Racing Simulators

I was hoping to race yesterday but I lost my confidence after one spin which was causing me to lift more and I just couldn't do it at all after that. The first corner is really difficult since you have to hit the apex or you run into the grass and wreck but you can't see where it is.

No idea how I PM you on iRacing?

Join the nVidia MX5 cup and get onto server 777 for a few practice laps...?

Search the drivers name. Then when the search results appear hover your cursor over the helmet image. A box should appear with the option to PM.

This week it's time to take the DP to Indy. Unfortunately I did not get on with Homestead that well so hopefully this race will be better. Currently 8th in the world for this seasons practise times. Just need to get the same time or better in quali today...

Im loving this weeks track in the Skip. Its a proper racing track. Constantly on the edge to be quick. Blind Apex's, Fast turns. Only tested but cant wait to get on a actually race. Now I just have to scrape at least 5ths of my time.

Should have known to quit last night when during open practice for my skippy race I couldn't get a clean run without some knob jockey running me off the track.

Qualified and placed 3rd on the grid. Looked promising for a good result. We all managed to get through T1 but I got nudged and span on T2. Which added to the chaos as both guys span in front me during their own little tussle. Cars spinning everywhere! Lots of contact grrr.

Had to pit to repair, then managed a slow climb back to finally finish 5th. High attrition rate with many retirements. Not a dull race for sure.

Does iRacing do 'Pay As You Go'? I dont want to pay a membership for a couple of months to see if I like it, and not actually get round to playing it much because I am too busy.

It would be nice to add a load of credit to the account and then be able to play it when I have some spare time without wasting money.

Just had a read through the site (as I should have done in the first place):

iRacing is an online-only simulation service and an internet racing community. That said, our members will have virtually unlimited opportunities to drive, race, practice or test - any car on any track. We also offer an off-line commercial version for testing only (driving any car you want on any track). Contact Otto Szebeni for more information.

Good race we just had in the skip! Seemed to be a test of endurance around there. Wasn't that fast but I at least managed not to crash which most people seemed to do at least once.

How on earth did you manage a 1:34:400 CatMangler?! Quickest I managed was about a 1:36:500. Figured I wasn't going to be that quick anyway so I tried to be smooth and consistent.

Noticed that at mosport. Its my first time at the track, today at lunch time I decided to join a race and landed on a aussie server and had 350+ pings. Decided to let everyone through so was 12th on the first lap but by the end of the race I finished 4th lol.

And that was in the top split.

I think in a month or so when I'm settled I'll give iracing a bash. I've played every other sim out there, and I just got a G27, may as well use it!

Any tips concerning the best way to begin? Specifically, is it worth signing up for a certain period of time?

Just now there is the buy one month get 2 free deal around for new members, if you use paypal it won't auto renew which is handy as you can let your time expire and choose when to go back to it.

I think a lot depends on what, and how much, other sims you've played, but 3 months should be plenty to get you an into it (or not) and for $10 or thereabouts it's perfect,

Personally I played GPL on and off for about 5 years before iRacing and moving to iRacing was much easier as the feel is very similar, so if you've done a reasonable amount of driving on GPL you should find it quite easy to get up to speed with, especially the Skippy as it handles quite similarly to the old GPL cars but with way less power :p

Thanks Borrish, I have done a fair bit of practice in the last few days and this is reflected in my lap times. Still 2 secs off the really fast pace but its the best I can manage.

My first win last night. Led from lap 3 and my heart was pumping big time all the way to the flag. Well done on 2nd place btw.

Have you Youtubed a reference lap? Always use youtube.

EDIT: I can post a ref lap for each track, each week providing one is up on youtube if it helps people?

how does it compare to rfactor? The Mrs is away next weekend so I think I might have a weekend off of doing anything and sign up for the $10 for 3 months and play my ass off.

IMO much better to rFactor.

The tracks are Laser Scanned.
The SR and iRating system means there's more chance of the racing being clean. Not always a guarantee but it's better than open online racing games.
You can always find a race. Any time of day any day of the week and you'll be racing real people.
The FFB is better, much better.

I may of missed something. I'm sure someone else can fill the gaps in.

People are managing 1:32s? I thought I was getting there since I can manage to do a 1:36 consistently now. I think there's a few corners I can gain some time on with a bit more confidence. I'm just chuffed I've managed 40 laps of this track without going off at all.

Personally I prefer replays, although you can't always get them, but they give better detail and more ability to step through/go over sections to see exact speeds/turn in points etc, but youtube laps work as well just not quite as well imo

Personally I think it's better, compared to stock rfactor it's not even a competition, compared to the feel of a well setup rfactor (eg realfeel and a decent mod) it's a bit better. Conversely the cars, all the iRacing cars are well made, look good and handle 'well' in their own way, some mods for rfactor come close whilst others are nowhere near

Public racing is another area to compare (leagues are essentially the same between the two) and in that aspect iRacing is a massive amount better in my experience.

Overall I think you get a better experience overall and combined with far less tinkering/download/setting up than rfactor, imo...

Last time I looked the top qualifying time from this week was a 1:32.1, just did a practice and got down to a 1:33.5 which I'm reasonably happy with, would like a 33.0 and it might come as I practice a bit more tomorrow but it'll do.

And related to both that and my first quote, I've grabbed a couple of flying laps from that session. The first is my first flying lap of the session (not driven this combo in a good few months, probably last year thinking about it) where I managed a 34.4 basically, and it includes the best line into T5 :p the second is the 33.5 which is a bit messy tbh so 'obviously' a good chunk of time to be made with more practice.

34.4

33.5
