Listened to 'Stories and Comets'

I've gotta be honest, to me it sounds a little bit generic. A mixture between From Autumn to Ashes for the screaming, and The Juliana Theory for the vocal part, although sometimes the vocal sounds very Davey Havoc esque (AFI is the band if you want to check what i'm on about).

I'm not saying that it's bad, and if it was released now due to the scene, it would probably do well, but it just sounds like another emo band to me. OK, emo with splashes of hardcore to be more precise, but just like every other mediocre band in the genre they all follow the same pattern in the songs, with a very similar vocal. There's nothing there to distinguish them from any of the other middle-of-the-road bands. Listen to some 'The Blood Brothers' or 'GlassJaw' for how the vocal can be made unique to make the tracks sound different.
Also, no real technical skill (well, any evidence of it) when playing the guitar on any of the tracks which I was able to listen to, though the bass player seems to have some skill. Not saying the skill isn't there, but on the teaser tracks it's not apparent.
All in all, I probably wont buy the album, but if it came on the radio I wouldn't turn it off.

The album was out over a year ago... Time to write you out...
Juliana theory? Don't really agree there I don't think...
They have split up now... He's in 'Dartz!' which are just a pretty fun band...
Glassjaw aren't that unique... Blood brothers are good :)
To be honest, when stories and comets were out... I don't think they were 'scene' in the slightest...

Glassjaw may not be that unique, but they are amazing, and Daryl Palumbo is one of my favourite vocalists. His Head Automatica stuff is great too.

Trivium of course!
Wow! I bought Ascendancy today after checking out a few reviews and downloading "Like Light To The Flies" last night (impressive song) from their website and I haven't stopped listening to it. This album is amazing. "The Decieved" is my favourite right now but only just. Incredible talent considering how old they are. I love the mix of screaming/growling and melodic vocals as well as the heavy riffs. I'm not sure how valid the comparison between Trivium and Metallica is as I haven't heard much of the latter but I love Killswitch Engage and Trivium are very similar in style.

Cheers A5H

I think just about every half decent metal band has been mentioned so far, but I don't recall seeing Sepultura, or Isis (possibly my new favourite band knocking RATM off the top spot after 10 years).

o carzy - i thought you had good taste? - newest avenged sevenfold album is there worse (but thats coz im used to them, most will say second of the 3)

imo

waking the fallen
sounding the seventh trumpet
city of evil

other people

waking the fallen
city of evil
sounding the seventh trumpet

fold are my favriot band, i listen to bands like trivium, killswitch, and the like - and the only band who come close to fold are inme (alough i fear they went the wrong direction with thre new album)

seriously - the screaming can do your had in at times (bust a blood vessle in his throat for city of evil so couldnt) but musically its just magic, seriously - listen to, oh, lets say, and all things will end, i wont see you tonight part 1 (epic) and desecrate through reverance, truely brilliant

my 2p

Watch it....! :p

I'm not a major fan of their first albums, I saw them live at Reading, and they were dire. (Was before City Of Evil was released) City of Evil is such a ****-rock album, it's fantastic :D

Killing Joke
Misery loves Company
Darkane
Farmer Boys
Mnemic
Soilwork
In Flames
Cathedral
Deathstars
Immortal

Within Temptation
Nightwish
Xandria
Persephone
Tristania
Symphony X
Draconian
My Dying Bride

Will Haven
Norma Jean
Oceansize - Effloresce (you like a perfect circle, so that can go in there)

dont really listen to a lot of metal, but you should listen to Isis, and Pelican if you can get your filthy little hands on it.

go on...off you go

36 Crazyfists are always on my playlist.
Roadrunner all stars album is decent.
Bloodsimple (off to see them in March, Trivium supporting - In Stoke :D)
Trapt, decent mellow rock.
Disturbed
Avenged Sevenfold
Ollele

Allll good.

Theres no doubt Trivium are VERY good.... their great live aswell.

BUT...

Their songs are so predictable, you just know that every song has some shouting then some singing, and you can exactly when. I dont find that impressive tbh.

If you like Trivium, you might wanna try "As I Lay Dying" waaaaaaaaaaay better imo :)

....no gay singing to be found though if you like that stuff ;)

52 posts and no-one has mentioned Pitchshifter. Shame on you all.
They're not really metal, and they're not really any good either. The first album was ok, and I saw them live at Reading sometime in the late 90's and they were pretty good, but they went severely downhill after that.
