And done. Not only has my nostalgia been satisfied but the game actually exceeded my expectations. This is a remake done right. They trimmed all the fluff without trimming half of the game, fleshed out the characters and improved their interactions, certain story bits have much more sense now, the level design leaves the original in the dust and the overall feel of the game graduated from a B movie romp to something more serious and closer to a survival horror. It successfully weaves in and out of action sequences and tenser more horror-like moments and it does all that while displaying a tonal constistency that's the complete opposite of something as all over the place as RE Village.

The new Ashley is great, so different from the old 16-year-old looking brat and her interaction with Leon is much better. Leon has been improved as well and so have all the characters, Luis etc. Definitely a step in the right direction, even though RE isn't exactly known for deep plots and multilayered characters. Both Krauzer's characterisation and the fight itself were good enough that I thought I was playing a Metal Gear game for a while, perhaps fighting some long-lost member of the Cobra Unit from Snake Eater:p Well, maybe not to that level but still:p

I had planned to play something else after this, but here I am listening to the save room theme and itching for another playthrough. Maybe straight into handgun/knife only HC? Or standard NG+?

For something that has so much content on a fresh playthrough, the replayability seems insane.

Easy 9/10 from me and a glimmer of hope that even RE5 could potentially be saved if they remake it with such care and attention.

Well said man. Well said.

Now. Give is an updated list of you Resi games. Would be good to see where this one fits :)

Nor sure where it'd go overall and I'd rather do it in isolation from classic RE so I can say it beats 2&3 Remake (2 is a lot closer but as a remake this just has to take it), original RE4 (and that's saying a lot since my good memories with it cloud my judgment of it a bit), 7 and Village. And obviously 5 and 6:P

Already started a new playthrough, left a NG+ save on standard and went straight into fresh HC S+ handgun/knife only so its going to be fun:D
Chapter 2 currently, we'll see if it's doable as I have to grab enough treasures to upgrade the Red9 or the Blacktail when I get them but pay attention to the 5h 30min time limit.
Running from enemies is fun and I get to sell everything that isn't a handgun, hg ammo or herbs/sprays:P

Somewhere in Ch4 at 1h 6min, I've been doing as many requests/treasures as possible along the way so hoarded enough money to upgrade dmg on the Red9 to max currently available as soon as I got it, along with some other stats.

Not gonna lie, it's tough and it's gonna be tight time-wise, assuming I can even reach the end with only handgun/knife and no bonus items:P

It’s a fantastically polished re-make. I never realised how action packed Resi 4 would be. It’s like a prelude to resi village. Has the same vibe and hordes of enemies to kill. Explored the game fully first play through so it took me a good 15 hours. Might go back to it in a few months time for the S tier challenge.

I hope with Resident Evil 9 we move away from bland Ethan and his family and go back to Leon, Chris, Jill or Claire.

I started playing RE4 Remake again. On Chapter 4 or 5 now playing it on profesional. So far it has been very easy apart from the fight with what was it called Del Lago?

While playing some of the lighting I found very impressive and was thinking, oh boy, imagine if they wait and make a Resident Evil Remake or reboot using PS6 which should have much better RT. Imagine how that will look? Got happy thinking about it

Little game time but reached Ch5 and fighting the savage mutt now at around 1h 32min, completed all requests so far, I'll be skipping later ones and most castle/island stuff to hopefully make it in 5h 30mins.

Handgun/knife only on Hardcore transforms the experience, I assume this might be harder than Pro when with all weapons even on a fresh run.

It's basically kill what has to be killed and run whenever possible using stuff like swerving to the right direction to avoid left/right swings, I didn't even have to think about it when using other weapons. 80% running, 20% fighting:D

Without the shotty and absolutely OP flash grenades you're quick work for enemies and while it's possible to kill everything if your aim is on point, it's simply not optimal and too time consuming on an S+ run. Absolutely dreading some of the parts that are coming, especially with Ashley tagging along:D

The game's really addictive though.

