Done a bit of reading but can anyone give us a little update to the main changes in racing? I'm looking to finish off the remainder of the class D skippy series and in the old days you didnt have to worry about pitstops, fuel, gear changes, has anything changed?
Of that list only gear changes have changed, fuel I set to 3.8 in the skippy and that will do any race easily (3.1 can do some tracks but not all, imo there's no real time difference due to 0.7 gallons

) and no pitstops in skippies at least.
I used to flat shift, no clutch, auto clutch and blip off, but I guess there is real engine/tranny damage now? I have a clutch pedal is that best to use? Auto blip off to?
This is where they've changed things with a new transmission model, but note there's no transmission damage yet, engine damage is limited to overreving on downshifts really (overheating can cause issues but not a problem in the skippy).
iirc there essentially 3/4 'types' of car in iRacing, based on gearbox:
1) H-Box with Synchromesh (Solstice, Mustang, MX5)
2/3) 'Dog' box/sequential box (oval cars are h-box but with dog gearboxes, I believe the skippy and some others are sequential boxes)
4) Sequential with engine cut (Radical, Star Mazda etc etc)
For 1 you need to use the clutch on both up and downshifts, it's possible to do manually with my G25 but I'm crap at it, so I 'cheat' and use auto clutch.
2/3 (I class these as the same really) you can upshift/downshift without the clutch but you need to do rev matching if you don't use it. As the skippy is one of these in that I have auto clutch and auto blip turned off, lift off to change up and blip to change down, downshifts are more likely to have mistakes though.
4 Essentially the same as the skippy except you can do flatshifts due to the throttle cut (like a quickshifter on a bike)
On the subject of auto blip, as mentioned I have this turned off at all times, I manually blip the throttle on downshifts, this only really works as I don't use the clutch for downshifts (or I'm using auto-clutch)
So to summarise, in the case of the skippy, apart from flatshifts and a bit of familiarising yourself with the new model it's basically the same as you were doing before.
What about race starts? I used to full throttle in neutral and then bang it into gear when the lights went out.
Thanks.
You need to use clutch basically, so I put my foot on the clutch, when the 'lights' appear (before they go red even) you can engage first, when they go red I floor the throttle, and then drop the clutch when they go green, simple
