'cheat' and use auto clutch.

2/3 (I class these as the same really) you can upshift/downshift without the clutch but you need to do rev matching if you don't use it. As the skippy is one of these in that I have auto clutch and auto blip turned off, lift off to change up and blip to change down, downshifts are more likely to have mistakes though.

4 Essentially the same as the skippy except you can do flatshifts due to the throttle cut (like a quickshifter on a bike)

On the subject of auto blip, as mentioned I have this turned off at all times, I manually blip the throttle on downshifts, this only really works as I don't use the clutch for downshifts (or I'm using auto-clutch)

So to summarise, in the case of the skippy, apart from flatshifts and a bit of familiarising yourself with the new model it's basically the same as you were doing before.

What about race starts? I used to full throttle in neutral and then bang it into gear when the lights went out.

Thanks.

You need to use clutch basically, so I put my foot on the clutch, when the 'lights' appear (before they go red even) you can engage first, when they go red I floor the throttle, and then drop the clutch when they go green, simple :)

I can heel and toe my car in real life, can't for the life of me do it on the G25, same with the left foot braking, can do that fine on the G25 but unless I'm concentrating really really hard I end up practically nutting the steering wheel in real life :p

I feel sorry for you, really can't get on with the trucks, I think it's mostly just cause I'm really slow in them :p

To go up a class you have run in 4 events of the class your already in right? So could those events be time trials? I'm currently C 4.30 and want to go up to B but not ready for a star Mazda race.

Yes, TT's count for your MPR, to find out what you need to do highlight the MPR bit on the top left of the iracing site and it will say something like "You need 4 more races OR 4 more time trials", and obviously that updates as you do races/tt's to show what's needed...
