Rift £200 off

I find the performance from Steam stuff a little lacking sometimes, could really do without SteamVR itself (which offers an environment like Oculus Home) - with Oculus Home, SteamVR and then a game or experience running I find I need to reboot every now and then (or at the very least stop all the programs and restart the services, Oculus Tray Tool is useful for that) to get performance back to acceptable levels.

Functionally though it works okay. I've only got about half a dozen VR titles on Steam, but they all work on my Rift.

Thanks for the replies. This is what i wanted to avoid, I hate having loads of apps open. I bought all Corsair stuff so i could just use the one app to control everything (but then got a logitech wheel and Kraken with more software!)
I might hang on and see what happens when LG announce their device. The Oculus has been tempting me at £399. If it was actually in stock somewhere, impulse would have probably got the better of me!

First off, LG would want to recoup the investment in research, so it's unlikely they'd be able to sell for as low as 399 (or even 499). But more importantly, they won't be able to solve the software problem. They'd need either compatibility with either or both of the big two, or create their own ecosystem (making the problem even worse). Also, are they developing something like Touch or the Knuckles at the same time?

My thinking was the Vive would come down in price and I would only have steamVR as the extra app.

However, I've spent the afternoon reading people's experiences and bought an Oculus. Impulse got the better of me after all of a couple of hours!
The driving games have sold it for me and a golf game I saw on a post on here somewhere. (I'm not even that into golf, but it looks amazing!)

Edit: I cancelled my order, my usb 3 ports on the back of my machine have VIA controllers which don't work apparently. Too much faffing with PCI-e USB cards and i'll probably need a HDMI extension along with usb extensions (which may or may not work) And it looks like delivery would be weeks away. The Vive lighthouse system looks far better and I won't have cables trailing everywhere from my PC. Impulse averted for now!

Mine arrived earlier today, was the pack with the xbox controller :). Not tried it yet though, been too busy pulling my hair out playing the Dying Light ending while it was bugged but didnt realise it was 'cus i hadn't played it before  stupid game.

I cancelled my order for the Rift with Occulus last week and I have never tried Virtual Reality in my life. So this week I purchased the Samsung Gear VR2 at a very good price and have used it with my Samsung S6 Edge phone and boy am I impressed, watched a woman going mental in a 360 video and there were dance sequences as well, I felt as though I was taking part it was so real. Tried a couple of other things like photos and again impressed also a wee bit of netflix. We are off on holiday soon and wont be back until early Sept and one of the first things is to purchase a Occulus Rift even at £499 and they should be back in stock then. Cannot wait.

IF you were impressed with the Samsung Gear then I can't wait to see your reaction to the Rift. It's going to knock your socks off.

Cross post - mine arrived last night. I only had an hour or so, I set it up with one of the two sensors and quickly ran through setup. Didn't configure the play space properly, so I couldn't really walk around that much, but... WOW!

I've watched a lot of VR videos on YouTube, and watched some streamers who play a lot of VR on Twitch, but experiencing it yourself is something else (for me at least).

I went through the demos, even the first room - the one where it's all white and there's nothing really in it, it was so weird in VR! With a little bit of suspension of disbelieve, you feel like you're really there. The high-rise demo, the little alien guy, the robot in the trailer thing - awesome!

I downloaded Lucky's Tale and had a quick blast, it's so weird to be able to look around things. Like putting your head around/through something, and to be able to see it the other side. I knew this was possible of course, but to actually do it is really fun. The Touch Controllers are great, really intuitive.

Some negatives of course, as with everything. For the focus to be the best for me, I get reasonably sized black bars noticeable on the left and right of my view. I can liken it to looking through a scuba mask. The 'screen-door effect' is also quite noticeable when you look for it - however when I stopped looking for it and just enjoyed the content I barely noticed anymore. One thing which I wasn't especially prepared for to the extent it bothers me, is - this thing is HOT to wear! It felt like if you don't let the lenses warm up, they can fog up pretty easily. It's also quite hot to wear, not the device itself being hot but rather pressed against your face hot. My nose sits surprisingly high into the unit itself, so if you're a nose breather like I guess I am, it doesn't help with the air temperature in the Rift itself.

Like I said though I really blasted through the setup, only had one sensor, and just wanted to see VR in the hour or so I had last night. I'm sure if I configured everything properly, and calibrated my space then it would be even better. My first impressions are great so far.
