Ramadan 2020

There are a number of reasons why people shouldn't fast (e.g. periods, ill health, long distance travelling) so I assume they worry that people working in high exposure areas need their strength.

i was talking for a normal person (and not for people with exception). just querying the person who said it will be hard as the list you have given have valid exemption in normal cases even outside of pandemic.

Being deprived of food and water adversely affects many things, including endurance and decision-making ability. Things that medical workers particularly need during a pandemic. Which is more important? Obedience or people's lives? Most Islamic authorities allow exemptions for good reasons already and this is one of them.

see above response

But, do people who fast not just eat what ever they like in the evening?

yeah they do.. but they shouldnt.. i think last year iirc i was eating moderately healthy hopefully this year too

Would your immune system not be in a weaker state? Ok for the tough young but it will severely compromise the elderly.

e: should have read "young"

elderly who have problems dont need to fast, but its proven intermittent fasting is actually good.

Remember that your fast is broken if e.g. telling a lie. /QUOTE]

i dont think its true.. its certainly frowned upon

It’s ok to mock Christianity etc with the ‘skypixies’ line and the like. It’s not ok to mock Islam.

for those participating in Ramadan, much respect. I’m currently on meds which have scuttled my appetite and I get nauseous if I eat so I’m pretty much on an enforced fast and it’s not a pleasant feeling. Fasting by choice is not something I think I could do!

try criticisng israel (not the religion Judaism) and see the response you get on twitter... these days it is far easier to insult/criticise Islam than a country of Israel...

Ramadan Mubarak.

This probably isn't the place for it but when you break fasting can you post some pics of your food somewhere so the rest of us can feel incredibly jealous please?

This thread reminded me of one of my parents stories.

My parents lived in Tehran in the late 50's.

Looking at Iran today it is hard to comprehend just how different the country was 60 years ago. Tehran back then was just like any other city in the developed world. Hemlines were short and pretty girls wore makeup and danced to Rock and Roll! :p

Anyways, Ramadan.

Tehranis back then practiced a rather liberal interpretation of Islam. While they practiced Ramadan, they also liked a drop too.

A common practice was large gelatine capsules filled with Vodka. People would swallow these before dawn and over the course of the day the gelatine would dissolve and deliver a shot.

I don't imagine anybody does this any more.

First day fasting. And so far so good. Looking forward to the annual weight lost i go through every year :)

No doubt it'll be tough for the first few days, but after that it'll be a breeze..

Hahaha :p I can try, my wife and mother-in-law have made an awesome packed lunch.

I have slept most of the day as I am on nights but damn I feel drained but it's fine after the first two days.

Fantastic. I was once given some home-made biryani by a Muslim colleague and it was out of this world. It was so good that I had several helpings (a bit greedy in hindsight but they were very accommodating and didn't seem to mind). I could quite happily fast for two days straight if I had food like that to look forward to.

This picture probably doesn't do much justice....

  • Some chicken, rice and vegetable dish from the canteen
  • A stew my mother-in-law made
  • Some sweet dish (the calamari looking one) she also made
  • Granola (yogurt and fruit in the fridge) for a snack
  • Dates to have at the start
  • Caffeine and fizz

That sweet dish looks interesting, what is it? If you're struggling to finish that stew then I'm sure I could find a good home for it. :)

Thanks for the picture. It looks super-tasty, enjoy.

Thanks. The sweet thing is called jalebi/zlebia or zlabia, don't think I have tried it before. Haha don't worry, come 3am I am sure my appetite will resurface.