Finally reached the castle yesterday at 2h 05mins but I must've retried the house defense like 10 times, absolutely brutal:P

The chainsaw sisters almost broke my spirit, TBH. If someone's planning to do handgun/knife on HC then around 60 bullets from a fully upgraded Red9 with stock (to the max available at that point) aren't enough to kill both sisters and the villagers comfortably so if you're speedruning at the same time, the kiting that you have to do is a big waste of time:P

Mendez went down on the second try in comparison.

If I get through this, the revenge will be sweet. My infinite rocket launcher is waiting, everyone gets a damn rocket to the face free of charge, no merchant deals needed:D

I'll post an update with time umm, IF I reach the island:P

Soooo I’ve been playing. Currently in the castle, playing on hardcore mode.

My goodness, what a game. The controls are wonderful and the wonderful blend of horror, goofiness and snack hunting that I love

The downside is that I do wonder whether playing on hardcore mode right off the bat was a good idea…

What I find is that there are a few instances where I have died where there was absolutely nothing that I could do about it… other than learning attack patterns and/or enemy placement. It has given the game a sort of Dark Souls feel at time… I’m reminded of a moment in Dark Souls where I was walking over a bridge and a dragon just toasted me, insta-death.

^That sort of gameplay frustrates me and gets in the way of ‘being fun’. I like being given the opportunity to learn - be dynamic and succeed. If I’m just learning an attack pattern, then it’s not really me being skilful… it’s just a memory game.

I say all that but the only moments that has really been the case is simultaneously fighting the big dog and the hammer man in the village (when I only had the pistol and the shotgun… buying the rifle sorted that out!)… plus the fight in the slaughterhouse, where he’d just lunge at me and kill me fuuuuuu :p

The cabin fight was pretty darn gnarly but I powered through!

Good times

Oh and the PC is holding up too!!

Thought I’d have a quick sense check of what people are experiencing FPS wise and playing around with on graphics.

I’m playing through an OLED at 4k and have found that turning on FSR1 on its Ultra Quality setting is definitely worth it. The game jumps from 60-70 fps to 90-100 fps which is a noticeable difference and it’s pretty much indistinguishable otherwise. The improvement in the frame rate is more noticeable than the graphics hit.

The only real benefit to the increased frames, if I’m honest, is less blur in the middle / far distance. You could argue that it’s more cinematic with the lower FPS. I’ve found the 90-100fps range to be the FPS sweet spot, as more than this doesn’t really add anything.

What a stunning game! A few times I have thought, wow, it really doesn’t get any better looking than this.

Dude, what are you doing using FSR? Get the DLSS mod installed already. It is copy paste 3 files I think. It is so much better than FSR.

I am playing at 5160x2160 using DLSS Quality and locked frames to 60 and it is super smooth and looks awesome.

Finally, I never bother playing games on hard for first playthrough. Always on normal. I want to enjoy the game, not tortu myself :p

I am playing Professional on my 2nd go now, on Chapter 8. Only need to fully upgrade my Magnum now and then all my guns will be fully upgraded. Will get a Rocket launcher after that :D

Finished. What a game. Kept me wanting to know what was around the next corner the entire time. A certain laboratory was a tough part for me but managed to get through it in the end :D

9.5/10.

Hmm I have been off the modding slightly after reading that someone who posted a ‘how to mod RE4 guide’ on YouTube then commented that his download links included malware and that people should check their systems :s

Is there any go to download mod site you would recommend…?

It was on nexus and they probably scan for such things I would imagine. Definitely don’t download random links though. I would be more worried if there were loads of files, but each mod as I recall is like a single file. Thought I could be wrong.

As I recall this is the one.

Download Fluffy mod manager (from Nexus) and just drag whatever mods you’ve also downloaded from nexus to it.
REFramework is also a must.

Thanks both :)

I’m a little confused… do I just need the REFramework tool? Or other downloads as well? Various YouTube videos suggest that multiple downloads are required, including:

REFramework;
Upscalerbaseplugin;
DLSS DLL;
Nvidia inspector.

Are those other three needed as well? If so, it seems odd to me that I can’t get those last two direct from nvidia… just… whyyy.

As soon as I have conflicting info, I just hide under a blanket.

Inspector is optional. I did not bother with that. The DLSS file is from techpowerup.com anyway. The other two from nexus page I linked you. Job done.
