Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

1.727.0.0
Patch Notes

  • Resolved visual issues with characters occurring on certain GPUs, including AMD Vega based models.
  • Improved the visual quality of vegetation in ray-traced shadows and ray-traced reflections.
  • Implemented a fix to make the Texture Filtering option work as intended.

Have had the chance to see if RT is improved? Unfortunately for me, the kids require entertainment
RT reflections have not changed, still bugged/missing on water. The hotfitx only seems to address shadows.

In fact reflections on water even with RT off are bugged having just checked to see what it's like screen space :/

PC game will always have some bugs, just too many hardware/driver config. Cannot test them all.
Console games also have bugs, patches are a part of gaming life. IMHO its because modern games are so big and complex, and publishers are quick to release to cash in. Nintendo games are better than most, but even they have patches/updates.

Here we go:

TL;DW, recommended settings for the best quality are:

RT Shadows off because it's bugged, even on highest setting some shadows are actually missing, whereas non-RT shadows is fine.

Thing is, publishers now seem happy to have a bare minimum of testers, and will depend upon buyers to beta test their programs, and patch later.

Hell, even Microsoft got rid of most of their testers.

And everyone kind of accepts it, we may not be happy about it, but we accept it.

Quite impressed everything cranked up to absolute max and at 4k dlss quality with frame gen the visible frame rate is hitting 120fps.

Game IMO is the best looking game on PC, it looks better than cyberpunk 2077 and runs probably over twice the frame rate.

Definitely one of the smoothes experience as well, almost console level of "just works"

They are two completely different art styles and cannot be compared visually really, also one has full path tracing and is supremely more demanding as a result. The other doesn't even use any realtime global illumination so would naturally be less demanding.

A patch was just released to fix the shadows so these reccomended settings are now outdated

I'm referring to with or without path tracing the performance is much better in ratchet and clank, despite their different art styles the level of detail appears to be much better in ratchet.

That's not my findings tbh, with the same res between both games, Cyberpunk with full RTGI and all other settings maxed or set to Psycho where available, Cyberpunk will max out my screen's 144Hz/fps cap with with frame gen disabled, so only DLSS enabled. Ratchet will not go to that level consistently as it bounces due to the CPU optimisations and GPU un-utilisation throughout. It also does not look as good on a technical level vs Cyberpunk, but that's to be expected when one game has actual realtime GI, whilst the other has baked GI and no day/night cycle.

I will say ratchet is definitely cleaner though, it's just got that Pixar level of polish and smoothness to it.

Anyway, the solution to fix the water reflections is to set AO to SSAO, completely bizarre that AO affects reflections on water, but here we are...

SSAO:

RTAO (or any other AO setting for that matter):

Not seen this on Steam yet? Only the one patch released so far which the DF review notes as well.

Early hours bit of testing here :p

Ok so the crashes still happen it seems, ranom but wider spaced now. Mostly they seem to happen now randomly if quitting the game, one earlier happened when I clicked E to buy something from the shop merchant... So looks like disabling FG/Reflex doesn't actually stop the crashes.

Nevertheless I am saving manually as much as possible so any crash I get jump back in, and since the game loads basically instant anyway, just a bit of faff until they patch this out.

I did run some RTSS performance stats. Anyone else doing this make sure you do not enter the map/inventory etc because as the menu screen loads, the 1% and 0.1% stats become skewed as it will register the split second frame drop as the menu loads. So when running the stats, just play the game without entering any menus, then stop the test so the stats are saved.

I got:
  • 31343 frames rendered in 310.938s
  • Average framerate : 100.8 FPS
  • Minimum framerate : 77.7 FPS
  • Maximum framerate : 138.2 FPS
  • 1% low framerate : 66.7 FPS
  • 0.1% low framerate : 49.9 FPS
With the following settings:

Completed the main story last night, just some side stuff to do now, think the game reports about about 77% completed in total so far. Never played this game on any PlayStation so this was my first time playing this franchise and I loved it.

It's still been 100% rock solid even with the latest small patch and it's still preforming great, still no crashes or strange stutterring issues yet for me :)

I just built a 2nd system for playing this type of game and i literally sold the RTX 2070 in it when the game came out. So I installed my backup GTX 1660 OC while I was waiting for a replacement RX 7600.

Very impressed as it's payable on high at 1080p without any upscaling and looks great. Now I'm thinking it's worth switching to the main system with all the "bells n whistles" turned on, when patched! OLED might be a bit trippy.

Visually I think R&C is much better IMO.

Also it's hard to get over 60fps in CB2077 at 4k even with all the tricks (DLSS/FG) turned on with a 4080 and this is in reference to RT @ Ultra.
When you add in the newer enhancements to CB2077 which make hardly any difference visually (unless you're not playing the game but playing spot the difference), then the frame rate is entirely unenjoyable and easily can be in the 30s.

Granted path tracing isn't needed to really engross in Cyberpunk, RT Ultra with those 2 Psycho toggles is really all that's needed and it's much easier on the GPU too. I don't know how a 4080 plays it but I'd have expected at least with full settings (barring path tracing) using just DLSS it was over 100fps, and then when you use Frame Gen with Path Tracing, it's at least up to 100fps.

Unless you are using DLAA or somethig that adds even more GPU load which a 4080 might not fully be capable of?

Either way yep, there's a cinematic look and feel to Ratchet that not many (if any) recent games can match, even with the bugs currently outstanding!
